The CATS which students sat in their fifth year required breadth of knowledge across all main subjects, plus any electives. The RATS, taken in seventh year, were about depth of knowledge in the areas that interested the student most, or that they felt would be of most use to them. The fact, therefore, that they had fewer exams did not by any means make for a lighter work load. Those students who had opted to take their exams at the usual time had the advantage of being allowed notes, though these would still need to be well-organised, well learnt and well understood in order to be of use.
For better or for worse, the students would remember the examiners, as they were the same ones who had overseen their CATS exams, minus Roland Ashburn who only tested the younger year group. Those who had had a run in with Nanette Langdon were most likely to be having unpleasant flashbacks, although anyone who received an 'Outstanding' from her could be sure it was what they truly deserved (and anyone who didn't could console themselves that perhaps it wasn't). Aurora Septentrion was friendlier, if not effusive or prone to smiling, though a few male students had fallen victim to overshooting their capabilities in order to try to impress the petite blonde. David Weatherby had a solid reputation for fairness and a polite manner. This had been known to set some of the female students a-flutter, but he and Aurora were solid bets so long as one didn't give in to hormones.
The exam hall was usually a little empty for RATS, as fewer students took each subject. This year, with students being able to take their exams at the end of summer instead, due to the disruptions they'd faced to their teaching, people were very thin on the ground. Where there were no overlapping students in either group, theory exams were running side by side. In the afternoons, practicals for the relevant subjects were taking place, though these were timetabled for one after the other, as – after some consideration – combining the firing about of hexes with the possibility of magical creatures getting loose had been deemed unwise.
