Angelique had spent the first eleven years of her life dreaming of going to Sonora, of the day she'd make lots of wonderful friends and be the most popular girl in school and even meet the man of her dreams. And, honestly, in a way that had come true. The Crotalus did have friends, she was very popular in society and she had met the man of her dreams. The problem was, it just wasn't at school.
And she was lonely . Supremely, desperately, lonely. The only people she had to really talk to were her cousins. True, Arianna Tate was a very distant cousin, but still a cousin. However, the sixth year was the only girl near her age that was as much of girly-girl as Angelique was, even though she could be kind of mean and catty sometimes.
Anyway, the Crotalus was a very social person and sometimes, her cousins just weren't enough. Besides, it made her look clannish. Though to have someone judge Angelique as being such was really unfair. It was not her fault that her classmates were the way they were. It was not her fault that the other girls in her class had all grouped together and left her and Tasha out.
Of course, the person Angelique had seen as The Problem, was not here anymore but that was beside the point. Things hadn't changed and she was still mostly alone. An outsider and that was the worst thing in the world. Sure, she was beloved among society, with Devin and her friends Anastasia and Ariel. She was even going to be one of Vera McLachlan's bridesmaids. Of course, the girl had like twelve bridesmaids, but still she was honored.
And jealous. Quite jealous. Angelique didn't think she had twelve people she could ask if she wanted because her school situation was so crummy. She'd probably have to resort to asking Isla and Amethyst who were four and five respectively if she wanted that. And Topaz . Topaz was so not bridesmaid material! As it was, she was going to ask the two little ones to be flower girls.
She was jealous of Emerald too. Emerald who was quite introverted, had two roommates she got on well with and two other friends, two male friends. The universe was such an unfair place. The fifth year, who valued her alone time, had all these friends and Angelique, who craved social interaction, had squat! Things weren't supposed to be like this!
Anyway, the seventh year had had to get creative about finding people to talk to and as a result, had started talking to the portraits in MARS. Unlike with her classmates, Angelique always managed to get just the right person to talk to when she went in the music room for a chat.
Today she was going to the music room-it was always the music room-to talk to one of her favorite portraits, Miss Clarisse Robichaux. Angelique had started out using the portraits for their intended purpose but had one day been feeling extra sad and lonely. She could write to her friends that didn't go to school here but it wasn't the same as an actual in person conversation. That day, instead of a singing teacher, Angelique had gotten Clarisse, who was what she really wanted, someone very much like herself. They had been friends ever since.
Soon, however, the Crotalus would be leaving Sonora and she couldn't help but be incredibly happy about that, to be out in a world that would accept her instead of this little microcosm that was not at all how things were supposed to be. At least not for her and it was supposed to be that way for her. Angelique was not supposed to be the one that was different.
Not that she was saying anyone had to be the one who was different. In fact, if the entire class had been just like her, she would have been quite happy!
And it wasn't as if everyone had to be like her exactly, but jocks were just too different. People did have to have some common ground in order to be friends and if someone's main interest in life was sports, then they would have little to talk about with Angelique. Or worse, someone like that might want to actually play sports and there was just no way she was playing any sort of sport.
Anyway, Angelique did consider Clarisse a friend even though she was a portrait and not a flesh and blood human being so of course, the Crotalus wanted to spend time with her before leaving Sonora behind and never looking back.
She entered the music room to see Clarisse's portrait there, all blonde ringlets and elegant clothing. "Hello." Angelique greeted her friend.
"Hello." Clarisse replied. "How you today? Any news from that lovely betrothed of yours?"
"Oh, yes!" Angelique replied. "I just got a letter from him. He's just starting his new job. Unfortunately, he's finding it slightly dreary. Fortunately, he's such a considerate person that he spared me the dreariness." Devin made it his mission to never bore her and to only talk to her about interesting things such as music. This was not simply to keep Angelique enjoying his company but to make up for the lack of desirable conversation she'd had at Sonora. "I know he really doesn't want to take over the family business, and that he'd rather be a concert pianist but he has this obligation as the oldest son. I really feel bad for him, Clarisse. I wish his family was more like mine where even though men feel socially obligated to work, they at least get to do things they like. I mean, my cousin is going to be a writer and even our family heir got to be a wandmaker."
Clarisse began to respond but the door opened then and someone stepped into the music room.
