Headmistress Kijewski-Jareau

August 01, 2013 10:18 PM
As promised, the Booth Registration sign up went up a week or so after the Returning Feast had concluded. Along with the registration, there was a worksheet that the students were to fill out and place inside the box. This worksheet would describe exactly what they were looking for when it came to the design of the booth and any materials that they would require for the booth to be successful. Any information the booth designers had in mind would be of great value to those who were going to make their booths become a reality. The more information provided, the better for the builders.

The registration also went over some of the guidelines of the booths as provided by the Headmistress during the returning feast. This was important information that the students needed to be aware of if they wanted to make their booths and the fair successful.

First, they needed to remember that there were several different categories of booths for them to choose from, but their booth needed to be assigned a category, so they were only allowed to choose one. The categories were: Food Booths, Game Booths, Informational Booths, Group Fundraising Booths, Arts and Crafts Booths, and Entertainment Booths. If the students were unsure of the category their booth idea would be listed under, they were advised to seek out a staff member for help.

The second reminder was that all materials for the booths, including food supplies, would be provided by the school. It was a school sponsored event after all; it would seem callous to not have the school provide the funding for the booths and the items that were intended to be in the booths.

The third reminder was that all booths were to remain free of charge except for the Group Fundraising Booths unless given permission by the Headmistress. Tip jars were allowed, but it would not be tolerated if a student forces their customers to leave tips. If a booth is caught charging a fee to their peers without permission, they will be asked to leave the fair and serve detention for the remainder of the event.

The final reminder was that people needed to keep their capabilities of running booths in check. A person should not sign up to run all the booths at the fair as it would prevent them from actually enjoying it and it was not possible for them to do everything all the time.

OOC: Sign up your name, the name of your booth, and the type of booth it will be. Anyone who wants to participate in that booth can then sign up underneath your registration.

Waverly Canterbury

August 02, 2013 1:30 AM
Name: Waverly Canterbury
Booth: Baking Club
Type: Group Fundraising Booth

It all seemed so real now as Waverly registered her booth. She was hoping for all the Baking Club members to join, but she wouldn't be devastated if they had other commitments. Just as long as there were enough people. Waverly felt bad for charging people for their baked goods, but it was necessary to raise money for next year. Otherwise they would be really tight and Waverly didn't want to charge her members for joining her club. Anyway, she was still planning on having free baked goods before the CATS and RATS so people could take advantage of free goodies then. Hopefully no one would be turned off by the prices.

She still wanted a creative name for their booth, but she couldn't really think too big when it was a fundraising booth. That way it could be clear to everyone what they were raising money for.

Waverly was excited for the booth. She filled out the worksheet, describing the design she had in mind. What she wanted was a painted cupcake-shaped front with pink "frosting" and a beige bottom. There would be a hole in the middle of the cupcake-shaped front just like any other booth so people could purchase their cupcakes and cookies and whatever else the club could make. Maybe even fake sprinkles could be added with the leftover wood chips. Waverly smiled, hoping for the best, and placed the worksheet into the box when she was done. She would have to work the club members hard till the end so they would know how to make a diverse amount of sweets and be able to bake them perfectly in no time at all.

Jade Owen

August 03, 2013 9:50 AM
Traditionally, Jade wasn't a joiner. She was on the Quidditch team for personal glory, hence the draw of the position of Seeker. She was in the baking club because she got free food. She could run her own club okay because she was allowed to set the rules, but volunteering to run a stall at a school fair was not something she would ever have expected herself to do. Yet, here she was, filling in her registration and collecting a worksheet.

Jade had decided that the best way to raise funds for her club's trip would be to use a game. She hadn't decided on what game exactly yet, but it would probably have an equine theme. Punters would have to pay a nominal charge to play, and would be rewarded with a prize. She supposed she would have to work out the final details before returning the worksheet, but for now she could at least register the booth. Taking a quill, Jade scrawled her details legibly:

Jade Owen, HLC booth, fundraising by games.

She glanced over the skeletal details, and hoped that would be sufficient for the time being. She would need at least one other member of the club to help her. Jade thought Abi, Aria and Wendy would probably be her most likely candidates, or maybe Arabella because they shared a dormitory, but she would be very grateful of anyone who offered to help.

Chloe Jareau

August 05, 2013 6:37 PM
Chloe had decided that she wanted to do a booth for the fair. Really wanted to do one. Not just help out at one, but start one herself. Normally, Chloe was okay with just going along with whatever. Sometimes, she took lead on things, but not necessarily projects. Well, not big projects like this. She liked to be in charge of baking the Christmas cookies and telling everyone how to decorate them or of making the ornaments or of putting up the decorations, but never something that was a school run event where everyone can participate.

But this time, she thought she could do it. She was already prepared to beg her siblings to do it with her and she even said it was sort of like following in their mom’s footsteps. At first, none of them really seemed to understand it, but that was more her fault than anything. She had only told them that she wanted to do a booth, but not what it was on. It was only after she had created the poster of what she wanted and how to do that that Emery seemed to understand what she wanted. Chloe was determined to enlist the help of Ayita and Angel too. Ayita, she was sure would help her without question as her older sister never seemed to mind anything Chloe did, but it would be harder for her to narrow down Angel, but that was because he was in a completely different house than anyone and in a completely different lesson group. But she would do it! It’s going to be a family booth.

With this in mind, Chloe had gone off to her mother to ask for permission and help with her booth. Her mother said they would do what they could in order to make it work. Chloe knew that if anyone else had wanted to do this booth too, her mother would have made it happen, so it wasn’t playing favorites, but her mother seemed pleased that this was what her children had decided to do. Without even thinking of asking because that seemed pointless, there was no doubt that they would want to do this with her, Chloe signed up her and her siblings for her booth.

Her mother would work with Professor Meade to obtain both Magical and Non-Magical creatures that were more on the harmless spectrum of animals to help them. Their booth wouldn’t be much of a booth, but rather, sectioned off areas of creatures that people could enter to pet and feed them. This was one of Chloe’s favorite attractions to festivals, it was only right to have one at the school Fair.

OOC: Forgive Chloe for being presumptuous and believing her siblings would like to play along with her. If they don't, she'll be mad, but will eventually forgive them.

Keme RunningBear

August 05, 2013 7:13 PM
Keme was rarely someone who participating in things. Even back home. He definitely did things, like scouting, tracking, fishing, hunting, etc. But those were things that everyone did. He wasn’t doing anything special by doing them. That was the difference he supposed. By doing those things at home, he was doing what was expected of him. His tribe still tended to do traditional pastimes with their children. Boys learned to hunt and track. Girls learned to weave and make pottery.

The one thing that Keme seemed to be expressly good at was Archery. He wasn’t sure why that was. His father said he had a way of honing in on the target. His patience helped him steady his arm and find the right angle where most others just wanted to shoot the arrow and therefore, lost the shot. Obviously, he was only as good as his class level for archery, but he was often one of the top winner in the local competitions that they held for their tribe. Keme loved to use his bow and arrow. He had first helped one when he was eight. It was a long process for him and his grandfather (who taught him) to learn, but they were both patient and eventually, Keme had been able to hold the bow proper and shoot the arrow without catching it.

Archery was one of the few talents that he had and although he had declined to make a club out of it at this point, he hoped to maybe one day bring it completely to Sonora. For now, he thought it might be a good idea to make a booth game of it. He didn’t know if anyone else actually enjoyed archery the way he did, but people seemed to like games, so it was a start.

Under normal circumstances, Keme would not be one to put up a booth. In fact, he knew he never would have if he hadn’t thought this one might get some people interested. As a game, the arrows would not be actual spears, but suction cups. The point was to hit the bull’s-eye and make it stick. A person gets a prize if they manage to stick to the target, the closer to the bull’s-eye, the bigger the prize. Everyone was given three arrows. It was pretty simple, but he thought people could have fun with it.

He signed his name on the register, Keme RunningBear, Archery Booth, Gaming Booth. and then filled out the worksheet for the booth design. He kept to the simplest theme with a standard booth, but he didn’t think the look of it mattered so much. But, he supposed he’d just have to wait and see.

Adam Spencer

August 09, 2013 1:22 PM
The registration for booths had gone up and Adam had passed them by for a week. He had been thinking and shaping the idea of his booth in his head without a real thought of what it would look like. The booth itself would have to be like a giant, emerald green box with an opening where Adam would be inside and where passerbys could see the inside. There would be a large, enchanted frog inside a cauldron that would hop up and open its mouth for someone to throw something in before the frog closed its mouth and disappeared into the cauldron once more. It was a lovely idea, but to carry it out was another feat altogether.

Finally Adam mustered up the courage to go register without his mates around to provide the hands. It wouldn't take very many people to run the booth, but he did want to go out and see the fair for himself. He had never been to a proper fair before, really, and he wanted to see what other booths his peers had in store.

Adam Spencer
Froggy Coin Toss
Game Booth

The supplies he needed were a cauldron, a good amount of fake coins, creative prizes and, of course, an enchanted frog. The frog could be stuffed for sanitary purposes, though that would take away from the live effect. Adam drew a design of his booth. His sketching skills had improved over the summer and he had an eye for detail which helped him immensely in Transfiguration and in his sketches. He finished what looked like an adequate version of his booth and submitted it.

Dimitri Porter

August 15, 2013 11:01 PM
Dimitri gave a lot of thought to the idea of the booth that he and Ava would be doing for the fair this term. He had suggested the two of them get some practice with their art work by doing a caricature booth for the other students with a tip jar. They had both agreed (with the headmistress’ approval) that they would be donating their tips to a worthy cause. Dimitri had decided that he was going to let Ava choose who they donated their money to. He had absolute faith that she would choose something good to donate it to. He sat down sometime after the return feast and tried sketching out a few ideas on how he would like the booth to look. After several failed attempts at a design concept (all of which littered the floor in his dorm room) he finally had an idea that seemed right to him. He only hoped that Ava would think so to when she saw what they built for the two of them. Once he had everything mapped out pretty decently, he went to bed and tried to get some sleep.

After getting himself ready for the day, he grabbed his sketchbook and book bag and headed out of the common room. He hurried over to Cascade Hall to both grab a quick breakfast and to post up his booth request. He wanted to make sure that he got that in and had a chance to eat before going to class. Glancing at his notes on the sketchpad with the picture he drew of what he’d like to see it look like, he added his information to the booth sign up.

Dimitri Porter and Ava Fletcher, Caricature booth. Arts and crafts. I would like to see a booth where the front looks like a giant white paint palette filled with blobs of different colors of paint. Alongside the paint palette, I would like to see a giant, life-sized paint brush with a red handle and brown bristles. Across the top of the booth we would like a sign that reads “Caricatures-R-Us”. The materials we will need are: four folding chairs, two work tables, 4 pads of large plain drawing paper, 2 sets of charcoal pencils, 2 sets of markers, two drawing easels and a couple of painting smocks. We were hoping to set up a tip jar that we can donate to a good cause. He hoped that he had included everything that the builders would need to make an awesome booth for them.

Ji-Eun Park

August 19, 2013 4:38 PM
Since the fair had been announced, Ji-Eun had been wondering what she could do for it. She had been comforted by the fact that she could fall back on helping out Waverly with her booth for the baking club, and thus still be contributing, but she really wanted to come up with an idea of her own. The perfect idea had come to her in Charms class, when Emrys had shown so much interest in Hangul, the Korean alphabet. It was something she knew a lot about, and it seemed like other people enjoyed finding out about it, which gave her the confidence to give it a go. The only downside was that she would probably have to run it by herself but the timeslots meant it would be possible for her to enjoy the rest of the fair, and it would mean she got to meet a lot of people.

Student: Ji-Eun Park
Booth: Korean Cultural Booth
Booth Type: Information.

She had a number of ideas besides writing people's names in Hangul for them, though she noted down that she would need ink and parchment for that. A lot of things, including her calligraphy pens, she would get from home. She could get her mother to send some of their traditional outfits so that people could dress up. She also thought she might play some music and teach people dances but it depended on the type of person who came over, and how confident she was feeling. She loved to dance in private, and to learn with her friends, but she wasn't so sure about sharing it all with a crowd.

Regarding the style of the booth, she requested an open plan booth, with the panels painted white, red and blue (the colours used on the Korean flag. Admittedly there was a small amount of black too, but she thought that would look gloomy). She would require a writing surface and a hanging rail for clothing. Satisfied with her idea, she popped the form into the box.

Linus Macaulay

August 19, 2013 4:52 PM
Since the announcement at the beginning of term regarding student-run booths, Linus had been considering whether or not to take part. Now the time had come to officially register, the sixth year was drawn to participate. This had little to do with his desire to be an integral and interactive part of the student body, although that probably wouldn't hurt his image, but he was more interested in the opportunity this presented to demonstrate his skill and expertise for staff and student alike to admire.

The idea for an entertainment booth that Linus had in mind had originally been inspired by the mirror maze in the preceding year's challenges, but his final plans were being shaped heavily by the reading in his advanced charms textbooks and classes. He had an idea in mind, but hadn't yet sorted out all the kinks, and would possibly need to talk to Professor Olivers to sort it out before submitting his fully-completed registration, but he could at least sign up now with the very basic form of his plan.

Linus Macaulay, Hidden Reflections, Entertainment Booth.

The Crotalus student added his details to the list, and did not need to leave any room for any helpers. He wouldn't spend the entire duration at his booth, as he fully intended to enjoy the fair with his girlfriend, but his stall shouldn't need any supervision once it was properly set up; he would merely need to return periodically to check that the charms were still in place.

His grand plan was to have two mirrors, each charmed to represent a different part, or concept, of the viewer. Ideally, he would charm one to show the spectator as he or she saw himself, and the other, in ironic opposition, a mirror that displayed a person in the way in which they were viewed by others. However, he had yet to ascertain whether he would actually be able to pull of these rather complicated effects. He immediately made a note to speak with professor Olivers at her earliest convenience, and took away his blank registration form to complete more fully in the future.

Charlie B-F-R

August 19, 2013 5:18 PM
Thoughts of abandoning his 'stupid girly booth' were but a dim and distant memory. Following hugs from Julian and the first meeting with his volunteers, Charlie was full of his usual enthusiasm. Darina had lots of useful things and ideas, and Portia just oozed class and style. Darina had also agreed with his style theme, rather than going for something loud and proud, which he'd thought might be a point of contention between them. He was feeling so happy about things, that he was very tempted to note down the booth type as 'Fabulous' but he didn't think that would get him very far.

Name: Charlie B-F-R
Booth name: La Salon
Booth type: Entertainment

The directive that booth constructors should be given as much information as possible had been taken so seriously as to possibly make that instruction be regretted. It was complete with sketches. They showed an open plan booth in black, with 'La Salon' in swirly writing across the back (there were notes about and samples of the way the letters should look). In one corner, stood an elegant white pedestal with a fern on it. On the walls, were ornate white picture frames, some with images from edgy style magazines (to be approved by him), others turned into mirrors. There was a row of curvy white chairs (which, it was noted, should be adjustable in height) along the back, facing a large mirror. There were various shelves and cabinets for supplies around the station. Charlie included the inventory of hair styling materials and make-up provided by the volunteers, noting that any additional supplies the school had would be welcomed but that it would not be strictly necessary (although, really, you could never have too many bobby pins, and a lipstick in rose really was essential).

He checked the form several times, feeling slightly fretful about entrusting his vision to someone else. But, having little choice, he resigned himself to simply slipping it into the box and praying.

OOC – Portia's author has told me that she intends to have her sign up and that she would have been at the meeting.

Aria Yale

August 19, 2013 8:48 PM
Aria knew from the moment Jade had mentioned needing to raise money for the Horse Lovers Club that if she had decided to have a booth during the festival, Aria was going to join in. Aria did not currently participate in many clubs, but the Horse Lovers Club was one she had been a part of since the beginning and felt the most comfortable in. It didn’t matter that she was different there because they all had the love for the same thing. Horses.

Because of her shared love with these creatures, she wanted to do what she could to help the club keep on its feet and do the things Jade had discussed in their meetings. Aria thought a trip to a Horse Ranch would be wonderful, but only if the Horses were free to run wild and not stuck in small little stall the entire duration of their life, but she’d have to find out those facts before she left. For now, she was going to help where she could and since Jade had signed up for a booth, Aria figured she would help with that.

Aria Yale, Booth Worker

She wasn’t exactly sure if that was how she was supposed to sign up to help out a booth, but it would have to do and Jade would know where to have her help. Aria had even done some mini horse sculptures and small bits of pottery and ceramics in horse themes. They weren’t top notch quality since she was still learning, but since her father had helped her out with a lot of the details, they weren’t really all that bad either. Jade didn’t have to sell them there if she didn’t want to and it wasn't like Aria knew for certain if someone would even want one, but at least it was another option for her to have.

Satisfied with her sign up and the progress she was making on everything to help, Aria went into the Hall to have some lunch.

Virginia Bellrose

August 19, 2013 9:22 PM
Virginia had wanted to have a booth at the fair. Her only problem was that she had no idea what sort of booth she would have wanted to run. She wasn’t very creative and was slightly worried that she would not have anyone to help her. There was that part of her that truly believed if she was busy with a booth, her friend would all have a good time without her and she would miss out on fun moments that would distance her from them. She already had a short supply of friends; she couldn’t lose any of them.

Luck was on her side though, when she happened to notice that Adam had signed up a booth for himself. There were slots beneath his name for helpers and Ginny thought this would be a great opportunity to spend time with him. She was happy that those who were participating in booths only had to run them during specific times so that they could all still enjoy the festivities, which meant that she could help Adam out and still not miss anything with her friends. Maybe even Francesca could help out! That would be so much fun! Although, Ginny wasn’t sure this would be Francesca’s thing.

Shrugging to herself, Ginny pulled out a self-inking quill and signed herself up.

Derry Four

August 20, 2013 9:48 PM
Derry was very excited about his booth idea, and Reggie's approval of the plan made him even more eager to start implementing it. So when the Booth Registration sign-up went up, the hardest thing he had to do was figure out if it was Arts and Crafts or Entertainment.

As he filled out the registration sheet, he decided it was probably Arts and Crafts since Photography was an art and each visitor of the booth would be taking home a photo uniquely crafted for them.

He included in his list of supplies that he would need a camera (preferably antique looking, but this was only a theme request and not totally necessary if only modern looking cameras were available), a bunch of historical costumes, some lighting equipment, a changing room, and maybe a couple of backdrops.

On the actual sign-up sheet, he entered the basic information:

Derry Pierce, Olde Tyme Photos, Arts & Crafts (we dress booth visitors in historical clothing and take souvenir photos of them)

Ava Fletcher

August 21, 2013 3:19 PM
After breakfast, Ava went up to the booth registration to check out what Dimitri had written for their booth. She had seen him put a paper in the box just before she went up, so she reached in and pulled the stack out. Sure enough, his was on top and after putting the other papers back in, she read what he wrote. Ava smiled as she read everything that he had written down and made a mental note to tell him that she thought he'd done a good job. He'd also left the cause open ended which was nice- this way they would have time to deliberate a little longer on what cause they would choose- there were so many that her head was spinning! She put the paper back in the box with the others and went upstairs to brush her teeth and then try and find Dimitri to tell him that she liked his concept a lot.

OOC: I know this is really short, but I wasn't sure if I should post something separate or not as Dimitri wrote both his and Ava's name down for the booth. I decided to post something under it just in case.

Regina Parker

August 21, 2013 6:53 PM
Reggie was seriously excited for the Fair. She had thought more about Derry’s idea for the photo booth and she had to say that she was really enthusiastic for the idea. She thought that it would be a wonderful memory for everyone at the Fair if they had a souvenir Olde Tyme Picture to take home with them. Reggie planned on making sure she and Derry had a picture of their own so that she could make copies and place in various things. A frame, for one. And her scrapbook. She’d want him to have one too. There was no say in what would happen once they had graduated, but pictures would always be there as a memory of the great times that they shared.
She saw his sign up not long after the Registration sign up had gone up, but Reggie hadn’t signed up immediately. Mostly because she didn’t have a quill at hand for her to do so. And then she sort of pushed it to the back of her mind for a few days. It wasn’t until the end of the week that she remembered to do it at all. It shouldn’t be blamed on her though, RATS courses were keeping her busy that she felt like she hardly had time to breathe.

Finding a quill at the bottom of her bag, Reggie signed her name up beneath Derry’s.

Evan Brockert

August 22, 2013 10:04 PM
Evan was looking forward to the fair. He was excited about doing a booth and sharing his artwork. He felt that art was meant to be shared with people and doing so made him feel good, proud of himself. Nobody could take that away from him, no matter how things turned out with Nora and the bet.

He still wasn't sure he trusted her to be honest about the whole thing. Didn't trust her methods, he knew she had joined both clubs, a fact which he rather enjoyed, knowing that she wasn't interested in art or fashion. Still, he wished he'd found people who would be more...objective but he honestly didn't know of anyone either than Nora herself that was signed up for both clubs. How did Evan know she wouldn't just declare herself to be the winner? He'd told her that she couldn't help Portia but otherwise it just really didn't seem fair.

Plus, it really hurt. Nora really had nothing to gain by this, she couldn't possibly care that much about any sum of money. All this was about was making herself out to be right and superior. Meanwhile, Evan felt he had everything to lose. He was the one who would look bad, like a failure. In front of his friends, family, betrothed, and the entire school. His future in-laws would likely find out too and what if they decided to call it off? That would be embarrassing to his whole family. It was starting to rather bother him that people just didn't have faith in him to do things right when it came to things like this as well.

Sighing to himself, he placed his name on the sign up sheet,

Evan Brockert, Art Exhibit, Arts and Crafts, Items needed-Display pedastals, chair, labels.

He had placed the second item on the list so he'd have a place to sit. Most people had not thought to ask for this for some reason. Did they plan to be standing up all day? That could get really uncomfortable. In some cases, such as the Petting Zoo, there were things that required people to be on their feet, but what about when nobody else was there? It seemed, ironically, that they had thought of design first-for Evan, this seemed unnecessary, as design was whatever he happened to make, no pre-planned theme-and he was the one who'd thought of something practical.

The Aladren had also left places for any Art Club member to sign up beneath his name. They were welcome to display their artwork too and encouraged to do so. That was what the labels were for, to say who the work belonged to. Evan also added that they would need wooden "walls" to hang pictures on, if anyone painted something. He also hoped that someone else would sign up to watch the booth, so he could enjoy the rest of the fair as well.

Henny B-F-R

August 24, 2013 5:21 AM
Henny had very much wanted to run her own booth. In some ways, she felt it was expected of her, as a prefect. However, the book club really didn't lend itself to such things, and no inspiring ideas had occurred to her. They apparently had to other people, but the more she looked at the growing list of booths, the less anything original or comparable occurred to her. They sounded fun though, and she was definitely looking forward to trying most of them out.

If she couldn't come up with her own idea, she could at least help out with someone else's. Helping out with the baking club booth seemed like a good option. It was bound to be busy and popular, so Waverly would need lots of help, and it would be a fun one to be involved with. Charlie seemed to have plenty of girls of his age fluttering around him and willing to help with his booth, so she was saved the guilt of feeling that she should do that. She would support him, and allow herself to be made over, but he didn't need her on hand. She signed up to Waverly's booth, and headed to library.

Marcus Crosby

August 31, 2013 10:04 PM
Among the things Marcus liked, two of them would, he realized, combine wonderfully for a fair booth. The first of those things was making and eating candy apples. Mom always made them around the house—and by hand!—and upon a request from a curious then-seven year old, Marcus learned how to do it too. The whole process was a lot of fun! Now, the second thing was helping people. At first, gooey apples that gave somebody cavities might not have appeared to helpful, he knew just what to do. By asking for tips, he could make a small profit, all of which he could donate to charity. It’d be awesome!

Wait, there was a third thing Marcus liked that he wanted to be involved: hanging out with Melanie. He was sure to ask her before signups got too close if she’d like to help out, and since she agreed, he was really excited. Candy apples, charity, and Melanie! That day was going to be practically the best day ever!

When the signup finally came, at first he blinked in confusion at the requirement he had not considered. His booth needed a name? Why had he not realized that? The Teppenpaw conceded that with such a short amount of thinking time, it would not be the greatest name ever, but when he finally picked one, he was satisfied with a reasonable amount of cleverness.

Students: Marcus Crosby and Melanie Lennox.
Booth: An Apple A Day.
Booth Type: Food Booth.

Just having it be official inspired even more happiness for the blond. This fair thing was really happening! Sure, he did not really expect to make a lot of money here, but whatever he could do to help the less fortunate, whatever little money he could make, would surely brighten up somebody’s day. Something was better than nothing, after all. Every little bit helped.

Thad Pierce

As he was involved in a number of clubs, and could have potentially made up something else unrelated to any of them for a booth, Thaddeus had his pick of options for what to do at the Fair this year. However, Henny had chosen not to do anything for the book club (aside from selling books, he wasn't really sure what the book club could have done, and this was a non-profit fair), and she signed up to help Waverly with the Baking Club. Thad feared he might eat too many of the wares if he did that, so he considered his other choices and decided his best choice was to help Evan with the Art Exhibit.

Not because he was good at art. He was actually quite terrible at art. He was pretty sure his best production from the meetings so far was something he'd created when he was teaching himself how to use a protractor and ruler for some geometry problems he'd found in one of the Mathematics books in the library and then added some paint to it.

No, he'd chosen the Art Exhibit because that was what Evan was doing and it was only right to continue working with Evan for the Midsummer Events, as he had done that every year prior to this one and saw no pressing reason to end the tradition.

So after Evan signed up the Art Club's booth, Thad added his name below his roommate's.

As far as the end-of-the-year events went, Alicia was generally happy enough. The ball was, of course, a delight now that she was established enough to not have to worry much about any way she appeared there being questioned, the Concert was challenging but fun, and the bonfire was essentially just an outdoor party. Nothing special, but nothing to really worry about, either, except for having to sleep in a tent, and as long as she had one person (Henny) around that she could stand and didn’t spend more time in the tent than could be avoided, that was all workable, too.

The Fair, however, was the exception to ‘generally.’ Alicia hated it. She had hated it the first time she’d had to attend it, and so far, it didn’t seem like it was going to improve upon repetition. It just wasn’t an event which played to any of her strengths, and none of her usual ways of getting around things she didn’t like applied to it. Try as she would, she could not think of a single pretext for grouping all her friends together in a booth, so the options were either splitting up (bad, as she never really liked them spending too much time around other people they might decide were better investments than she was) or else just going as audience members rather than contributors (bad, as they were all playing for prizes and needed as much favorable staff attention as possible). Taking a position of ‘every man for himself’ (bad, as the beginning of the end happened the day they didn’t trust her absolutely anymore) wouldn’t help, either, because Alicia had no talents which were suited to that kind of exhibition: her hobbies were ancient Roman literature and rock climbing, and she seriously doubted most people would be interested in the former or that the school would allow her to offer lessons in the latter. If she had taken up Sanskrit or Arabic as a kid instead of Latin and been able to work some charms in one of those, she might have had a small audience, but that was still on her miles-long to-do list, and probably a good way down, as she was still bumbling her way through Spanish and, in spite of her distaste for it because of her family history there, would probably get more near-term use out of German if she did try for another language in the near-future. She was out of luck.

That left either accepting defeat again (unacceptable) or playing second fiddle to someone else (undesirable, but endurable under the right circumstances). Henny was with Waverly, which she didn’t much like, and it might be a good idea to continue to network with Waverly as well – but then, Evan had his own thing going, she was not sure of his organization skills, and that could be embarrassing for everyone. Of course, Thad would probably be with him, but…well, he wasn’t now, and technically, she could engage in the visual arts. She had been forced to learn to sew when she was little and still spent a lot of time at home working on needlepoint or cross-stitch, just to fill up the hours when they wouldn’t let her leave the house and to have, sometimes, more personalized items to give people on appropriate occasions. She had a ton of finished projects at home, both on display and just in boxes in closets, she could have someone send her, some of which she thought were actually pretty good if she was the one who’d sewn them, and could probably still whip up a doll dress or two at need.

Hopefully, though, she had enough junk here and at home to not have to resort to that. She really did not have time to sew much on top of day-to-day living and starting to review the thousand and one concept-building, but functionally useless, little spells she’d learned in her first few years here just on the off chance that a specific incantation she hadn’t used in four years would appear on the CATS. Knowing those wouldn’t, she was sure, be the key to a high score, but while she hadn’t mentioned it to anyone else in anything other than a joking tone, she was secretly hoping she could somehow pull a perfect one on at least one test and come as close as possible on all of them. That was not an endeavor greatly aided by art projects.

Alicia Bauer, she wrote in Evan’s sign-up area, indulging herself in a few more flourishes than she normally would use on a sign-up sheet. Needlework, she added to explain her presence at the table. If Evan objected, he could take that up with her separately, she would smooth it all over, and they would be agreed that a pillow in something close to her mother's china pattern was art. It had certainly taken more skill and practice than some of Evan's...things, anyway, and it was a nice feminine skill for a sweet, harmless girl like her to show off, if she could refrain from gagging long enough.
