Amelia Pierce was having a miserable week. Despite it being months before flu season officially began, Benjamin had come home from his summer playgroup with a fever and vomiting. He then proceeded to pass the bug around to the rest of the family despite Gabriella's best efforts to prevent it from doing so. Bel had been in a foul mood for her sad little birthday party that morning, with most of the attendees and the birthday girl herself all feeling nauseous, achy, and either freezing or sweating (or even both at the same time) with fever.
Amelia was almost glad - almost - to get out of Boston for a fresh and healthier scene, but apperation with an upset stomach was no better than a portkey without one, and she'd had to make a very undignified run from the staff's apperation point, through the school's front doors, and then into the nearest bathroom before she threw up. She had made it, but only just. She did not envy Derwent Four his wagon ride tonight.
Once she had flushed down the bits of her lunch and birthday cake that had come up to revisit her, she made her way over to Dylan Bailey's domain to make sure she was not at risk of further infecting the entire first year class if she handed out the sorting potion tonight, but the school's medic confirmed Gabby's medical opinion - by the time the symptoms started to appear, it was already past its contagious phase, so she was in the clear. He did offer her a potion to get her through the feast, though, which she accepted gladly. She was Deputy Head and Head of Crotalus. There were responsibilities she felt she needed to perform tonight regardless of how much she would rather just go to bed and sleep until October.
She had managed the sorting ceremony without passing out or throwing up, which she counted as a victory. An even greater one was won when she even managed to eat and keep down a few bites of dinner. She did take the opportunity to tell Kiva that she would not be teaching Flying Lessons tomorrow and she would need a substitute for the day, and possibly the rest of the week.
Now, as everyone was finishing up with their meals, the potion was starting to wear off. Fortunately, the only thing between her and a long night's rest was gathering up the Crotalus first years and leading them to their new home. She stood up, grabbed onto the table as her vision briefly went black, waited it out, then headed over to the table where the red students had sat after their sorting. "Crotalus First Years," she called out, not quite as loudly as she normally did in deference to her headache, but loud enough to easily be heard by those at the table, "Please gather around me."
She probably looked only a little better than death warmed over tonight, with her skin sickly pale, her hair not quite as carefully done as she normally made it for a Welcoming Feast, a light sheen of sweat on her forehead, and a bit of waver in her stand as the light-headedness had not completely vanished with the return of her vision. But she was there, and she was their Head of House, and she was supposed to lead them home, so, by Merlin, she was going to do that. Still, a comment of reassurance was likely in order. "I swear, I have been told by two medical professionals that I am not contagious, so please, gather 'round." Despite those assurances, she still hoped Valerie Lennox had the sense to steer well clear of her until this passed.
The Crotalus batch was smaller this year than the other Houses' crops, which she personally was a little grateful for tonight; it meant fewer children to keep track of. Once she had all the first years she remembered as turning red around her she began the first part of her speech. "Welcome to Sonora Academy and Crotalus House. I am Coach Pierce, your Head of House, and the Deputy Headmistress. I'll be leading you to where you will be living for the next seven years. Please pay attention so you can find your way back here for breakfast tomorrow."
Normally, she made a point to mention that she was from the Boston branch of the Pierce Family, so those who had heard of the disowned branch would have a chance to figure out how they felt about that, but today she just didn't have the energy to bother with such pureblood politics.
"Keep up," she instructed as she began leading them out of the Hall and through the school corridors to where the Crotalus entrance was located.
OOC: Hello, and welcome to Crotalus House. This post continues in the Crotalus Common Room. You may continue with your threads below due to a neat concept we call fuzzy time. It lets us be involved in multiple threads that take place at the same time in Real Life, but at different times in the school's chronology. So you will have finished eating and any conversations going on during the Feast before the events in this post takes place. You do not need to reply here unless you want to.
