Asking to the dance (open to any 1st/2nd year girl)
by Keme RunningBear
OOC: minus the select few mentioned in the post. Also, this is set prior to the 3rd challenge BIC:
During winter break, Keme had discussed the first half of the year with his family and peers back on the reservation. Most of the children didn’t seem too enthused about leaving their homes to attend a more prestigious school since Keme said nothing really positive regarding those he went to school with, but the adults of the tribe seemed genuinely happy with the course load he had been provided and the magical skills that he was developing. From what Keme could tell, they intended to keep him enrolled and the possibility of sending more to the school remained open.
Keme really wasn’t sure if that was a blessing or a curse. He really didn’t mind Sonora as far as things went. His roommate left him alone and that was just fine for Keme. Although, there was something strange about Rajid. After the last moon phase, Keme decided to keep tabs. He was gone for a period of time each month and it had Keme questioning things. But this he left to himself as he didn’t want to raise anyone else’s suspicions if he could help it. But aside from his roommate of whom he didn’t mind, Keme didn’t have friends. This concerned his mother and father. Keme had plenty of friends on their land, but he didn’t make any connections while at school. As much as they wanted to reach out and make people aware that the Blackfoot tribe still existed, they wanted their son to prosper in his new environment even more.
Because of their concern, they asked something of him that he hadn’t considered before. They asked him to secure a date to the ball. Keme didn’t want to go to the ball let alone go with someone he hardly even knew. If they all said no to him, he didn’t think of it as a huge loss, and he truly felt that they would, but he would do as he was asked because that was how he was raised. The problem was, he had no idea who to ask.
It had some vague idea of who not to ask. First and Foremost, Jude Butler. He did not know her, but he had seen her around. From what he knew, she was a Muggleborn. This did not bother him as although his tribe was completely magical and had been for centuries, they were not prejudice against others. Native Americans had been shunned and had stones thrown at them for all of existence, it would be hypocritical for them to do the same to someone else. What bothered him about her was the fact that she seemed to always be on edge. He watched people when they gathered for the challenges. He was always intrigued by those who seemed most excited and those who seemed far too fragile. She was of the latter. That was not a good thing. The idea that someone could break at any given moment did not seem like a good date to him.
On the other spectrum, there was Effie Arbon. She was snobby in the worst way. Although she had never said anything directly to him or anyone else as far as he knew, he observed enough to see it written all over her. Of the extensive research his family had done on the families that attended this school, the Arbons were one of the ones he was told to be weary of. His tribe may have money enough to cover many new generations to come; people like the Arbons would always look down upon them. His family did not want him to be associated with her or those like her. The problem was though that Keme wasn’t sure who was really like her. He didn’t think Isabel was, but they were best friends. It was hard to decipher sometimes , but he still had many years to figure it out.
McKinley Andrews was another one he did not want to go to the ball with. She was too strange for him. And really, too into herself to fully appreciate the little things in life. Also, he was certain she was really into Carter Browning, so he did not want to get involved in that. Everyone else though, he thought was safe to ask, it didn’t matter who.
During dinner, just before the third challenge was announced, Keme approached one of the girls he thought would be okay to ask. Bowing politely, Keme gave them a crooked, somewhat uncertain smile, “If you do not already have an escort to the ball, would it be alright if I were to escort you?”

Now that her sister wasn't quite so sick, Willow wasn't feeling quiet as sad and unsociable as she had been the first half of the year. She wanted to at least appear happy and friendly-Teppenpaws were friendly by definition-and make new friends, no matter what she was feeling inside at times. She'd never let on and hoped she hadn't come across as too much of a downer prior to midterm. The first year didn't want to be the sort of person that brought others down, then nobody would want to be her friend and she did want friends.
Before, she'd actually felt a tiny bit guilty about being genuinely happy in any way despite the front she'd put up. Like it was wrong to be so somehow. She just hoped that if people didn't view her as being extremely happy and cheerful, which was unlikely, they'd just think she was quiet. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing. At least, she didn't think it was, some might not agree. Adam was really quiet and hadn't been very popular. On the other hand, Autumn was even quieter than Willow was-in fact, the Teppenpaw had once been quite a happy girl-and she'd made two best friends at school and quite a few in treatment who shared her problems and gave her lots of support. Besides, Nora said that loud hyper people appeared dumb. Of course, Gemma was very energetic and enthusiastic and the first year didn't think her roommate was stupid at all.
Willow entered the hall. She always made an effort to eat a good meal so she wouldn't get sick and her parents wouldn't have to worry about her too. Not that she ate too much because that wasn't healthy either. Today, she was in the mood for lasagna and the elves here made it really good. They were amazing cooks and Italian food was some of her favorite. It was something Autumn would never eat though. Even when she'd been well and eating she was very picky about eating only things that were low in fat and calories. At least after she came home from the hospital. There they made her eat other things. Which Willow honestly thought was a good thing, but Autumn's illness was partially about control, and as long as she was eating, their parents let her older sister control what to a certain extent.
She took a seat and had helped herself to her chosen meal when Keme Runningbear came up to her. Willow didn't know him well, he seemed to be a quiet boy who kept mostly to himself, sort of like she had been. She figured it was just his personality though. That was just how some people were. Still, they'd never spoken before, not that she would mind doing so. She'd love to make friends with just about anyone, be less lonely. It didn't look right to stick with relatives all the time, besides Willow spent more time with Hope than the others, and she was a sixth year and would be graduating next year.
What Keme said next surprised her. Fortunately, she controlled herself to keep her mouth from flying open and that it wasn't full at the time. "I'd love to go with you." Willow replied. She had a date to the ball! She didn't expect anything out of it other than possibly friendship. Still, it was so exciting and she couldn't wait to tell Hope as well as write her parents and sisters.
Keme had been expecting a firm ‘no’ or a polite ‘no, thanks’ to his request. He was not a popular boy, he was not Mr. Personality, nor was he someone a person could easily get to know. He wasn’t sure why it was so difficult for him to feel comfortable at Sonora. It wasn’t as though people were rude to him or cast him aside the way he had originally though that they would, so really, he had no reason to not be more open to them. But, he just found himself shutting everyone out. Perhaps having a roommate who was just like him didn’t help in matters. If Rajid had been a social butterfly, there was a chance that Keme would have become more open to people. But that was neither here nor there.
Willow’s response to his request surprised him. Really surprised him. His dark eyes widened and he stared at her for a moment. He didn’t expect anyone to agree to go with him. Most especially a girl from one of those families of whom he had come to realize held all the cards and of whom he thought looked down on him the most. But she had agreed to go with him without even hesitating. He didn’t know how to respond to that. He was stunned. Willow had wanted to go to the ball with him and not someone who he presumed to be more acceptable. That stunned him.
Realizing he was staring, Keme looked down for a moment before returning his gaze to her. He had a date to the ball. He wasn’t rejected. That was good. That was great, even. He had a date. He visibly relaxed when the news sank in and his uncertain smile became a genuine one. “You would?” He asked before quickly adding, “That’s great, thank you for accepting me.” He gave a polite bow of thanks. “My dress robes are black, so there is no worry of matching.” Keme realized that such a comment might seem out of place. “My mother wrote me when she sent the outfit and said the girl I ask may be concerned about such things. I didn’t want for you to be concerned.” He probably looked like a fool having said that, but what was done was done. Keme wasn’t prepared for all of this and he was clearly out of practice for having a casual conversation.
