New Aladrens, this way! by Professor Fawcett
John enjoyed the Opening Feast as usual – the quality of the food never failed to impress even though he was married to an excellent cook as well, and it was pleasant to see his colleagues again and hear some reports of their summers, much as it was for the students with their classmates in that way – but as he still had other responsibilities tonight, he was glad enough to see it end. It was going to be an interesting year, and it would present many difficulties, but he was focused on the completion of each of his duties as it presented itself, be it doing something, such as giving his opening address to the new Aladrens, or planning for something he would have to do later. Or handling an unexpected situation on his feet, though he hoped good planning would minimize the number of times he had to do that. Some, though, were inevitable when dealing with children under even the best of circumstances.As the meal drew to its conclusion, he stood up and gathered together the handful of new Aladrens. It was, he thought, going to be an interesting group. The first years in general would be, if he wasn’t too much mistaken, but he was not yet quite old enough to like life too boring.
Nearly, though. He was old enough to wish sometimes, now, that he had spent his youth on alchemy instead of society. If he had somehow found a measure of success, he thought he might have had a much easier time now. At the very least, he might be a little more energetic, and not having the occasional day where he did think he was old enough to allow life to become all boredom around him, at least from what he had gathered of how it worked from the texts he’d read on the subject, both out of curiosity and as a sideline to his second career in the field of Potions.
“Good evening,” he said when he had his new students. “I am Professor Fawcett, the Head of your new House. I welcome you to Sonora, and to Aladren, and hope you will all be happy here. I will now escort you to the House common room.”
