Neeka concluded reading the letter, glad to hear from her guardian. While she had just recently seen him over midterm, she grew quite lonesome here. While typically rather extroverted, everything at Sonora felt backwards and wrong, so she hadn’t really talked to anyone. Everything she had expected about the school had proved incorrect upon arrival.
The Pecari had been under the impression Lilac Crosby—though her last name was different now, Brockert?—was still here. She had been very excited to see her again, to show her how much she had grown up and exclaim how much she had missed her. Instead, from what she had overheard, Lilac was a married mother now and no longer worked at Sonora. She had missed her by only a year.
Some relatives of Lilac’s attended the school, but Neeka doubted they remembered her. It had been so long ago, and their interactions had been brief at best. She had decided not to seek them out, though if things happened that she happened across them, she did not intend to shy away. She would let her chips fall where they might. That was the adventure of life, right?
She decided it was time to get into action. The dark-skinned girl was going to start enjoying herself; this experience was exactly what she made it, and she wanted it to be better. She figured to begin making friends, she could start interacting more with her roommates, but as she currently sat in the Cascade Hall, she decided it would be more effective to just greet the next person that walked by.
Brown eyes fell upon an approaching figure, and she felt a smile form. It took less effort than she had expected. Letting herself open up was not as hard as she had thought it might be. “Hi,” she offered cheerily. “I’m Neeka Campbell. And you are?”
