Aladren was not the House with the greatest – or even second-greatest – numerical gain this year, but John refrained from being disappointed just yet, deciding instead to wait and see more about the quality of the students acquired by all of the Houses. There was, after all, a reason why Aladren was a strong House despite being one of the two smaller ones, almost always ranking behind Crotalus and Pecari in numbers but – as far as he was concerned – never coming in second to anyone in quality.He kept an eye on the Hall in general, since he would teach them all, during the Feast, but did keep a closer eye on his own table than the others, making sure the new Aladrens were getting along nicely and that none of the older ones were attempting to kill each other, anyway. He was a bit worried about the fifth year boys, as he suspected half the staff had been for some time now, but though Mr. Stratford was visibly disappointed and he and Arthur Carey both gave the staff table looks John didn’t especially like, there didn’t seem to be any confrontations in the works, anyway. He agreed that Mr. Layne had been the correct choice for prefect, but did worry a little whether or not they had thrown the poor boy in over his head with his roommates.
Only time would tell, though, and it would tell after the first years were settled into their new rooms. At the end of the Feast, he collected the formerly blue students and smiled benignly at them from over his glasses.
“Good evening,” he said. “I am Professor Fawcett, the Head of Aladren House, which you now belong to if you turned blue during the Sorting ceremony. If you did not, I can assist you in finding your correct Head of House now.” He wasn’t surprised when this proved to be unnecessary, but the offer always had to be made, just in case. “I will now show you to our House common room, which will be your home for the next seven years. Come with me.”
