Tossed on waves of woe (tag Jehan) by Dorian

On the last Sunday of term, the MARS music room took on a now-familiar appearance for Dorian. There was a comfortable two seater settee upholstered in green, with a high back perfect for sinking into. Next to this stood a record player, atop a neat wooden unit into which it fitted exactly. The small door of the unit was painted in a similar shade of green to the sofa, and opened to reveal that day’s choice of records, always well suited to their desires or moods. Beyond this there was little in the room, because there was little that they needed beyond good music and good company. Only to save it being entirely stark and bare, the furniture rested on a large rug, with swirling blues, yellows and greens, and this was echoed in a piece of art that hung opposite the sofa where abstract shapes in the first two colours flowed in from either side, exploding into green as they met in the middle and fused together. Today, in a nod to the season that was soon to be upon them, the record player was edged with tinsel and a tree stood at the other end of the settee. There was one very flat square parcel underneath it, wrapped neatly in gold with red ribbons.

“Salut,” Dorian greeted with a smile, giving Jehan a warm hug. He lingered for a second longer than usual holding on to Jehan, his elation at seeing him giving way to a small sigh as they broke apart. “At the end of the week, it is time to go home…” he stated sadly. “It will be very good to see again my sister, and my parents…” his tone strongly implied that there was a ‘but’ there. Jehan was well aware that there was a fifth member of Dorian’s family who had not been mentioned in the list of people it would be nice to see, and that there were good reasons why not. Matthieu’s lack of understanding, his teasing, his goading of Dorian had been covered. Although it wasn’t just the fact of not wanting to see Matthieu. There were factors that made him actively want to still be at Sonora, not just ones that made him not want to go home…

“It make me feel… coupable,” he sighed, moving across to the settee and flopping down. “That I do not, with all my heart, wish to go home and see my family. This is how a person is supposed to feel, especially for Christmas. But the Meathead is so provoquant. And I miss you.”

It's ok, you'll never drown alone by Jehan

Jehan and Dorian’s times together in their own special version of the MARS music room were always Jehan’s favourite part of every week. A little haven of sorts, here they were able to relax and share all their thoughts, poems, music…everything that no one else quite understood. Jehan had never experienced this before, having a friend who didn’t think he was too fanciful. Victor was never one to be mean to his brother, but he just didn’t get Jehan in the way that Dorian seemed to.

Jehan fingered a certain little package in his pocket as he walked in, putting aside the slight nervousness it gave him in favour of returning Dorian’s hug. Jehan liked hugs, and Dorian’s in particular. If he ever had to describe home, he wouldn’t define it as a particular place (and especially not the Callahan house), but rather hugs with certain people. Hugs made him happy. But for once, that didn’t seem to be true for Dorian. The other boy sighed a little, and looked rather downcast.

The reason for this was quickly given, and it brought Jehan down from his cloud of happiness. He knew that Dorian’s relationship with his brother wasn’t so good. The things he’d heard about Matthieu, vague as they had been, made Jehan want to go against his often-gentle nature and give Dorian’s brother a solid punch to the face, at the very least.

Dorian’s sadness made Jehan’s heart go out to his friend and, joining him on the sofa, Jehan half draped himself over Dorian in another hug. “It’s not your fault. And at least the holidays aren’t forever and ever, mon ami,” he pointed out, slightly picking up on Dorian’s use of the odd French word. “Not like before we came to Sonora. And I’ll owl you every day, and maybe we can even do fire calls, although I’d have to go in my father’s office for that, if he’ll let me.” Jehan hated going in his father’s office, but it was an easy sacrifice to make in order to talk to Dorian.

He frowned, hating the thought of their impending separation, and buried his face in Dorian’s shoulder. Sonora contained both Victor and Dorian, so he could happily stay here forever. He was sure his parents would prefer that too.

“Let’s just stay right here,” he suggested, his voice muffled by the position he was in.

To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die by Dorian

It’s not your fault.

It was simple, but reassuring. He had always felt that Matthieu was the rotten egg of the family, even though on paper he was in some ways so much better… He was the exact fulfilment of a strong, Pureblood boy, the perfect heir with the perfect ideals. Matthieu’s violent temper was, of course, a failing, but that was something that was directed primarily towards Dorian, for his failings. It was nice to have Jehan’s reassurance that it was Matthieu that was the problem.

“That will help,” he nodded, as Jehan assured him that they could write every day and even talk by floo. He had not exactly doubted the effort Jehan would make but it was still soothing to hear it, and think about that. Jehan holding him and using smatterings of French were also welcome, although they underlined his sense that this was in some ways so much home to him now, which was, in some ways, the problem. He wanted to look forward to going home, his biological home, more than he really did. He tried to think of it positively though… How nice to have two homes. To miss and be missed wherever you were. Apart from the looming spectre of Matthieu, that definitely held true.

“There will be many time when Matthieu go out. Maybe for party, maybe because he just crazy enough to practise Quidditch even in winter. So then I have the perfect scene… My family, the hot chocolate, and the fire, avec ta tête dedans,” he smiled.

Of course, Jehan had another solution as well. As his friend lay his head against Dorian’s shoulder, he wanted to reach up and stroke his hair but was prevented by the fact of Jehan’s weight already being against his arm. He didn’t want to disturb Jehan by rearranging himself or make his friend think he was shrugging him off. He settled for resting his own head on the other boy’s instead.

“Ok,” he agreed, a smile playing about his lips, “Perhaps we become one of your tragic stories, yes?” he teased, “The two boy who starve to death because they rather to have beautiful music and beautiful company than to face the cruelty of the world. C'est très poétique, mon camarade.”

A little death each time we part by Jehan

Dorian seemed reassured by the thought of floo calls, which further strengthened Jehan’s resolve to brave his father’s study. After all, his father couldn’t object to Jehan calling a Montoir (not that Jehan cared what his father thought really), and talking to Dorian would be worth all the bad memories of that room. In a way, it would be an act of defiance – Liam Callahan wouldn’t approve of their friendship if he knew it was founded on all the things he disliked about his son.

“Maybe Matthieu will go out all the time,” he suggested, knowing it was impossible but wishing that, for his friend’s sake, it would come true. “Maybe he’ll fall into a snowdrift and remain there, trapped by a unicorn, until he repents and agrees to serve you on bended knee for the rest of your life.” His mind drifted away, vaguely wondering if it would be possible to create such a spell. It would make the world a much nicer place if a spell like that did exist.

Jehan smiled wistfully at Dorian’s suggestion. “That would be so beautiful,” he sighed. “I don’t want you to die, but think – it would be so heartbreaking, and you wouldn’t have to leave me.”

Dorian’s mention of the word poetic reminded Jehan of something. “Oh! I made you a present!” he exclaimed, blushing slightly and twisting so he could remove the small package from his pocket. He was a little nervous about this. It was quite a personal present, although quite inspired (or so he thought), and he really hoped that Dorian would like it. He’d been agonising for ages over what would be a good enough present for his best friend, until he’d finally hit on it as he was falling asleep one evening. Jehan had spent several hours painstakingly using his finest (and hopefully not too wobbly) calligraphy to copy out his favourite poems into a pretty little notebook that he’d been saving for Something Important. Some of them Dorian already knew, and all of them had been selected with great care and consideration.

“Merry Christmas,” he solemnly wished the other boy, holding out the carefully wrapped present. “Someday I’ll actually be able to give you your present on Christmas Day, but for now you can choose when you open it.”

Perhaps when we're together too... by Dorian

“Maybe,” Dorian agreed, “At least, we go to some party, and there he cannot be so horrible,” he explained, his accent sliding further into French on the last word. Sometimes, the words that were most similar were hardest to say. “He must be on good behaviour.” He grinned further at Jehan’s idea of Matthieu becoming trapped by righteous unicorn. “La licorne de la droiture,” he mused, “Perhaps we can learn how to bring him. Normally, the unicorn like people qui sont purs des coeurs. C’est nous, non? he grinned.

He nodded along with Jehan’s analysis of them dying side by side in MARS.

“They say the music room, it has haunted,” he mused, his mind following along the flight of fancy, “And on the last day of term, you can hear the sound of sadness, and some small piece of show tune.” .

His attention was brought back to the present by… well, quite literally it was brought back to the present. The small wrapped one that Jehan was handing him. He half clocked the verb ‘made.’ He thought that implied that Jehan had done the present himself, but he wasn’t sure. There were lots of things were he used ‘faire’ in French but there was a different word in English, and so perhaps the same was true the other way too…

“Here with you,” he answered without hesitation. One of the best parts about giving a gift was seeing the other person’s reaction, and he didn’t want to take that away from Jehan. He also had a feeling that whatever Jehan had made him would not be very safe to open in front of Matthieu. With shaking fingers he unwrapped the small parcel, unveiling the delicate notebook inside.

“Merci, it is very beuatiful,” he thanked Jehan. He picked it up, planning the riffle through the pages, in that satisfying way that one could, catching the drifting scent of clean parchment from the new book. As he did so, he realised how much more was contained in the gift. “Oh, Jehan,” was all he managed, his breath catching as he saw what his friend had done. He gently traced the words with his fingertip, transfixed for a second.

“You do this?” he queried, staring at Jehan. “I… It is perfect,” he took Jehan’s hand and squeezed it. It seemed such a small gesture for such a wonderful thing, but it fitted. Sometimes something small and quiet could express much more.

“I… I get you something too. But I do not do by myself,” he admitted. With a little effort, he levitated the parcel over from under the tree. It was a bit awkward to do so, and it may have been less effort to simply go and pick it up, but he was too comfortable where he was, with the reassuring feeling of Jehan’s warmth beside him.

“Joyeux Noël,” he wished him, handing over the flat, square parcel which contained a copy of the ‘Melodie’ soundtrack.
