Kir ran his fingers along the length of the piano, sounding the satisfying full slide of all the notes before settling down to his music. His father had foisted very few of the traditional Pureblood lessons on him, having been glad to abandon most of what he referred to as ‘that silliness.’ However, Kir’s mother loved music, and had been able to persuade her husband that learning an instrument was not an act of overly strict or pushy parenting, but one of pleasure. There had been moments when Kir had disagreed, when he would have rather done something other than practise, but for the most part he was glad. He didn’t have a tutor bearing down on him now at Sonora, and holidays were too full of other things to take lessons back up for the relatively short space of time, but he still played sometimes, to keep his hand in, and for his own enjoyment.
Right now, he had a particular earworm - one he’d had on and off since the New Year party - and he thought it might help to actually play it, and perhaps see what other songs that led onto, and whether one of them might shift it. Not that he minded as such if it didn’t, it was a good song. He just needed to hear it properly, or as properly as he could recreate it, and whether that vanquished it once and for all, or merely was an enjoyable exercise of it, he didn’t mind. The MARS room provided the music and the piano, and after a little experimenting to get into it, he was ready.
I am what I am, I am my own special creation. So come take a look…
Georgia paused outside the music room, wondering if it was in use. Still, she reasoned if it was, she could either hang with the person there, or leave them to it, if they didn’t seem to have particularly compatible agendas. She pushed open the door, to find that third year boy with the weird name playing piano and singing.
It's my world that I want to have a little pride in My world and it's not a place I have to hide in.
“Interesting,” she smiled. “Is it by a Muggleborn?” she guessed.
“Hm? No, it’s a Muggle song,” Kir responded, his fingers continuing to lightly tap out the melody.
“Oh. You’re…?” she trailed off inquisitively. Those with Muggle knowledge were hard to pin down in terms of heritage, but she always liked to meet them.
“Complicated,” he gave the succinct version of the answer with a smile. “But aware of Muggle culture, yes. You?”
“Same,” she replied, with a smile. “Technically halfblood, but raised in the Muggle world. I guess maybe that song sounds kind of familiar? The words just seemed to fit how things are here.”
“It’s a bit of a gay pride anthem,” Kir explained, “Hence all the not fitting in.”
“Oh,” was all Georgia could think to say to that. She assumed this to be a declaration of Kir’s own sexuality. She didn’t have anything against gay people, but had never really met any, and - like a lot of teenagers - was awkward in the face of the unfamiliar, especially that which might taint one with social exclusion.
“I do see what you mean about the words though,” he continued, “Could be a good anthem for a lot of people. Do you sing? Did you want to use the room?” he asked. He supposed she’d come here with some intention of doing something musical.
“A… a bit,” she answered. “I’m in the choir. And I like singing. And I thought maybe I’d come in here and sing something… something a bit more me.” The choir’s choice of music was fairly wizard-centric. Songs she didn’t know. She didn’t feel she particularly related to it, but she wasn’t confident enough to suggest anything else. She couldn’t see her kinds of choices winning a popular vote…
“You want to sing this with me?” Kir asked.
“Sure,” she smiled, and as she did so, a spare copy of the music and lyrics materialised on top of the piano.
After a few practises with Kir giving her the melody, she felt she was getting it. And it felt pretty good to belt out.
I am what I am I don't want praise, I don't want pity I bang my own drum Some think it's noise, I think it's pretty.
