Contrary to some legends which had sprung up from his career as an educator, there were things John Fawcett was not good at, and remembering faces was one of them. It was the major reason why, though he might become less formal about it later in the year, or with the Advanced or Intermediate classes, he always meticulously called roll during the first weeks of a new Beginner’s class, so he could learn each of the new first years from the others. It was not even as easy a task as it had been when he began subbing at Sonora, but he could still usually get them all down within two weeks.
The new Aladrens, though, were a bit different. He had to commit their faces to at least his temporary memory long enough to collect them from the Feast and convey them to the common room. So he did, and after a fine meal and some genial enough conversation with his coworkers, he went about the collection process, stepping up for his once Amelia called for hers.
“First year Aladrens!” he called out, mildly pleased to notice that he was at least an easy figure to make out in the crowd. Standing sideways in a doorway, he would have been easy enough to overlook, particularly if the room behind him did not have its lights on to pick out his dark blue robes, but he was very tall and had a reasonably carrying voice. “First year Aladrens, gather here, thank you….”
Once he did a head count, had the right number, and was reasonably sure he recognized the faces, he spoke to them all again. “Very good. I am Professor John Fawcett, the Head of Aladren House. If you did not turn blue after you drank the Sorting potion, you should find your Head of House.” He gave them a moment, but no one left. “Very good,” he repeated. “Now, follow me and I will show you to our common room.”
