Friends that skate together.... (Georgia/Kellen) by Farrah Welsh

At the start of the year, Farrah had discussed with Kellen the idea of her inviting both him and Georgia to ice skate with her. She knew that Kellen was terrified of the water and even though he said that he was going to attempt to get over it, she was not naive enough to believe that it was as easy as he was making it sound. She appreciated any effort that he was going to put into it, but she wanted him to do it for himself and not for her. Until that happened though, she wanted to minimize his anxiety while still being able to spend time with him, so she was going to do the route of the ice rink, which he said he could handle better than a pond.

She had originally thought about having them get together just before they went off to Christmas, but so much was going on then that she had sort of forgotten about it and then the holidays had passed. Now spring on upon them, she wondered if it would be weird to ask them to go ice skating with her? But with their exams coming up and all the pressure with the Fair, Farrah thought that just having a couple of hours of skating and then going to get hot cocoa would just make things feel less stuffy and stressful. Plus, she just felt like all her extracurriculars and her study time was really cutting into her time with her friends.

She had spoken to each of the earlier that week saying that she booked the MARS sports room for some ice skating fun. She was bringing snacks and hot cocoa for them to have afterwards. She had tested the water room but it had only provided the rink and no skates. The sports room, however, provided all sorts of equipment as well as the rink. It wasn’t as pretty, but they could still skate and have fun and that was the whole point of it. She thought about inviting others too, but Farrah wasn’t sure who she was really friends with rather than just friendly with. There were difference and something she was steadily beginning to understand. She tried to be more open and friendly towards people, but it didn’t really seem to pull people towards really wanting to me anymore of her friend then they currently were.

Oh well, at least she was trying, which is more than what she would have done back home.

Farrah had walked down to the MARS room with Kellen to meet Georgia for their afternoon of fun. She entered the room first because she didn’t want the room being confused with what she was looking for and smiled when the results were exactly as she wanted. “This is perfect!” Farrah exclaimed to Kellen as she pulled him in. She placed her bag on the ground and her skates on a bench. The hot cocoa was in a couple of thermoses that she had in a cooler in the bag along with the snacks. “Once Georgia gets here, we can get on the ice. You’re okay with this? If not, you don’t have to go out there.”

Fall on their butts together? by Kellen Mormont

After some Tai chi and a little bit of meditation that morning, Kellen was ready to ice skate. He still was determined to be able to skate on Farrah’s pond with her next term, but for now, he was grateful that she’d opted for the vastly less horrifying version. Ice skating rinks only held a little bit of water before they were frozen, and you could see through it. Ponds, or any of body of water, were unreliable and filled with who knows what kind of aquatic life. Farrah taking his anxieties into consideration when planning this outing meant a lot to him, he just wasn’t sure how to express that to her.

He’d made sure to wear the scarf she’d given him for Christmas. He really did like it, but he hoped that maybe by wearing it, it’d help show her that he really appreciated her. He could also be overthinking it. Did girls notice subtle things like that?

Kellen was glad to see the rink when he was lead into the sports room by Farrah. Not that he’d doubted her, but anxiety often made one worry about things for no good reason. Even better, she seemed pleased with the setup, which was important to him, since she was sacrificing so much to make sure he was comfortable. He went to collect a pair of skates while Farrah set her stuff down on the bench, and then sat beside her as he tried them on.

He smiled at her question and looked up at her a he tied up his skates. “Yeah, of course. I’m good. I promise. I appreciate the invitation, and the lack of pond. This’ll be fun, assuming I don’t completely embarrass myself with my amazing lack of skills.”

I was thinking the same thing by Georgia

Georgia was excited about their ice skating plans. She had been ice-skating exactly once in her whole life, for someone’s birthday. It had been an hour of nervously clinging to the side and awkwardly shuffling her way around. But Farrah could actually skate properly, doing twirls and all kinds. Georgia knew deep down that it was probably pretty unrealistic to expect to do the same, because Farrah had been practising for years and years, but she still pictured them spinning around the ice together. It would be fun to be able to do that. To start with though, she’d settle for being able to stay upright. She was optimistic that with Farrah’s tuition, she could do this.

She was relieved when she arrived to find that they were skating on a rink. Farrah had said to meet in the sports room rather than the water room so they could use equipment, but Georgia hadn’t really thought that through more than assuming it to mean they all got skates. When she’d first seen Farrah, she’d been spinning around on a frozen pond, which was very pretty but didn’t exactly have an edge to hold on to… The rink seemed much safer for absolute beginners, and - not knowing Kellen well enough to know his fear of water - she assumed that was why Farrah had chosen it.

She joined the other two on the benches, finding some skates that fit. Like Kellen, she was wearing the scarf-hat combo that Farrah had given her for Christmas, along with pink leggings over which she had a loose, short blue skirt, and a paler pink hoodie. She tentatively stood up on the blades, wobbling slightly and taking a few bandy-legged and awkward steps.

“Right, so… How do we do this properly? Or at least without falling spectacularly on our butts?” she asked with a laugh. She could hardly even stand on dry land! She thought it might be a while before she was pulling off spins and twirls...

No Sillies, have fun together! by Farrah

Farrah was relieved to hear that Kellen was alright with the set up. She wanted him to feel comfortable and confident while they had fun together. She didn't have much time to really to respond though because Georgia joined them. Farrah smiled widely at her Teppenpaw friend. "Oh, I knew that would look cute on you!" She exclaimed when she saw that Georgia was wearing her Christmas gift.

Farrah's matching scarf to Kellen's was in her bag along with her pair of gloves and a sweater. She was currently wearing an extra long green long sleeved T-shirt over a pair of black leggings. The sweater was grey and would work with the green dragon scarf.

She was just finishing lacing up her skates when Georgia's question had her pause. "Oh..." She knew they weren't ice skaters like her but she wasn't sure if she could teach them how to balance on the ice. Luckily she spotted the equipment that actually did help with that. Standing, Farrah trekked without difficulty to these items that looked a bit like a walker that the elderly used.

"These help with balance for beginners." Farrah announced. "The trick it to not put all of your weight onto them because that will just push them out from her and make it more difficult." Farrah explained. "You keep your weight on feet and use this to find your balance. I know it sounds hard, but it gets easier." Farrah said giving them a smile.

Coming back over to the bench, she pulled her sweater on and wrapped her scarf around her. "See, twins." She commented to Kellen. "If you don't think those will work out, I can hold hands with you and try to help you get your balance?" She offered to the both of them. "Are you guys ready to head out there?"

As you wish by Kellen

Kellen was happy to see Georgia. Granted, she was still a bit of an unknown as they'd never really spent time together without Farrah, but be liked her all the same. He wasn't sure what to do with himself when Farrah commented on how cute her Christmas gift looked on her. He didn't disagree, so he smiled, nodded in agreement, and turned his attention back to his laces before the blush appeared on his face. He'd never really considered Georgia before, but it has hard not to notice her after she was pointed out like that. There weren't many similarities between the two as far as looks went, so it was interesting to Kellen that he'd reacted the way he had--stupid hormones.

After spending an inordinate amount of time on his laces and refocusing on his friends, Kellen stood up slowly, trying to find his balance. “I should have thought to master the cushioning charm before this.” He said with a smile, holding his arms out to try and steady himself. As Farrah explained to them about the walker looking thing, Kellen was suddenly grateful that it was just the three of them. Maybe it wouldn't be so embarrassing to use it since he was just with his friends. Cute friends. Lady friends.

“I think I'll try the age old method of hanging onto the wall first. Not that I'm against holding your hand, but I just know I'll bring us both down if I don't give myself a minute to find my sea legs.” He replied as Farrah returned to the bench near where he was standing. Kellen broke into a smile when she showed him her matching scarf. “Wonder twins!” He said, a little too enthusiastically, causing him to lose his balance for a second. He recovered somehow, and chuckled a little when asked of he was ready to hit the ice.

“As ready as I'm likely to get.” Kellen said, rather straight faced as he turned his attention to trying not to fall over. Carefully, step by tiny slow step, he made his way to the rink’s entrance.

Awkward, awkward fun by Georgia

“Thank you,” Georgia smiled, when Farrah mentioned how cute the scarf looked on her. She wasn’t very used to receiving compliments from anyone who wasn’t her mom or dad, who she had always been kind of convinced were just lying to make her feel better anyway. She was too busy being a bit surprised and blushing herself to notice Kellen’s sudden interest in his laces. Even if she had done, she would have attributed it to Farrah’s presence rather than anything to do with her. Whilst she had more going on in certain areas than other girls her age, she definitely didn’t consider the possibility that any guys would look at her like that. The fact that her body had hit certain… milestones ahead of her classmates was more of an acute embarrassment than anything else. She bet no one else in her year had had to go bra shopping with their mom during the holidays, or talk about other, really gross aspects of growing up.

“It’s a time-honoured tradition,” she smiled at Kellen, as he said he’d choose the gripping-the-barrier method, kind of glad that he hadn’t opted for holding hands with Farrah as that would definitely have made it seem like a date that she was third-wheeling on. “And my usual method too. But I’ll give one of those walky things a go,” she added.

She pushed one of the metal frames onto the ice, and then stepped out after it. It definitely was easy to keep her balance, as she was just holding on, like Kellen, only in slightly more open space. She didn’t think there was too much risk of her making it slide away from her either, as it was actually surprisingly heavy. She pushed off, trying to make her feet glide a bit rather than just clomping across the ice. The frame shuddered and grudgingly moved an inch or two. She wasn’t sure whether it just wasn’t that mobile, or whether she just wasn’t getting the pushing action right with her feet. She shuffled forward a few hard-won steps.

“Well, at least I’m not flat on my backside yet,” she smiled. “Now, how do make it so that I’m actually moving like something more capable than a wounded hippo?” she asked with a laugh.

OOC - based somewhat on my own experience of using a very stylish penguin balancing aid and finding it surprisingly heavy and cumbersome.
