Breakfast in bed sounds so nice by Jessica Applerose

Jessica was finally back on campus after an extended summer break. Not by her choice, of course. It had been the worst summer ever. Waverly had pretty much wanted to cry the whole time. Her parents had gotten into a severe car accident when they were trying to learn how to drive a muggle car on the freeway. They were so dumb sometimes! They had been taken to a muggle hospital, and were being treated. No one came to visit, of course, and Jess, being a minor, was taken to England to stay with her extended family. It had been horrible being away from her parents. She had even sent letters to Darla and Tom, her siblings, but they hadn't responded. Too busy with their own lives, she suspected.

She had stayed with her grandmother and her aunt and her aunt's husband who lived in the Applerose manor with Grandmother. She'd learned that she had a cousin who was her age, but Jess had been too worried about home and her parents to care. Even Grandmother had been worried. Jess's father was still her son, even if he had been disowned. Jess was glad at least her Grandmother seemed to have a soul. It hadn't seemed like any relative outside her parents had a soul for a very long time.

Though she had met so many Appleroses that she hadn't even known existed, Jessica was still missing home terribly. She had missed her friends. She missed Reggie and Maddie, the boy-next-door who suddenly became cute during that first half of Jess's summer, even Ben whom she hadn't talked to in forever. She missed the people in America, her home. This wasn't the first time she had wished that at least one of her parents was a muggle-born. Then they wouldn't have gotten into a car accident.

Jessica didn't want to think about it anymore. She wanted to stop being such a sob all the time. Now she was back at school and she had a lot to catch up on. She walked into Cascade Hall, wanting something to do, something to chew on while she contemplated her year. She wasn't exactly sure how she was going to catch up on her studies since she had already missed a good chunk of the fall term, but she had to manage. She sat down at put some breakfast food on her plate, and ate a biscuit, in thought.

Someone joined her, breaking her out of her reverie, and she smiled. She hadn't talked to people from Sonora in so long, besides her roommates, and she had to get back to her social self even when she wanted to crawl back into bed. Or go home. She was a third-year for goodness sakes! Jessica brushed the brown curly hair that was currently getting into her food over her shoulder.

"Hi," she greeted weakly. "It's pretty early to be up to get breakfast, don't you think? I thought I'd be the only one willing to get up at 7 on a Saturday to get pancakes." She smiled. She hadn't been very willing, per say, more like she couldn't sleep.

It would have been wonderful... by Addison Thornton

Addison had been woken up to her older sister's tears on her face as she stood over her. The redhead blinked in surprise and a fear overtook her such as she never knew before. Sure, the girl was fearful on many occasions, but this one was worst of all...

Addi got up and walked her older sister back down to the Common Room before she woke up her sleeping roommates. They had been up really late the night before, just talking. It felt good to her to have had the girl time the night before. She knew she needed it. "Arista..." she said as they reached the couches. "What's the matter?" Now the slightly younger Thornton girl's heart was beating so fast she wasn't sure what to do about it. She suddenly realized what Ris was holding in her hand and she teared it out of her grip and read her sister's small scrawl. Her eyes opened wider than ever and she was speechless.

The words on the page made a black cloud appear over the heads of the two Teppenpaw sisters and as Addison looked up from the letter, she noticed that Arista had fallen asleep on the couch, tears still streaming down her face. "Uhm..." she said as she sat there for a while before sending a letter to her head of house, Lilac Crosby. Addi needed to cope with this on her own, she couldn't play Momma this time, she just couldn't do it. But Lilac could help them both, she knew it. Just as soon as she was going to go back up to her room for paper and a quill, Arista woke back up and announced with a few short words. "Going to bed." Then she got up and, leaving the letter with Addison went to bed.

Now Addison was awake and there was no denying it.

With a sigh, still in her pajamas, she went down to Cascade Hall to try to calm herself down before going to talk to Lilac. It was early, too early to wake her favorite teacher and Head of House. It was only 7am after all, she didn't even want to be up that early! The third year also knew that falling back to sleep again was not an option either, so down to Cascade Hall it was. She hoped someone else was up and she wouldn't be thinking all by herself. That could turn out super bad.

She opened the heavy doors and glanced around the room. Thankfully, Jess was in there. Though the redhead could have sworn that her roommate was in the room when she left, but shrugging, she walked over to her and sat down in the open seat. Jess smiled at her and she tried hard to smile back. Her roommate brushed her brown curly hair away from her food and spoke weakly. Addi wasn't too sure that Jess even noticed who she was talking to, but she wasn't going to press her. The third year watched and nodded to Jess. "Yea, it is pretty early..." she said, realizing that her little sister's letter was still clutched in her hand and she sighed softly.

"I didn't want to be up early either..." she started once more. "Jess? Are you okay?" she asked, as her own chin started its vibration from the mix of stress and the basic desire to keep her tears inside for once.

Alas, Fate doesn't agree by Jess

Jess was glad to recognize her roommate later on. The stress Addison seemed to be under was not missed by Jess. She had her own problems, of course, but she didn't want Addi to be be stressed by herself. Jess, being the youngest and raised as an only child, was used to wallowing in self-pity and being doted on by her parents. Addi really seemed to be going through something at least at this very moment, and Jess really wanted to help her, if she could get some venting time in return.

And Addi offered it. Jess was so grateful that someone had asked, she didn't even try to deny that anything was wrong. "It's my parents," she whispered. "I had...an awful summer. They're purebloods, you know, and they wanted to learn about muggle transportation, so they bought a car and..." She took a deep breath and stared at her food. "They got into a car accident and got hurt pretty bad, and then they were hospitalized for the entire summer and I had to spend the rest of my summer in England with some other family members I didn't even know existed." Jess shook her head. "They're going through therapy now and I really wish I could be there. I'm really glad they're okay now, but I'm still pretty shaken up from this whole thing."

Jess smiled a little at Addi. Since the accident, Jess had done some real examining of her own self and knew that she wallowed too much. She had to stop herself from doing that and going on and ong about her problems. It was going to be her crutch, her parents. She most decidedly did not want to be like her siblings who seemed to pity themselves all the time.

"It seems like I'm not the only one with worries, though," she said carefully, looking into Addi's eyes. She had noticed the letter, but didn't want to intrude without permission. "Do you want to talk about it? I can listen too, if you want, even though I do talk a lot."

Don't think I like this fate too much... by Addi

Addison sat down and looked at Jess. Her worry shone, she knew, with the wrinkles on her forehead. She knew that if she was worried that was the look on her face. The third year hated that, but it was who she was and couldn't change that. Addi knew that Jess normally wasn't this... mopey. Addi may not be known by her roommates and others there at school, but she watched her classmates and felt as if this was not normal for Jess.

Addi asked if she was okay, thinking that, like herself, Jess wouldn't really want to talk about whatever was bothering her. The red-head wanted to be there to listen if she wanted to share her troubles. But she wouldn't force it out of her either. Jess started talking and Addi listened carefully to her words, nodding in all the right places. She listened to the tale Jess spun and felt instantly bad for her. Addison was glad she'd tried to help her roommate. "I know about muggle cars." Addi started once Jess had finished her first bit and started staring at her food. Jess went on to tell her about how her parents had gotten into a really bad car accident and that they were hospitalized for the whole summer.

"Wow... I'm sorry to hear that." Addi said, knowing what it was like to be away from those she loved who were hurting or sick. That was what she was going through too, sort of. "I hope they're okay now." she added.

Jess shook her head and told Addi they were doing therapy and how she wished she could be there. "Therapy is good, it'll get them back in the swing of things faster. It will. Have faith in that. Though I know the feeling." she said softly as Jess smiled a little bit at her.

"I'm glad they're okay now." Addi said softly, thinking of the triplets, Amira and Aislynn. She didn't know what else to say to Jess to help her feel any better about what happened to her parents, nor did she know what to think about her little situation. It was that that stopped her from talking.

She heard Jess say something, but it sounded so far away. Jess is right next to me, this doesn't make any sense... she thought as her head came back down to the rest of her. She was able to hear Jess again and even though she hadn't heard the first bit of words, her roommate's second bit was heard just fine. Jess looked right into her eyes and asked if she wanted to talk about it.

A small nod was all she could manage as she handed the letter over to Jess. It was bent up in many places and folded to fit in the envelope. It also had little wet marks where tears had fallen on top of it. Some of the words were smudged, but it was all in all readable. She couldn't speak, but she sat and watched as Jess read the letter from her younger sister.

Girls-
Aislynn has been admitted to the hospital. The doctors don't like that her fever has been so high for so long. They took some tests, no results are back yet, but... A smudged spot filled the space before it went on. ...are almost sure that it is a form of childhood leukemia. She'll need constant tending, chemo, maybe even radiation. I know I sent this letter to Arista, cause she's the oldest, but all of you should know. Ris- Think of us, and pray for Aislynn. Addi- I know you're scared and worried, but Mom says it will all be okay, so please don't worry yourself into a tizzy. Mir- Aislynn says "please don't get mad and do something stupid, I love you and want you around!" Andri- I know it's weird that you're so far away, and we all miss you. Please help the others to cope better. Your ability to cope with stress is better than all of theirs combined! All- We love you all!
Love, Aubrielle

Neither do I... by Jess

Jessica was glad that Addi seemed to understand. Maybe she had been in a similar situation before? But whatever the cause, she was glad for the comfort. She really needed someone to talk to, and she was glad Addi was here when she needed her. Things were getting better, much too slowly for Jess's liking, but at least they weren't dead or anything. The next time she saw her parents, she was going to ban them from that darn car. Forever, please.

Addi was clearly going through something herself, and when she handed over the note, Jessica's blue eyes widened. When she finished the letter, she felt cold suddenly, like ice cold water had just been dumped on her. Leukemia? That was...cancer in the blood, wasn't it? Jessica's problems suddenly seemed so small compared to this. She looked at Addi sorrowfully, her eyes full of concern and sympathy. "I'm so sorry," she said, unsure of what to say to make it better. How did anyone deal with this sort of thing? Sicknesses were always hard to deal with, though she herself hadn't ever dealt with this kind of serious sickness before.

"Is she your sister? Aislynn?" she asked. "I really hope they're doing everything they can, the doctors. Is she admitted into a wizard's hospital?" Jessica knew it was probably a dumb question to ask, she being at a wizard's school and all, but her family went to muggle hospitals when they had not-so-serious injuries because it was closer. Though for all the time she had lived near a muggle community, she just didn't trust muggle hospitals with such horrible diseases. What could they do better than wizards in medicine?

"I know they've been coming up with lots of new ways to help cure cancer, or at least get rid of it for the most part. Is it...bad yet?" Jess didn't want to dim any hope Addi had for Aislynn, but Jessica knew there were miracles concerning cancer. And if it was caught early, it could be nipped in the bud much faster than if it was in a later stage. But still, cancer was scary. Really scary.

"I really hope she gets better," Jessica said, and grasped Addi's hand. She didn't know if her words would help. She was sure that everyone would say what she just did, but she wanted Addi to know she was there. That was all she could really do for now, show her support for her roommate. At least they could relate in this way. They both had something serious going on in their lives, Addi's scare starting and Jess's ending. At least here, Jess could learn to grow up and stop caring only about herself. It was sort of a wake-up call. She wasn't the only one who had problems. She had to grow up and learn to be there for others instead of expecting everyone to be there for her only.

I've never liked this fate... by Addi

Addi watched as Jess read Aubrielle’s note. Her roommate’s blue eyes widened and as she looked up to her, the red-head looked into her eyes and read nothing but sorrow inside them. The third year could guess what was going through her friends mind as she spoke. Jess said she was sorry and then asked if Aislynn was her sister. “Yes. She’s one of my little sisters.” Addi got out with choking words. Suddenly the look on Jess’ face made the whole situation worse in her head. Of course it was bad to begin with, but now it just seemed like it could be the end of the world.

“Brielle says they’re doing all they can.” she said softly to answer Jess’ next question. “I don’t know. They didn’t say where they took her.” she said even softer. How could she not know where they took her little sister? How could she not think to ask? How could they not think to tell her? Addison’s mind reeled in the thoughts as she heard Jess speak again.

“I hope they come up with something fast.” she said, mouth starting to waver. She pulled her mouth in to try to stop her mouth from making her look like she was going to cry. She didn’t want to do that. Not a bit of her wanted to cry right then. Not out there in the Hall. Maybe if she and Jess were in their room, but not out there in the open. Not with all the people there to watch her. She told herself she wasn’t going to have a meltdown right then and there. That she was going to do her best to hold out till they were back in their room later on and if Jess was still with her then maybe she could cry to her. Addi had done enough crying and there was no desire in her heart to cry more. But these were extenuating circumstances.

“I’m not sure how bad it is. But I know she’s had a high fever for a long time and if Mom brought her to the hospital she was worried. Which makes me worry even more.” she said in a whispered tone, getting quieter by the word she uttered.

Jessica said that she hoped that Aislynn got better and Addi pushed out a small smile as her hand was grasped by her blue eyed roommate. “Thanks.” she said, wondering if this was just what the pair of them needed?

She looked down into her lap, glanced towards the letter and then back to Jess. “Jess?” she asked. “Do you think that maybe we can move this to somewhere more private?” she had lost her appetite and was almost sure that her tears would erupt very soon from the corners of her eyes. She hated herself for that, but now was not the time to worry about her silent vow to stop with all the tears. This was big and bad and the third year had no idea what else to do.

Wait, we can go to Lilac… She can help both of us… Addi thought as she waited for Jess’ answer to her question of going somewhere more private.

Yeah, this fate is lame. I say we change it by Jess

Jessica realized that her questions were beginning to draw Addi close to tears, or at least making her more emotional, and she was slightly alarmed, though she made sure it didn't show on her face. She didn't want her roommate to cry! Especially in the Hall. She was almost relieved when Addi asked to move their conversation somewhere more private. Jess, who until now hadn't practiced much empathy, nodded.

"Yeah, more private would be better." She smiled a little at Addi, trying to be comforting. "You just got to trust the doctors now. Worrying isn't going to help." It wasn't a surprise to Jess that her grandmother had told her that, although in a much, much firmer tone. Grandma wasn't exactly the kindest person she knew, but she was good with words for the most part. She hoped her own words didn't make Addi burst into tears or anything.

"Where do you want to go?" she asked softly, getting up out of her seat. She didn't feel very hungry anymore. Her appetite had shrunk a little back in England, and she still hadn't been able to muster up much motivation to eat a lot. Jess wished she could be more helpful in this whole thing, but she couldn't think of anything to do. Words were words, and they only comforted a person so far. She knew that from experience.

Agreed! by Addi

Addi had been waiting for Jess to say something about her suggestion of moving their conversation somewhere more private when some tears started to form in her eyes. No. I will not cry out here. What can I do to hide this? she thought as she saw her escape. A bottle of hot sauce on the table next to a jug of water. Perfect. she reached for the jug, 'accidentally' knocking over both the jug and the bottle of hot sauce. Reaching fast (but not too fast) for a napkin, she wiped up the hot sauce and intentionally left some of it on her hand but pretended not to notice it.

“Well…” she said, clearing her throat after Jess had told her that being private would be better and that she had to trust the doctors. She nodded, to show that the red-head had understood her friend and roommate as she wiped her hand on her face to allow for the hot sauce to end up in her eye.

Where do you want to go? Jess asked just as the hot sauce got right into her eye.

“ooooo!” she said, squirming at the heat of her face from the hot sauce. Suddenly, tears were acceptable in her own mind and as she quietly flailed around for only Jess to see, she covered her eyes with one arm and with the other groped for her wand. “Oh bother…. Jess, can you get some water for me to wash my eye out?” she asked, ‘giving up’ on searching for her wand one-eyed. “I think the spell is auguamenti?” she said slowly, trying to hide the emotional breaks in her voice. “Please.” she said in a begging tone to try to override the one of terrified tears which threatened to erupt like a volcano.
