Things might remain the same for years, then change in the space of an instant. That essential truth was one of the several reasons John was glad he had not followed his mother into Crotalus. She, ever cautious, did not deal well with change, and he had missed it narrowly enough that it still slightly unnerved him to see that he was now very nearly the most senior staff member at the table after the previous year's exodus. He had become accustomed to forever being the eldest after the previous headmaster, though somewhat grayer, had proven younger, but he thought only Kiva actually predated him at the table if his time as a substitute was taken into consideration, though Erika might have obtained a full-time position before he did, he couldn't recall.
He was saved from being too unsettled by the realization that he had settled down again, though, by the Sorting ceremony, which left him with a slight, pleased smile. Aladren no longer had either the Head Boy or Girl to its name, but the previous one had been one of John's social science students, was now studying at his old university (and that, part of him thought with grim glee, to Melinda Durham!) and it seemed that Aladren had a good number of first years. That could lead to trouble once they were older and the badges started going out, he expected a headache with his third years in the next year or two, but it was always good to see more Aladrens.
As the feast broke up, he collected the little group of eleven-year-olds and favored them with a brief smile. "Good evening," he said. "I am Professor John Fawcett, Potions professor and Head of Aladren, the House you are now members of if you turned blue after drinking the Sorting potion. I will escort you to our common room - follow closely, please."
OOC: Welcome to Sonora! Part two is on the Aladren Common Room board. Feel free to continue your Feast posts, this set of posts is just to give you permission to post elsewhere on the site.
