The Head of House speech was old hat now. This was her sixth year at Sonora, and it was her sixth time providing one, so she was as comfortable in her role of Head of Crotalus House as she was in the role of Quidditch Coach. Her speech hadn't really even changed much since the first one she'd drafted and had one of the other heads check over. This year, she was changing maybe ten words total, and that included adding in the new prefect.
Even being the Deputy Headmistress, though this was only her second year as that, was familiar and comfortable. She actually enjoyed being the one to hand each of these kids the potion that turned them red; it felt more personal somehow, even though she'd done the same for the Aladrens, Teppenpaws, and Pecaris.
She certainly wasn't going to complain about the extra authority the title 'Deputy Headmistress' inspired over 'Quidditch Coach' before that. 'Quidditch Coach' had left her at the bottom end of the spectrum of Heads of House, since the other three were all full professors. Deputy Head changed that, and now she was second from the top. She might not have any ambitions toward reaching that top, but second place was nice.
Last year her first years even seemed to have gotten along with their room- and year-mates better, but she may have just been imagining that or was influenced by the silent one-sided war going on among her fourth years. She just hoped it continued to remain silent and one-sided.
With a great deal luck, this first year class would get along as well as the current second and third years seemed to. The small size of the class was promising, though she had noticed one of the girls wander off to the wrong table before Andrew pointed out the right one. One girl who tended to get lost, though, was hardly the worst she had to deal with as Head of House.
The largest issue was just that the house tended to collect two very distinct and not entirely compatible groups of people: 'proper pureblods' and 'everybody else' were the informal catch-all names she'd mentally given to the two sides. She thought this years' crop looked mostly like the first kind, so maybe she'd have peace in the year group.
"Crotali!" she called out again, in case she hadn't collected them all with her first few summons. "First year Crotalus students gather around me." The last child joined them and she thought that was all of them from her headcount during the sorting, though she double-checked that she did have the wanderer. "If any of you turned a color other than red, you're in the wrong place," she advised, but nobody left, so she figured she had the right group.
"I am Amelia Pierce," she announced, reasonably sure she had her full set of new first years, "of the Boston Pierces. I am your Head of House, Sonora's Deputy Headmistress, and the Quidditch Coach. Please follow me and I'll show you the way to our common room."
OOC: This post continues on the Crotalus board. If you wish to reply to it, you may, but it is not necessary. You may continue your conversations in the feast below. This pair of posts is just to give you permission to post elsewhere in the school.
