Peace of mind. by Joella Curtis

Joella closed her eyes as she glided softly through the water, trying to clear her mind. She hadn’t even been back at school for a week and already her head was riddled with questions, conflict and confusion. She’d needed a break from it all and had headed down to the water room in MARS one evening for a relaxing swim in the pool it provided for her. It was obvious from her stylish attire, a red plunge swimsuit, that she was not here for a serious workout - that and the fact that the room had added a hot tub which was accessible by the pool.

When she reached the other end of the pool, the sixth year pulled herself up out of the warm water and sat on the edge for a moment with her feet swinging back and forth through the warm water. She gazed distantly into the rippling blue before letting out a long sigh and pulling her feet up.

Joella lay back on the raised poolside, enjoying the feeling of the cool tiles on her bare skin, one knee raised up to the ceiling. Her fingers massaged her temples gently as though in the hopes they could physically remove that the headache of her thoughts.

She wasn’t sure how long she had lay there, immersed in her own mind, but the sound of a door closing suddenly alerted her that she must no longer be alone. Her blue eyes snapped open but the rest of her movements were much slower and more casual. Why couldn’t she lie on her back by the pool for a moment? Joella sat up and looked at the intruder with a smile. “Hi, hope you don’t mind sharing?”

The sixth year had come to the water room with the intention of being alone and she’d had that for a fair amount of time but she wasn’t ready to leave just yet, and perhaps the mere presence of another person would be a nice distraction even if they weren’t prepared to engage in conversation.
