Was it midterm already? Charlie swore she hadn't noticed any time at all pass since September. Yet it was genuinely the last evening before midterm and she was supposed to be going back to stay with her faimly for midterm. Well, that's where she assumed she was going. She hadn't really planned anything. It would be nice to see Oliver again, if he was still in Chicago - her brother had been incredibly lax at keeping in touch. Julian had always been awful at letter writing, but Charlie had heard a few times from her elder brother, how he'd finally moved out from the hotel and into a place with 'a couple of friends' as he put it. Probably the biggest bunch of losers in the state of Illinois, but that was his choice. So with Julian moved out and Oliver living with Uncle Raymond, Charlotte supposed she'd be going back to an empty home... as empty as a city hotel in the holidays could be, anyway. It felt weird to be going back there, where she was practically nobody. She hadn't even been in the main summer show because she'd been staying with Dmitry in Russia, and she'd lost touch with just about eveyone she was friends with before Sonora. Fitting in was always something that had come naturally to Charlie - going back to a place where she couldn't see how she would fit anymore was actually a bit daunting.
She'd had an idea that she hoped would make the holidays more bearable. Finishing her homework up in the library, Charlie checked in her dormitory but her roomate wasn't there, so after depositing her school bag, the fifth year headed downstairs to Cascade, where food was already on the tables. It didn't take her long to find Adelita. Despite the fact that Charlotte had grown taller than Lita since their first year, the girls still looked similar, with their dark hair, eyes, and hispanic skin tone. "Hey," Charlie said with a bright smile as she sat down next to Lita. "If i spend anymore time in the library people are going to think I'm an Aladren," she joked as she poured herself a glass of water. Man she was looking forward to eating again. A couple of years ago she started to put on weight in places she's never had weight before, and since then she'd discovered that she couldn't eat cakes and pies like she used to or she'd look like an elephant dancing on stage. At midterm she'd decided to give herself a break and eat carbs again, just for the holiday - this thought had been the only thing keeping her on the straight and narrow while she was at school.
"Anyway, I know this is super last-minute, but it's occured to me I'm going to miss sharing a room with you over midterm. While you might appreciate your own space," she grinned at Lita, "I have to insist you come stay with me at least one night. We could shop and Nutcracker if you like." Charlie had seen the Nutcracker ballet every Christmas since she was four, a fact she had told Lita many times. It seemed right she should see it with Lita at least once, as they spent so much time dancing together (in fact Charlie seemed to be eating, dancing or sleeping whenever she was with Lita these days). "You have to say yes," Charlie all but pleaded.
Adelita could not wait until she was back home in San Francisco. She missed her parents, in a weird – I’m not ready to grow up, but I’m not a child anymore – sort of way. She needed her mother’s advice and she missed her father’s annoying noogies that he gave to her every morning during the summers. She wasn’t sure why she was feeling so homesick. Maybe it was because this year seemed to be far more stressful than any year previous. CATS were a great help for that. Everyone in her year seemed to be on edge. Or, at least, that’s what it felt like. Or maybe it was only Lita who was on edge from all the potions studies she was doing that she felt like everyone else was on edge? Who knew?
Being home though, she wouldn’t have to think another minute about CATS. It was just family time. They would have a party at her Abuelos Santoro home and then another party at their GrandPapa/Mama Garcias home along with Christmas morning in their own home. The two weeks that they had would mean time together and possibly time elsewhere. They usually ended up somewhere with the Santoro side of the family (it helped that her father was an only child, so she didn’t have relatives on her other side), whether it was Spain or Mexico was yet to be determined.
Adelita grinned at her friend when Charlie took a seat beside her. It was a little strange as normally Charlie was off somewhere either with Dmitry or otherwise eating at a different time. When they did happen to eat together, there were more people around so it was like a group thing and not just the two of them thing. Maybe most people were still packing. “Is that where you have been?” Lita asked, actually curious to know. If the both of them happened to have free time together, which was a rarity, they went off and danced. Other than that, Lita had no idea where her friend was most of the time.
Adelita blinked at Charlie’s sudden request. Of the five years that they had been roommates, Charlie had never requested anything remotely like this. Sure spend a couple days during the summer together, but they were best friends and that was what friends did. But just a random night during the Christmas holiday simply because Charlie would miss her seemed a little out there. Then again, didn’t Charlie usually stay at school? Actually, now that Adelita thought about it, she had no idea what Charlie did during the holidays.
“I don’t see any reason why I can’t stay with you, or you with me if you’d like since we have plenty of room and a whole lot of family, but the Nutcracker thing my parents might not agree with. We go to that every year since I was little.” Lita said, and that was true. It was the one thing that her father really did with her when it came to dancing. He went to her recitals and everything, but taking her to the ballet was never really an option except for the Nutcracker. “But, my parents would love to see you and would be more than happy to have you along with us to see the Ballet. They take us to New York every year for it. It’s awesome.”
