It wasn't a snap decision. It was the result of several weeks of careful thought. Although she loved her job, Sadi couldn't deny that the illness had hit her pretty hard. She still had mostly good days, but there was no predicting when her bad days would arrive. These were the days when she was incapable of doing her job; even reading correspondence from the board of governors was too much effort, let alone forming replies. Sometimes she felt shame, and guilt for leaving the school and her students. But ultimately, Sadi wanted the best for Sonora, and she was no longer in a position to supply this. She would be sixty years old next year, and far too young for retirement, but she could go back to writing. She had published one book on runes before her teaching days, and she wouldn't mind returning to research. Sadi couldn't deny that the thought of spending more time at home with her husband was appealling, too.
Ideally, Sadi would like to stay on until the end of Jera's graduating year. However, that was selfish. She wasn't fit to continue running the school, and she really ought to relinquish her position at the earliest possible time. Therefore, having made her decision beyond any shadow of a doubt, Sadi called her Deputy Head Rowan Dakin to meet her in her office, in the Hall of Plants behind the Cascade Hall. Now, here was the other issue to consider. Usually, the headship of the school would pass to the Deputy. However, Sadi knew Rowan well enough to know that the politics of Headmistress were not part of her career plan. She wasn't going to make any assumptions. She wanted to talk to Rowan, and decide on the best course of action. For both of them, and the school as a whole.
"Come on in," Sadi answered the kock at her door. "Hello, Rowan," she smiled at her colleague. "Feel free to take a seat." Sadi was on a good day today, just feeling a little tired. Feeling healthy would make this easier. "I think you'll have guessed that I've decided that my health is beginning to prevent me from doing my job effectively," the Headmistress began with no preamble. "So I wanted to discuss our options with you." The first question was the most important. "Did you want to fill my role and be Headmistress when I leave?"
