John had, much to his surprise, developed a certain fondness for the beginner's class since he had come to Sonora. Despite his pronounced literary tendencies, which he supposed had been all but inevitable in the unrebellious son of a literature professor, he was at heart a man of science, and the evidence he had collected over the past few years indicated that most of even the first years were not especially destructive individuals. That he felt his Aladrens were the best about that was, of course, an absolutely unbiased opinion not based at all on his past as an Aladren and present as the head of the same.
Once he was sure the meal was over, with a mental apology to Allison for finding the soup somewhat superior to hers, he reminded himself of the number of students he was supposed to have and went to gather them up. He then made sure to count them twice. He had been a Head of House for a year, now, but the extra responsibility still brought out his inner, vaguely Crotalus-like, perfectionist. It was partially his responsibility to see that every student to come through Sonora left it a intellectually developed and useful member of society, but he felt an extra obligation to those in his House.
"Good evening," he said once he was sure he had them all, even remembering to smile warmly. "My name is Professor Fawcett, Potions teacher and head of your new House. If you will follow me - and I suggest you do, as school policy does not allow students to be out past a certain hour - I will show you to your dormitories."
