“Ouch!” Jax exclaimed for the third time, glaring down at his sister. His arms were getting tired but Gia insisted in finishing the measurements to his dress robes that afternoon so that she had plenty of time between then and the ball to complete the garment. When Gia had found out that Laila had asked Jax to go to the ball with her, she insisted on creating the best dress robes that he could own. During Midterm, Jax had insisted that he wouldn’t need any robes for the ball because he did not intend on going. Their mother spent their extra funds on a gown for Gia instead. She had bought a beautiful blue gown that she had said made her feel special. Jax couldn’t very well take any of that from her.

So, in favor of her getting her gown, Gia had promised him that she would make him look his best for the ball now that he was going. “Stop fidgeting and you won’t get stabbed.” Gia retorted, still working diligently at placing all the needles in the correct place. “I’ve worked on the mannequins and managed to make clothing without problem. You just don’t like being the mannequin.” Gia commented.

“Your mannequins couldn’t feel it every time you jabbed a needled into their leg.” Jax replied back, jumping a little when she retaliated by lightly sticking him again. They fell into silence for a moment while she finished up the last of the needle work. Jax was used to her hemming his things so he was always dealing with her needles, but she had never designed something for him and definitely nothing as extravagant as a dress robe. He knew that she would do her best to make it look decent, but he’d likely take it off after the ball started and just walk around in his dress shirt. He didn’t want to tell her that though. Gia was rather happy about being able to design something (and Jax letting her) but also very excited that they were all going to the ball.

She had mentioned reaching out to Peizhi to see if she would come with them, but Jax told her not to bother. It saddened her to know that something had happened with their friend and her brother knew about it but refused to say. Whatever it was, Jax was upset enough with it to shut down whenever Peizhi was mentioned. Whatever it was, Gia hoped that it fixed itself so that they could all be friends again. Or, if that couldn’t happen, that Peizhi was happy.

“Are you happy to be going with Chuck?” Jax asked. He knew that Gia was excited the other Pecari had asked her, but she had never mentioned liking him to any extent other than friendship. Of course, Gia had never mentioned liking anyone, so that didn’t tell him very much. Gia nodded merrily as she worked. “Are you happy to be going with him?” He asked again, trying to gage her reaction.

She paused in her work to look up at him, “Are you asking if I like him?” She asked. Jax nodded. “I do. He is very sweet and I enjoy spending time with him.” She answered with ease. She knew that Jax was looking for more of an answer, but she wasn’t sure how she would give one. Chuck was her friend, she liked him, and she enjoyed her time with him. Sammy was her friend, she adored her, and she enjoyed spending her time with her. Same for Laila and Joella. Diana made her heart jump and Barnaby made her stomach do flip flops. But were those feelings stronger than the ones she had for her friends? She wasn’t sure if she could tell. “Are you happy to be going with Laila?” Gia asked, forcing the topic onto him.

Jax was silent for a long moment and she looked up to see a rather thoughtful look on his face. She waited until he was ready to answer. Pushing him would only make him mad and shut down more. “She is pretty.” He finally said. “And I enjoy spending time with her.” He added. “But I also enjoy that time with Joella and Sammy.”

“Do they make your heart jump?”

“Sammy does when she lobs balls at my head.” Jax answered, not quite grasping the reference and causing Gia to laugh. “What?” Gia shook her head. Her brother was older than her by a year, but he still had a lot to learn.
