Medic Rocamboli

It was not that Cleo had been notably absent for the first half of term. True, she had taken off a day here and there, but Sadi had been very understanding—Stacey and Jarrett needed help; they had their own jobs to consider, and the burden of a brother with liver cancer and a mother with MS (respectively) was rather a load to bear. Teo had improved more than Cleo and Jarrett’s mother, though neither of them was thriving.

At Sonora, though, the only medical issues Cleo tried to focus on were those of the students for whom she was supposed to care for. When the Headmistress had approached her about a first aid-related activity for the third to fifth year students, Cleo had of course been enthused about it. As a medic, she believed that everyone should have the ability to take care of basic injuries, if (Merlin forbid) the need arose. The other intermediate activities—Sadi would be teaching a cooking class and May, the groundskeeper, would be instructing the students in something like orienteering—sounded interesting, and Cleo almost wished she could have looked in on them.

Once the day’s concept was introduced to the students, Cleo randomly assigned the trios to their first activities. The medic was excited for her activity. One spell she would be casting for it was one commonly used to instruct trainee Healers. It would create fake injuries on a team member—the person under the spell would not feel the “injuries”, nor would said wounds be able to become infected or leave scars. The other two team members would be inconvenienced in other ways. Each team then had to make their way through an obstacle course. None of the obstacles were especially difficult to overcome—there was a small river to cross, a wall to get each teammate over, and other such barriers—and it was certainly possible to read the end of the course.

When the students had all been assigned activities, Cleo corralled her trainees over to the area where she would be running First Aid. The witch put a quick Sonorus on herself and then addressed the young witches and wizards. “Hey, everyone!” Cleo called to the students. “I’m Medic Rocamboli—you can call me Medic Rock for short, I know my name is a mouthful. I’m sorry I don’t know all your names, but I’ll do my best if you introduce yourself.”

Cleo cleared her throat and brushed her russet hair back. She had not tied it back in a scarf today, as she usually did, and the Medic was beginning to regret this decision; her curly hair was unmanageable at best, and today was not one of Cleo’s best days in that regard. She was wearing a heliotrope peasant blouse with a floral pattern, and a pair of jeans that were rather worn-in. The thirty-nine-year-old distributed First Aid Kits—one per group—with a flick of her wand. The kits contained what one might normally expect (bandages, splits, gauze), in addition to a booklet of minor Healing spells and a few “potions”. The potions were not real, of course, just labeled vials; the water inside was enchanted and would either cancel the effects of some fake injuries or serve another purpose for the activity.

“Moving on. Now, everyone has a different role in the obstacle course. One team member will have a charm placed on him or her to simulate injuries—don’t worry, you won’t feel it at all, and there will be no lasting effects once the spell has been cancelled. Many of these injuries can be Healed using items provided in your first aid kit, but they’ll also have one major injury—like a broken leg—that cannot be Healed until the completion of the course. A second team member will be ‘blind’—they’ll be blindfolded for the duration of the course. The third team member has no injuries, but will receive a blank index card at the start of the course. Halfway through the course, your card will start to shake and the name of a disease will appear on it. You won’t experience symptoms of the disease, but the card will occasionally flash after that point and tell you if your condition has improved or worsened. Do your best to treat your teammates—some of the diseases can be cured by potions in your first aid kit, which you should apply to the index cards. If you cannot Heal your teammate, I would recommend trying to get through the course as quickly as possible after that.”

The cards had been enchanted to assign both magical and Muggle diseases, including but not limited to Vanishing Sickness, pneumonia, and Dragon Pox. For some of the diseases, the students had “potions” that could cure them. Others would just have to get their ill teammate across the course as they were.

“The group with the fastest time in getting through the obstacle course wins. If you take too long—over twenty minutes—it is possible for one or more of your teammates to—” She used air quotes, “—‘die’. Just in the game, of course. And, yes, you lose a lot of score points if you let your teammate die.” Only the injured and ill teammates could “die”; the ill teammate’s card would change to say Deceased, and the injured one would suddenly become unable to be moved by their teammates. Cleo magically distributed the cards and blindfolds, and, when they appeared ready, cast the fake injuries spell on the unaffected teammate of the first group.

“Alright—first team, go on ahead.”

[OOC: Be creative, be realistic, write long posts, etcetera. I think that’s about all I need to tell you. The course resets after every group, so you could have different obstacles. There are no animals (or, indeed, anything else especially dangerous) in the course. Have fun!]

She wasn’t really sure how to take Charlie’s explanation regarding her relationship status with Daniel Nash II. They liked one another, had somewhat of a romantic relationship, and yet, neither of them really knew where they stood? “Why don’t you just ask him?” Lita asked. It seemed like the most logical thing for her friend to do, right? Lita had no problem asking people things, even if she did come out looking dumb. “Anyway, I don’t know why you bother with them anyway. They’re all full of themselves and mean.” The last part of her statement had been mainly towards Juri, who Lita had not quite forgiven for looking up her skirt when she had asked him not to during her terrifying flight in Charms.

Lita was happy to find that the girl she had asked to join had accepted and it was Taylor Li of the Aladren house. They could work for their advantage. “I know.” Lita stated with a smile when Taylor introduced herself to them. They had been in the same class for the last two and a half years (and it was a very small class). Lita at least knew the names and faces of her year mates, even if she had never spoken to them before. Following Charlie’s lead, they walked over to where the Medic was and got their first assignment, which was the First Aid challenge.

Adelita had been some what excited about the First Aid challenge only because she actually knew a thing or two about First Aid. But after listening to the medic (was this medic new? There were so many new faces on the staff every year that if they didn’t teach Lita directly, she had no idea who they were) explained what they were doing, Lita didn’t get it at all. They had to do an obstacle course injured or sick with something? How was that learning anything about First Aid? Especially if what was provided in the kit wasn’t enough to actually heal the sick or injured?

“I really thought this one would be exactly as it stated: First Aid.” Adelita commented, clearly not at all happy about what they had to do. “I know how to heal a scratch. I know how to make Murtlap Essence. I even know how to make a sling or wrap an injured leg. Those are first aid training things that we should be learning. What is the point of this?” Lita mumbled, glancing through the kit for a moment. They pretty much had a kit that would be useless to them. The Medic had said that one person who have a major injury that couldn’t be cured by these contents, someone who was blind and everyone knew you couldn’t cure a blind person, and the third would have a disease that may or may not be cured at all through the course of the challenge.

“How are we learning First Aid when two of the team members are definitely at a disadvantage that we can’t use First Aid on and the third has a disease that we probably can’t cure with these potions? And what does an obstacle course have to do with treating first aid?” Lita voice was pitched. She was full of anxiety at this whole thing. They had to win points, but in order to win points, these had to make sense to her and they just didn’t. And this was supposed to be the one she would be good at.

Deep breath in, Lita closed her eyes and counted to ten. Her mother had taught her to do that before every recital in order to calm her nerves. It would be okay. They could totally do this. They could win this. “Okay, which one am I?” Lita asked, opening her eyes and looking to her partners.

"Why don't you just ask him?" Interesting. The thought hadn't really occurred to Charlie. Yes, she was probably the most open person she knew - being subtle or tactful were not really her strong points - but she was comfortable not knowing what was really going on with her and Daniel. It might make more sense to know, but it was hardly keeping her awake at night. She liked him and he liked her, so there was really nothing to be worrying about, in her humble opinion. But now Lita had suggested the concept of 'just ask him', Charlotte was tempted. Would it change anything? Would that matter?

Back on task, the girls headed over to where the medic was telling them about the first aid activity. Lita seemed less than impressed. "I think it'll be fun," she said, trying to encourage Adelita back into her good mood. "It's like finding out what it's like to have the illness as well as how to treat it, yeah?" she thought that's what it sounded like, anyway, especially as one of them had to be blind. Getting round the course would be made trickier by that particular handicap, and if the minor illness was a twisted ankle, or the major illness was Gwyddien's disease, they were really going to have trouble.

"I think you'd be good at doing the treating," Charlie said to Lita. "So one of us," she gestured between herself and Taylor, "needs to be blind. I don't mind either way," the brunette added with a shrug. "Do you have a prefence?" she asked Taylor.

Taylor Li (Aladren)

Taylor frowned at hearing the way the First Aid was going to be run. It sounded a lot like learning calculus before learning basic algebra. Generally, it just didn’t work, because there were no building blocks. This was how First Aid sounded to her. How was she supposed to treat, if she were treating, someone and run an obstacle course? She didn’t know a thing about First Aid so instead of concentrating on just learning the basics, she was being thrown into what seemed more like something that would be required of someone with more experience, something to add an additional challenge for them. Learning the basics without an obstacle course seemed challenging enough for her.

She was surprised at the minor disagreement in opinion on the part of the other two. Perhaps, it was silly to think, but she had just assumed that they naturally agreed on everything since to her they always seemed quite alike. Of course, she didn’t know much about them aside from they looked like they could be sisters and were both popular. Hmm, that seemed rather shallow of her. Taylor gave herself a mental shake since that was obviously her mother’s influence speaking up. Instead, she tried to be enthusiastic like Charlotte since it wouldn’t help a thing if they were all in a negative mood while trying to work on the tasks. “Yeah, and they probably added the obstacle course to make it more challenging. After all, they can’t let it be as simple as putting a band-aid on and calling it a day, right?”

When Charlotte asked her which she would prefer of the other two, meaning she really wouldn’t be learning a thing as she would just be an injured party, had to carefully decide. Being blind would mean not seeing and attempting the obstacle course without being able to, but the other option would cause some sort of hindrance that might make just feeling around look easy. Really quite a difficult decision when one thought about it. So, which did she prefer? An uneasy look was on her face as she went around and around in her head on which she would rather be. Finally, with a near sigh, she made a decision. “I suppose I’ll be the injured one. Maybe it’ll just be a broken arm,” she said hopefully.

Once she was charmed, which included having the broken arm that she had wished for along with an assortment of other minor injuries, all of which she was hoping Adelita really could heal. Otherwise, they wouldn’t do very well on the obstacle course and she really wanted to do well. It was the Aladren in her. Of course, in fairness, this wasn’t exactly an examination dealing with what she had studied in books. At least, the obstacle course part wasn’t. The healing part could be argued that it was, but that wasn’t entirely her part of the ordeal since the task seemed to be merely that she get across the course, which remained to be seen.
