"I'm just saying, I don't know if we should do the Sloth-Grip Roll in T-7," Renaye said, trying to explain to Josh. Josh looked at her incredulously before rolling his eyes.
"Are you kidding? That's the major point of the whole thing! It confuses them and throws their attention towards whatever we might be "rolling away from" rather than rolling towards the bludger. Whoever isn't taking it flies in front of the other quickly, blocking the player's view while we slam the bludg--"
"I know how it goes..." Renaye said with a sigh, "But that also throws the aim off. That's one of our least accurate ones. We would do so much better with something a little less off-balancing." Josh held up a hand. He gestured over down a few spots. Wasn't that the Crotalus captain? Renaye followed his gaze. She caught his drift right away. She rolled her green eyes at him. They weren't going to be suck-ups. That was so lame... Josh raised his eyebrows at her.
"I just want to see what we should be bringing to the table come try-outs. We're second years, so other older people know what's coming up. Renaye..." He drew out her name, "I have to do my best a try-outs. That means being prepared." Renaye heaved a huge sigh, staring up at the ceiling.
"Fine... You want to do the talking?" Josh looked back at her, expression questioning. She let out a small laugh. "That's what I thought..." Renaye led the way down the table, standing beside Jennifer. The twins were both above average height for their age, so the two of them stood a bit above the norm for second years. Renaye became aware of this as she noticed the other students milling about. Why was she suddenly nervous? She didn't get nervous when she talked to people! Maybe it was just the authority. Authority didn't really bother her normally, but this girl could crush dreams if she wanted. It was Quidditch, not Charms homework. That was the difference. Nevertheless, Renaye kept a friendly expression and a smile on her face as the twins walked up to her.
"Hi, are these spots taken?" She said, gesturing at the two seats to her left.

Despite how if might have looked to an observer, Jennifer wasn’t simply being anti-social by sitting alone at a table in Cascade and working on an ancient runes assignment. In fact, it wasn’t her choice at all. She and Lizzie had decided to use their free time to discuss a few things concerning boys (a few others as well, she supposed, but mostly the opposite gender), and the Pecari, as usual, was late. Pulling out a textbook was just a way to save time later, honestly.
However, that, in her opinion, excellent reason for studying at the table was likely not going to be good enough for any of her friends, should they stumble upon her, given her previous history of being a semi-reclusive studier. Therefore, she had planned to keep an ear open for anyone approaching, so that she could shove the book away before anyone (but most likely Lizzie) spotted it. For once, she’d managed not to be too engrossed in her work to lose focus on her surroundings, so managed to get the text properly hidden before anyone reached her.
“Took you lon-,” she began before she looked up, and only then noticed that it was two second years and not her best friend, as had been expected. Wonderful. Just what she needed—young ones believing the head girl was a loon. “Oh, sorry, thought you were someone else. No, the seats aren’t taken, though I’m waiting for someone. Is there something you need?” Perhaps it was slightly arrogant to assume that the two were sitting in her vicinity just because of her, though, given her general duties, it wasn't too much to expect.
“Oh, sorry, thought you were someone else. No, the seats aren’t taken, though I’m waiting for someone. Is there something you need?” Renaye nodded and sat down, Josh doing so next to her.
"We won't be long. I'm Renaye and this is my twin Josh. Just wondering if we could bug you about Quidditch?" Renaye smiled lightly, she didn't want to sound like a suck-up. This was Josh's idea. "This kid," she jerked a thumb at Josh, "and I want to try-out for the team as Beaters. We play on a summer league team..." Renaye dug in her bag for a second and pulled out the photo of the team, hoisting the State Champ trophy in the air. The twins and Joe stood in the middle grinning like fools. She held out the picture for a moment. "That's the team. The point is, we've had time to develop teamed manuevers and stuff like that. Are we going to be able to show you that stuff at try-outs or should we be warming up for individual training?"
Josh and Renaye could do individual training. It wasn't like it was extra difficult. The issue was, they wanted to show her that they were already set-and-ready for the team. They would do individual if that was what was going to happen, but even talking to her now let her know that they did have extra training and experience in. They were passionate about this and they wanted those spots something fierce.

Jennifer had never had to deal with much politics on her team before, thankfully. For the most part, the group as a whole had pretty much accepted her word as law, and, since most of them had been there from the beginning, there hadn’t been any difficulty with trying out new members or making decisions about who made it, so politics had been completely unnecessary.
Just because she hadn’t dealt with them, though, didn’t mean that politics were a new concept for her life. Quite the contrary, actually; so much so that she’d managed to be good at spotting them. And, unfortunately, this was definitely a political move, unconsciously or otherwise. Which was a bit unfortunate, as the kids seemed nice enough. And she supposed it wasn’t really fair to hold the politicking against them, as they might honestly not know what they were doing. And it was nice to have people who were so enthusiastic.
“That’s very impressive,” she said at last, glancing over the photo, though in the back of her mind she was trying to remember where she’d heard the names before. There was definitely something besides the sign-up sheet…It would come to her eventually. “Unfortunately, try-outs are on an individual basis, and since priority is always given to the returning team, there’s only one open beater spot on the starting team. I’m sorry. However, if you want I’m sure practice time could be found for you to work as a pair; talk to Geoffrey Spindler about that once the team’s been decided. Anything else? Sorry I don’t have better news.” She smiled at them kindly, though at the same time she was searching for Lizzie over their shoulder. If they were going to get upset about this, she wanted to have an escape, though she didn’t think it was likely they’d complain to her about it.
Josh felt his heart sink at the news of the singular spot open on the team. He did not want to compete with Renaye for it. He knew how competitive she could get, and going head-to-head for something they both loved wasn't going to be fun. Obviously, it wasn't going to get in the way of anything, but it was going to be a small sibling rivalry. He couldn't see Renaye being as upset as he would be about not making it though. And who knows? Maybe there was someone miles better than them and both would get the boot. Merlin, he hoped that didn't happen...
"Alright," he said, looking over to Renaye. Making a vocal appearance as probably a good idea at this time. "Looks like I'm kicking your butt then." Renaye's mouth dropped in mock-astonishment.
"Wow." She said simply, her face breaking into a grin not long after. Renaye turned back to Jennifer, still holding her grin. "Sad thing is, that actually worries me..."
"Just one more thing: so are you saying, even if we don't make the team, we'll be able to practice?" Renaye continued, raising her eyebrows hopefully. Renaye just wanted to play. She knew Josh was more competitive and more (admitedly) passionate about Quidditch that she was. Renaye loved her sport something fierce. She had to play, but she didn't care as much about how. Josh needed to be on a team. He was a team player. Renaye was a player. Here at Sonora, the team was the only way to play on a real team. But what if, by some freak of nature, she got a spot on the team, and Josh didn't? Honestly, did she think she deserved it more? Renaye's smile faltered. Josh wanted the spot on the team more. She just wanted to play. So... What if? Of course, she would have to respectfully inform Jennifer that she would play reserve. Give Josh her spot. She had made her decision. Man... Josh was lucky she liked him. Renaye didn't think she would need to act on this self-promise though. Josh was a pretty motivated kid.
