Pecari First Years! by Professor Connell
Another September, another group of first years. And so the cycle continued.Marian’s summer had been uneventful, with the exception of the addition of two more feline creatures to the colony she seemed to be starting, though at least the newer ones behaved themselves. The two cats had both been picked up while she had been working at St. Mungo’s in London doing research on potential healing potions. It had been an interesting experience, and she had kept the card the head of the project had offered her in case she was interested in doing it further, but she was more anxious than she had thought to get back to teaching.
There seemed to be more boys in Pecari this year than ever before, Marian noted as the first years were all given goblets and began to turn their different colors. In fact, she realized after examining more closely, it appeared that the boys might even outnumber the girls in this particular class. What difference it might make was impossible to predict, but it was an interesting trend nonetheless.
As the meal was finishing up and older students were starting to leave, she watched as two of her fellow heads of house gathered their own new pupils and left. As a rule, she preferred to wait until it was a bit quieter in the hall before attempting, but stood almost immediately upon Kiva’s exit and walked a few feet away from the staff table, closer to the door. “Pecari first years to me, please!”
Like every year, it took a few minutes for each of the new students to assemble themselves around her. Once it appeared no one else was heading her way, she counted heads quickly and came up with the same number she had calculated during the sorting. Everyone was there. “Once again, welcome to Sonora, as well as to the house of Pecari. I am Professor Connell, Pecari’s head of house. Now, if you’ll follow me, I’ll show you how to get to the common room.”
