Looking for distraction [Tag: Mr. Whitney] by Dalila Bastet

It had been one whole day since getting back from the field trip to stare at the stars in the desert. All-in-all it was a good night, but the best part was her decision about what to do about Jake. Her solution?: forget about him. And to forget about him, she needed to replace him. And for a whole day, she had daydreamed in classes about who she should get to help her forget her feelings.

Before the field trip, she had never noticed who was with who. She never really listened to gossip and generally ignored anything lovey-dovey she may have come across in the halls. So, she thought, with difficulty, what boys her age at the school wre actually single? With the exception of Jake, Whatshisface that was with Lexi and Whathisface that was with Bella, she really had no idea. Would it be wise to start asking people? That would seem desperate. Maybe just walking up to a boy andstarting a conversation would be better. Yes, that would be fine.

Satisfied with her course of action, Dalila scanned around Cascade Hall looking for a boy that seemed unattached. As it was dinnertime, the hall was rather full which meant two things: 1) there were plenty of choices and 2) that it would be hard to spot people in this kind of crowd.

After a few minutes scanning the tables, she spotted a boy about her age, eating alone. He was cute, and she recognized his face as him being in her year. Why not go for it? Dalila sighed, resolved to end her troubles with this boy and, leaving her almost untouched food (as she had other things on her mind) and sat down beside the blond boy, giving him as nice a smile as she could.

"Hi. I'm Dalila. You're a fourth year right? I remember you from class. Ummm...what's you think of the field trip?"

I'm always the distraction by Adam Whitney

Adam was still angry with Nicoletta for having tried digging into his life instead of just being respectful enough to ask him straight out. She was the one who had the secrets. She was the one already in a relationship. Adam was just her 'guy on the side' someone to keep her occupied during her months away from her 'real' boyfriend. It was something he had known right from the beginning. He wasn't good enough to be put on display for her, so he was her dirty little secret.

And he was fine with that...sort of.

But when she started trying to find out if Adam had a life outside of her, he got annoyed. He probably didn't have to get as angry as he did, but she wasn't helping the situation. So now, here he sat, alone, angry and miserable with the whole thing. He didn't know why he had gotten himself into the situation to begin with, he knew he liked Nicoletta more than he was letting on, but he also knew that, for her family, she could never go beyond the secret meetings and pretend 'tutoring'.

Adam gave a startled look when a girl sat down beside him and started talking. He didn't know why he was so startled, perhaps it was because she had never spoken to him before or because she was one of the cuter girls in his class with her dark hair and complexion. If he remembered correctly, she was on the Teppenpaw Quidditch team and her attitude alone seemed very Teppenpawish.

He smiled genuinely at Dalila and waited for her to finish before he responded. "I'm Adam, yes I'm a fourth year, and I thought the fieldtrip was alright." Adam replied truthfully. It could have been better had him and Nicoletta not gotten into a fight, but he couldn't actually admit that. "Would have been better if we didn't have to work. How about you? Have a blast?"

And with good reason by Dalila

Dalila let out the breath she hadn't realized she had been holding. Despite her outward ease and her inward determination to get over Jake, she had still thought, maybe this boy - Adam - would reject her. She didn't know him, but it would have probably hurt almost as bad as with Jake, and that was a feeling she didn't want to feel again. So, when he smiled and responded to her so nicely, Dalila visibly relaxed. This could be fun.

"Oh, I guess I didn't mind the work that much. It was easy and I like astronomy. My mom studies it in Egypt, so I just really got into it. But I still think the best part was the s'mores. It really was a blast."

Dalila smiled. This was easy. She could do this. As she looked at Adam's face, Jake's slowly faded from her mind.

For girls to forget the ones they love? by Adam

"You're mom's in Egypt?" Adam asked, surprised by the news. He shouldn't have been, there were plenty of people who were from other countries or had relatives from other countries (Nicoletta was a prime example of that), but Adam's family had never left the city in which he lived in because...well, they couldn't afford to.

"My mom's in LA." Adam responded, to be sort of funny. "More specifically Eastern Hills." Adam added. His mother was a tutor for well off families. She had chose a career that would give her flexibility as a mother, even moreso as Adam's health had staggered through the years. His father worked with the small ministry branch located in their area in the Magical Sports branch. They made little money, but got by just fine. Adam hadn't ever been bothered by that knowledge until Nicoletta came around. Now Adam didn't feel adequate enough for anything.

"Yeah, I didn't eat the s'mores. I can't eat a lot of chocolate or else I'll get sick." Adam answered, which was true enough. He wasn't much for sweets. "I'm not all that good in lessons of any kind. I can't focus well. My own fault, I get distracted easily." Adam told her with a laugh.

You read my mind by Dalila

Dalila grinned. not only did he think her mother being in Egypt was cool (some thought it weird), but he was from LA. What a coincidence.

"No way...I'm from LA too. Sylmar." She paused for a minute before going on. "You can't have chocolate? That sucks. I think I'd die if I couldn't have chocolate.

"But it's not like I'm any really good at the classes. Only astronomy. And maybe Care of Magical Creatures. I love that class. But otherwise, I tend to daydream. You should see my notes...covered in doodles." Dalila joined him in laughing.

"Maybe one day, I'll remember to show them to you. Just pages and pages covered in orange stars and eyeballs."

Yay for me being used!! by Adam

Adam was very surprised to find out that Dalila was from Los Angeles as well. Who would have thought? Was it fate? Possibly, but Adam wasn't much for fate. Considering the lashing it had given him with the last girl he had 'bumped' into, fate was the last thing he wanted on his fate.

But no brooding. Nicoletta...she was amazing...but, she was of privilege and of wealth and Adam couldn't keep up with it, he didn't understand it, and he could never be apart of it. Wasn't sure if he wanted to be apart of it.

Adam focused back on Dalila. She was talking about classes and doodles. Adam didn't draw. He wasn't very talented at much of anything...sadly. Maybe he'll find the right spot where he belong, but he wasn't too worried about it all just yet. Adam laughed. "Eyeballs?" He asked, surprised by this revelations. "That's totally creepy!" He was laughing as he said this, unsure as to how orange stars and eyeballs went hand in hand, but it was an amusing thought just the same.

"I don't really have a favorite class or anything. I don't really have much talent for stuff. But, uh, I'd like to see your doodles sometime."

Me too! by Dalila

Dalila wasn't expecting him to actually want to see thes tupid little drawings all around the edges of her notes. She forze for a moment, not exactly sure wha tdo about it. They weren't that good. At all. And she wasn't being modest; but if he really wanted to see them, who was she to refuse?

Dalila laughed with him. "Yeah, eyeballs. And I guess it could be considered creepy, except that I usually put flowers or swirls around it. You act like you've never drawn all over your notes before. I thought it was pretty normal for people to do that." Dalila shrugged.

"I'm sure you're good at something, Adam. You just haven't found it yet." She thought for a moment before adding "You're really nice. That's something, right?"

We're two crazy kids by Adam

Adam continued to smile as Dalila explained her doodles to him. She made them sound even worse with flowers and swirl lines surrounding the random eyeballs. Girls were so weird with things like that. Adam would have never thought a girl like Dalila would draw eyeballs. He pegged her for a kitten and pony type of girl.

Never judge a book by its cover, or so they say. Who 'they' were, Adam didn't know, but it was good advice just the same. He had obviously been wrong in the past when he had made judgements based on looks alone. He couldn't keep doing that.

"Oh, I doodle, just not eyeballs." Adam said, reassuring Dalila that he was, indeed, normal. "Just random scribbles. And that's only if I bother to look as though I'm writing notes at all. Otherwise, I just daydream."

Adam gave a small chuckle when Dalila said he was really 'nice'. She might have decided he was nice, but then, she didn't really know him, did she? He didn't feel very nice, but that was him brooding again. He really needed to stop that. "Yeah, I was good at Quidditch, back when I was allowed to play. But that was awhile ago. I guess I just need to start over." Adam said all this quietly, before shrugging and perking up suddenly.

"So, Miss Dalila, what do you do for fun?"

Wild and crazy kids by Dalila

Dalila was having a good time. Flirting was easy. But was she flirting? She wasn't doing it like most girls did. There was no batting of the eyelashes or laughing really ouldly at his jokes. Maybe she should do that. Or try, at the very least.

She laughed at him daydreaming and it didn't sound fake to her. But why could he play Quidditch anymore? He seemed so sad about it. She was about to ask him about it when she suddenly perked up and changed the subject back to her. it startled her for a moment and she stuttered a bit before finding her tongue and answering.

"For fun? Oh, a lot of things. I try learning new spells. You know, the ones they don't normally teach in school. I tried changing the color of my cat's fur to purple a few weeks ago. Didn't work." Dalila shrugged her shoulders.

"I also like to play basketball, but I can only play it while I'm home. One of the things I don't like about Sonora." Dalila scooted a few inches closer to Adam.

"What do you do for fun?"

Go Us! by Adam

When Dalila first stated that she liked to learn new spells for fun, Adam thought he had suddenly got her house completely wrong and that she was in Aladren instead. Seriously, who else liked to learn things? But as she continued to talk, Adam suddenly had the thought that she would fit in perfectly with the Pecaris.

He laughed at the thought of a purple colored cat walking around. "Shame, that would have been a sight to see." Adam commented. He had a rather curious look on his face when she mentioned 'basketball'. Was she a muggleborn? A halfblood? Or a Pureblood who cared nothing of the 'proper' ways?

Anyway of the above was more than okay with Adam. He had had enough of the 'proper' ways of living and girls. He was fifteen years old and all he wanted to do was have some fun. He didn't want or need the drama. "What's basketball?" Adam asked, absolutely intrigued by the idea.

She shuffled closer to him and Adam blinked at her, but didn't move away. It wasn't like they were doing anything wrong and if Princess didn't like it...well, she had her friends' shoulders to cry on. "I love Exploding Snap and exploring the gardens. I can't stay out too long or else I get winded. Er...hanging out's fun too." Adam added, having nearly wanted to say 'making out' but figured Dalila probably wouldn't want to hear something like that.

*Waves "us" flag* by Dalila

Dalila sometimes forgot that not everyone grew up in the muggle world and was downright startled when Adam asked what basketball was.

"Well, basketball is kinda like Quidditch," she started, figuring there were a few similarities between the two sports. "But it's not played on brooms, and there's only one ball, one hoop per team and five on each team." Dalila took a breath. "If that makes any sense whatsoever," Dalila shrugged.

"You know, in all my time here, I have yet to play Exploding Snap. It looks likes a blast though. Do you have a deck? Maybe you could teach me how to play if we hang out later. You see, I just combined two of your favorite things," Dalila smiled, hoping two of the things he was interested in would lead him to be interested in a third thing: her.

We have our own flag? Awesome. by Adam

Adam listened intently as Dalila explained to him what 'Basketball' was. It didn't really sound anything like Quidditch to him and he was having a hard time picturing exactly how the game was supposed to look like. All he ended up picturing was a group of people running around the pitch trying to throw a quaffle like ball into only one hoop.

Was there a Keeper? If there was, their job seemed relatively easy only having to guard on hoop. And...what were the other positions? Where there positions like a chaser or beater? What was the premise of the game? He really didn't get much from her description. "I don't really get it. How do you win the game? How do you get the ball into the hoops? Are there blockers?" Adam asked, completely curious about the game since he had never heard of it before. Or, if he had, never given it much thought before.

His blue eyes widened when Dalila mentioned she had never played Exploding Snap before. Her smile was contagious and Adam found himself smiling through his disbelief. It was odd to just hang out and have a conversation and possibly play a game. He didn't have that with Nicoletta. Not to say he didn't have fun with Nicoletta, because he always did...when they weren't fighting. "It's real fun. Let's make a deal, you teach me some things about Basketball, and we can play Exploding Snap and whatever else you'd like in return. How does that sound?"

And I'm working on a theme song as well by Dalila

Dalila laughed at all his questions. "I guess I didn't explain it all that well," she said. "Let's try this again. There are two teams - five to a team. The people have to bounce the ball across the court - that's what we call it instead of a pitch - and they try to throw the ball into the opposing team's hoop.Every time you get the ball in the basket, you get a certain number of points." Dalila took a breath and continued.

"There's really no specific 'blockers'. Each person on the team defends someone else. You win by getting the most points at the end of the time limit. Does that make more sense?"

She listened to Adam's deal with a grin. "That sounds awesome. I'm so bringing my basketball next semester. In the meantime, learning all about Exploding Snap should be fun. You wanna meet up later to play?" Dalila asked realizing as she said it, that it could be construed differently that she had meant it.

She shrugged it off and waited for Adam's answer. If he said 'yes', Dalila was going to assume that he liked her and would go from there. If not, then she'd have to find another way to drive Jake from her mind. She hoped he liked her; Adam was doing such a nice job of making Jake seem like a distant memory...

Ooo, a theme song! by Adam

Her new explanation of Basketball (though still somewhat confusing to Adam) was much better than her previous explanation. He still pictured the grassy pitch as her 'court' and had a hard time understanding why they would bounce it instead of just run with it to the hoop, but he supposed he'd have to get a book on it and read the rules of the game to get a complete understanding of it all.

"It's really not a hard game, Exploding Snap." Adam said after a moment of thought. "You can play any game with them, the only difference is is that they explode. I like to build houses out of them. I'm actually really good at that. The Exploding Snap makes it more challenging cos...well, they explode." Adam told her with amusement.

She was in Teppenpaw, so they had limited places to actually 'meet up' and play. The library was out simply because they would get yelled at for making so much racket...the Pitch was possible, except that it might be windy out and that could be problematic (and that also went along with the gardens)...which left Cascade Hall or a random corridor.

"Yeah, we can meet up. Either here or in some corner of a corridor would do just fine. We have until curfew which gives us plenty of time for a few good games." Adam said, almost sounding thoughtful as he did so. The best part of hanging out with Dalila was that he didn't have to hide it.

Dalila grinned. Her second time explaining the complications of basketball had apparently gotten through better; or, at least. he no longer had that confused look about him. What she really needed to do was bring her basketball to school and show him how to play. It's too hard to explain it with words.

Dalila listened happily as Adam explained Exploding Snap to her and wished whole-heartedly that her grandmother had allowed the game in her house. It sounded like Dalila's kind of game. And then Adam mentioned playing a few games and Dalila's smile grew wider.

"How about you go and get your deck and we can meet here and play a few games? You can teach me how to make a card house. I'm aweful at them."
