Breathing a sigh more of freedom than relief, Elly left the commons and Caedence behind and headed down to Cascade Hall, where she hoped to find Josiah. She had entrusted him with her puffskein, Custard, over midterm, as she had not been allowed to take him home. She had missed the cute ball of fluff quite considerably, and that might have had something to do with Custard being her first ever pet. Elly couldn’t even talk about Custard at home, because her mother didn’t know she’d been allowed to keep her puffskein, and outside of Sonora Elly only knew Muggles - they wouldn't even know what a puffskein was.
There were a fair few people present in the hall, but from a quick glance around for his easily identifiable red hair, Elly couldn’t spot Josiah amongst them. Intending to wait a while in case he should come down soon, Elly took a seat at the nearest table and idly started nibbling on a Brandy snap. The last time she had eaten Brandy snaps was at her Grandmother’s house last Christmas. That had been the only disadvantage of visiting Meredith over midterm: she had missed her Grandma visiting. On the plus side, though, Mere’s mother had cooked plenty of vegetarian meals, so Elly didn’t have to live on variations of pasta throughout the holidays, as was the norm since her own mother refused to cook vegetarian meals.
Elly was in a world of her own contemplating food and holidays, and so didn’t notice when someone took up the seat beside her.
Josiah’s midterm was far from unpleasant. Well, his visit with his aunt, uncle and cousin aside, plus the tux, plus his stupid family. He had gotten the Sharpshooter he had been wanting forever and was itching to try it out. He had kept Teppers and Custard with him at all times, in case something bad should happen to Custard. He didn’t think they minded being housed in his drawer; the clothes would keep them warm at least.
He had gotten everything that he took back into their proper places in his dorm. With a couple quick swipes of a comb and a robe thrown over his head, he was on his way to go eat.
It was then he noticed Elly. She seemed to be either waiting for someone or just really, really bored. He slipped into the seat by her.
“Hey there pretty lady!” He teased her, easily slipping back into the role of a flirt. “You wouldn’t have lost a pet, would you? ’Cause I found the cutest little puffskein without its mom. You couldn’t help me could you?”
With a flourish, he presented Elly with her puffskein. Custard purred loudly. Josiah smiled. The little guy seemed to miss its Elly. That was cute. But he wouldn’t admit that out loud. It wouldn’t be macho. \n
“Hey there pretty lady!” The voice startled Elly and she cricked her neck turning her head too fast to see who had spoken. She laughed when she realised it was Josiah who’d sat next to her. She was supposed to have been keeping an eye out for him. “You wouldn’t have lost a pet, would you? ’Cause I found the cutest little puffskein without its mom. You couldn’t help me could you?”
Elly squealed with delight as Josiah presented her puffskein, the pain in her neck suddenly forgotten. She picked it up immediately, and pressed the soft fuzz on her cheek, squeezing ever so lightly just to hear that cute purring sound that made Custard the most adorable thing on the planet. “Hey Custard, did you and Teppers have a good holiday?” she asked. Custard emitted a low purr in reply. “I’ll take that as a yes,” Elly said, laughing.
“Thanks, Josiah. Here, I got you this as a thank-you present.” Elly slid over the box of chocolates she’d bought (technically her mother had bought) for him. Like Caedence’s gift, the shop had wrapped it in sparkly paper and trimmings, but this time in gold and green. The contents, however, were exactly the same.
As she gave the gift to Josiah, Elly remembered the gift she’d received from him over midterm. “And er, thanks for my Christmas present, too,” she said. “But honestly you didn’t have to get me anything.” And if he did have to give her something, then a box of chocolates would probably have been more appropriate than a dress and necklace, in Elly's opinion. She certainly wasn't ungrateful though, and she didn't want Josiah to think so. Grinning widely again, she added, “You’re mad, you know that?”

Josaih laughed. Elly really did miss her pet, didn't she? If he had to let Teppers stay at home, it would be a different story. He knew his mom wouldn't feed it. But if he had to leave it with a friend, he wouldn't be that emotionally attached. Maybe it was because he had two pets already? Mentally shrugging, he was pleased to learn Elly got him a gift.
Unwrapping it, he was happy to see chocolates. He loved chocolate, plus Elly cared! "Well, I figured that since girls usually like stuff like that that you would too." He shrugged, "It was my way to thank you for helping with my club. Besides, you're a nice girl who deserved it. How did your holiday go?" He asked picking out a chocolate from the box. "Take one if you'd like." he added.

“Well, I figured that since girls usually like stuff like that that you would too,”, Josiah said. Well it was probably relatively sound reasoning, Elly guessed, but then there was the other indicator – had Josiah ever seen Elly in a dress? Or a skirt? No, of course not. That was because she detested wearing skirts and dresses. For a start they restricted movement, prevented tree climbing and the like. Secondly they tended to be all frilly and lacy or flowery, and Elly wasn’t really into fussy clothes (though admittedly the dress Josiah had given her wasn't frilly or flowery). Thirdly, short skirts always made her legs look ridiculously long and skinny, rather similar to a stork, Elly thought. The jewellery she could almost understand – Elly didn’t wear jewellery herself but she understood that most girls did – but the dress she was still puzzling over. Ah well, it was all said and done now.
“My holidays were great, thanks,” Elly said, pleased at the change in topic. “I stayed with Meredith, and Echo came too. And my Dad was home, and I went ice-skating. It was brilliant,” she said, grinning. She declined the offer of the chocolate, though, having just shared a couple with Caedence. “No thanks,” she said.
“Hey, are you going to have another charms club meeting soon? Have you got any ideas for the new term?” Elly asked. She didn’t mind helping Josiah out – he was fun to be with and usually cheerful, which were always good traits to posses. \r\n\r\n
Josiah was happy that Elly’s holidays were good. It sounded like she liked her dad a lot. It sounded a lot like his father, gone all the time. At least her dad spent time with her when he was home. Josiah scanned him memories. Most including his dad were stiff and formal. But he remembered a time when he was eight that his dad took him fishing. Just the two of them. No robes, wands, magic, or pureblooded-ness. He almost smiled at the memory. He hoped him and his dad could do that again this vacation.
“Charms club?” He asked raising an eyebrow, “Well…” he began awkwardly. He didn’t know how to tell her that he had been told by his mother to stop doing the Club because of the ‘impure’ members. Something in the back of his brain seemed to click as he thought it over. He didn’t have to do everything for the family! It wasn’t like Elly was bad, just because she wasn’t part of a well-connected family! It didn’t matter that Hyana was a Muggleborn too. He had plenty of friends, and most of the purebloods he knew were either extremely evil or just jerks.
“Well,” he repeated, “I haven’t thought about the next couple spells really. But I heard rumors that Pecari common rooms was pranked,” he gave her a wink, “By some mysterious redhead“ he finished with a laugh. He had been in the library with her when she was researching it. “I was wondering, if you could demonstrate a couple pranks you know with me. The snow charm is a good start, do you know any others? Is pranking a habit of yours?” He gave her a teasing smile.\n

Josiah looked a little uncomfortable at Elly’s mention of the charm club, and she wasn’t really sure why. As far as she could tell it had been a success so far, her own contribution aside, of course. The moment passed fairly quickly, though, and Josiah was back to his usual self.
“…I heard rumours that Pecari common room was pranked by some mysterious redhead,” he said, laughing.
“What can I say?” Elly asked, shrugging her shoulders in over exaggeration and grinning back at him. “People will make up the most ridiculous lies,” she said, her eyes shining with mischief.
“I was wondering if you could demonstrate a couple of pranks you know with me. The snow charm is a good start. Do you know any others? Is pranking a habit of yours?”
Elly had long ago gotten used the way Josiah talked very quickly about lots of things at once, and was no longer confused whenever he opened his mouth. She had to consider what he was asking for a short while, though. “Well,” she said, unaware she was mirroring his response to her last question. “I could tell you the snow one, I guess. If I told you all my pranks though, and you passed them on to the club, then everyone would know it was me and I might get into trouble,” she said, innocently blinking her large brown eyes. “And you wouldn’t want me to get into trouble, would you, Josiah?” she smiled sweetly at him.
