The picture of the twins as they entered the hall was almost the inverse of what it had been at the start of the year. It was Sorrel who strode out confidently, and Ash who lagged behind, looking simply like he was there because that was where he was meant to be. The difference was, the doubt still revolved around Sorrel. It was just Ash's, rather than her own.
The source of Sorrel's triumphant new stomp was not difficult to spot, in fact, it would have been very hard to miss it. Her feet were clad in the sorts of boots you couldn't tiptoe or slink in. You had to stride, and stomp. Whilst, when shining off glasses or the fine cutlery, the light from the hall's chandeliers had a sweet sort of twinkle, Sorrel's boots turned it into something threatening, as it shone off little studs of metal, and large steel toe caps. Her previously formidable kick now looked like it might be lethal. Several buckles on a slightly worn leather jacket, slung around her shoulders, also glinted.
The two made their way to the Pecari table and sat down, Sorrel kicking her boots up onto the chair beside her, just to be sure no one could miss them. Ash sat to her other side. His mouth was tight, and his eyes cross, but worn. It wasn't that he looked cowed by Sorrel, exactly, but - from his mouth - like he was fighting very hard not to voice a certain opinion because - from the resigned look in his eyes - it was only going to fall on deaf ears. Again. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Chrissy had had to stay over break at Sonora. Everyone she knew had gone on vacation somewhere and didn't feel like taking her. Wonderful. Not that staying at school didn't have it's advantages. She didn't have her mother on her case all break, didn't have to worry about what she ate or what she wore or how her hair was. She didn't have to worry about what people said, who was around, or homework. She was free to roam the corridors, lounge around in her pajamas, and do nothing at all.
In fact, the only person she really needed to worry about was Lily. And they were both friends and teammates and Lily didn't seem like the kind of person who would care if Chrissy's curls were perfect or if her jeans were clean. Maybe that's why they got along so long.
But now school was back on and everyone was returning. Chrissy actually had to start caring again. She sat at the Crotalus table waiting for her friends to return from their vacations. More and more people came in, but the only ones who really caught her attention were the Craven twins. Her brown eyes studied them as they moved throughout the hall. Something was nagging at the back of her mind.
She continued to watch the twins long after they had sat down at their table half way across the room. It was then that something finally connected in her brain. Turning her head for the first time in minutes, Chrissy was surprised to find that one of her friends had sat themselves next to her. "You think Sorrel is one of those girls, W.A.I.L. was talking about?" Chrissy asked. "You know, one of those girls who like girls? I mean, it's saying something when you look like you've got more testosterone in you than your own brother, right?"\n\n

Stephen was watching the doors with what could have been interpreted as anxiousness. Sure, the holidays had gone well. He'd spent some time outside in the snow, and some more time in the commons in front of the cozy fire, and even more time working on Fido, but all that had been while he was wondering. Maybe not always consciously, maybe not even willingly, as he often pushed the thoughts aside, but still wondering.
Would his first sight of Princess this term be of her smiling at him, or of her avoiding him?
That changed when the twins came in. Ash, he knew, would be ok with it, on the outside at least, but Sorrel was still... a bit difficult. Checking one last time, to be sure that Princess wasn't hot on their heels (not that he really expected it) he pushed her from his mind, again, and grinned as his friends reached the table.
"What," he asked Sorrel with a smirk, indicating the jacket and shoes "did you have to bribe Santa with to get those?" \n\n

Only if you're going to do things that earn you kicks
by The Twins
Ash, not really keen to hear this explanation, turned away. He caught sight of a girl on the Crotalus table staring at them and then talking to the girl beside her. It might just have been coincidence, but he glared at them for good measure.
"I wish Santa had brought them," Sorrel sighed, though she wasn't really irritated. She was clearly feeling too self-satisfied to be annoyed at how she'd acquired her boots. "I had to buy these," she lifted one foot a little, "with my Christmas money, and some besides. Though some good came of getting them myself." This comment prompted an indistinct noise from Ash, which earnt him a genuine glare from Sorrel. Turning back to Stephen, she seemed to bubble up with almost agitated excitement. It was obvious she'd been dying to tell someone this.
"I met my boyfriend when I went to buy them. He bought me the jacket." She didn't trouble to keep her voice down as she said this. The more people who heard, the quicker it would circulate around the school. She wanted as many people to know as possible, because it proved she wasn't ugly. "He's a biker," she told Stephen. She resisted calling him a proper one, as opposed to whatever cut-down version Stephen was, because it wasn't like he needed putting in his place. She did, however, add "He rides a Harley with a 1450ccm engine."
Behind her, Ash very distinctly rolled his eyes. \n\n

Lily was just biting into her grilled cheese sandwich, when she heard her friend speak. She looked at Chrissy in surprise, simply because the question seemed out of nowhere. Sitting around debating the sexuality of her classmates wasn't something Lily normally did. She usually assumed most people were straight, on the grounds that the majority was. Unless they did something very obviously showing they were gay. It wasn't a term people should just throw around loosely. Even if someone said it without meaning it in its real definition, someone could overhear and take it in the literal way, spread rumors about the person, ruin their lives and commit slander.
She swallowed and looked over at the Cravens. Sorrel did look like a sterotypical butch lesbian. "You know, I don't know if she actually is but she looks the part. Either that or a skinhead. I've actually never thought she liked girls much at all." A thought occured to Lily just then. "Perhaps she's a trannsexual. Like a boy trapped in girl's body, so she tries to look as boyish as possible." Not that Lily was all hung-up on looks. She was no Jordanna Howard. She could look as messy and slovenly as the next person. In fact, most of her life between the ages of seven or eight and 12 had been spent trying to look as sloppy as humanly possible. (Though she had taken showers, she didn't care to smell bad.) But still....Sorrel's appearance did lead to questions. Even if Lily didn't really have a huge problem with either lesbians or transsexuals. (Skinheads would have bothered her though.)\n\n
So I've got nothing to worry about then?

OOC: memories of yesterday's version of his post tell me it was better. Why must firefox hate me and close down mid-post? Why?!! BIC:
The smirk held its own for the beginning of Sorrel's story, but the word 'boyfriend' caused it to freeze in place. Since when did Sorrel have a boyfriend? Since when did Sorrel want a boyfriend. She was one of the guys, always had been and always would be. Except now, apparently, she wasn't. Not entirely. Did that mean she was turning even more into a girl? The smirk faded.
A biker? Well, Stephen had a motorcycle. Had had a motorcycle, anyhow, and he was getting a new one soon enough. Well, not a new one really, but another fixed up second-hand motorcycle. It wasn't like there was anything special about that. Except that having a flashy bike scored you the chicks, and doing neat stunts got them all swooning or whatever it was that chicks were supposed to do after guys. But still, whatever.
"He rides a Harley with a 1450ccm engine."
"Sweet ride," Stephen muttered indistinctly.
Big ride, his brain kicked in to remind him. What with the problems Alan had been having with his onroad licence, and in his talk about how he was going to wrangle things around to get Stephen his own either the coming summer, or the summer after that, and the magazines he had begged off Alan between his other invalid activities during the last summer - not to mention the excited talk about this bike and that that the boys had shared on their trip - Stephen knew enough about motorcycles to know that Sorrel's boyfriend was either some kid who'd nicked his dad's bike to impress chicks, or was old. Like... twenty or something. Which was kinda sleezy.
Harley's... he felt a momentary twinge of jealousy before his brain gave him another mental nudge. Sure, you could ride around looking cool and all badass on the roads, but you couldn't do a Hart Attack on one of those. Heck, you couldn't even pull off a decent enough jump to manage a Heel-clicker. Really, he comforted himself, this guy of Sorrel's didn't know what he was missing out on. Sorrel didn't know what she was missing out on, getting involved with some boring old road-bike-riding biker dude. Even if he did buy her cool leather jackets.
He managed to ressurect his grin, even if it wasn't quite so whole-hearted as before and glanced at the door. All this reminded him of Mia. He still needed to hear her answer, and he wasn't opposed to the opportunity to check her out and see if she'd managed to repeat the summer holiday's surprise and get even hotter again. Mia, who was a girl and might be his girlfriend soon, just like Sorrel was now someone's girlfriend. Weird. The smirk returned.
"So, this means you're really a girl then?" He teased, even as the thought occured to him. It was a strange reminder; Sorrel wasn't really a boy, after all. \n\n

OOC why must you write posts that are so hard for me to respond to when I'm on limited access?! :-p
IC Ash watched for Stephen's reaction, and was satisfied to see the smug, happy look vanish from his face. Not that he wanted Stephen to be miserable, but if he disapproved too, then maybe Sorrel would see sense. Or stalk off in a huff with them both and shack up with the stupid biker. He was just grateful that the perve couldn't touch her when she was at school. At least he had a few months before he really started having to worry again.
Sorrel's smug look remained at the shocked one on Stephen's face. She'd wanted people to be gobsmacked, and make a big deal of this, because it was a big deal. Although a small part of her nastily whispered that no one would be so surpised if one of the pretty girls got a boyfriend; they were amazed because someone wanted her. Or it was the bike. Stephen was just impressed by the bike, she tried to tell herself.
"I dunno," she responded awkwardly to his question, her triumph fading slightly. He wasn't going to try and push her out, was he? Just because she had a boyfriend - that was so unfair, so hypocritical. "I mean, obviously I'm a girl, but I'm not a girly girl, if that's what you mean. I just have a boyfriend now. You chase girls and you're still our mate," she added, even if it wasn't entirely true that they hadn't had any issues at all over Stephen's choice in women. "I'm still me," she added, sounding only slightly uncertain about that. \n\n
"I guess," Stephen said, slowly. "Only... well," he grinned, "With any luck this'll have tipped you just over the edge enough that Ash and I won't have to worry about you barging into our dorm at any given moment now."
He was still feeling entirely thrown by this new news. Firstly the reminder that contrary to how he usually thought of her, Sorrel was really a girl, and secondly... because... nah, he wasn't jealous. He had Mia after all. Well, probably. And if he didn't have Mia, well there were plenty of other fish in the sea and girls in Sonora.
Maybe Sorrel had a point about the girl chasing.
"Can I help it if the girls just can't resist me?" he added, leaning over to noogie Sorrel's hair. "You'd better watch out if you're really becoming a girl - even a non-girly one. You might end up another victim of my devestating charms." The grin remained in place, but something struck Stephen as wrong about that. An odd feeling in his stomach. He pushed it away.\n\n
Dunno, just a <b>Mysterious <b>Inclination <b>Arising
by The Cravens
Sorrel wriggled a little bit a Stephen messed with her hair (not messed up, as it was too short for that) but she didn't really mind. It was fun. Almost... affectionate. She would say 'brotherly', but it didn't quite seem that.
You'd better watch out if you're really becoming a girl - even a non-girly one. You might end up another victim of my devestating charms.
Sorrel felt her cheeks burning at this comment. Although she prayed and prayed that she wasn't, she was sure she must be blushing, though who knew why. Probably cos it was such a stupid thing for Stephen to say. They were mates. You didn't... do stuff with your mates, that was why. She managed to force a laugh, and muttered something like 'yeah, whatever'.
Beside them, the mug from which Ash was drinking was slammed onto the table with a resounding thud. Sorrel, her face suddenly angry, whipped around to face her twin.
"Uch, what now? I am not even 'allowed' to talk to boys I'm friends with?" she asked, with an exasperated sigh underneath the venom.
"No, no problem," Ash said. Her blushing at Stephen's comment had taken him by surprise, that was all. He was very, very happy for Sorrel and Stephen to continue getting along well. As he raised the mug back up to his lips, it just hid a very satisfied smile. \n\n

Wha- <i>ooooohhhhh...</i> I get it now.

She wasn't blushing was she?
Stephen watched in facination for a moment, before the wrong feeling connected with what he was seeing - and hearing, as she laughed and said something - and he frowned, turning away to half stand and check the door again. Still no Mia. Was she late? She really should be here. Everyone else who'd gone for the holidays seemed to be back. She needed to be here. If she was around he wouldn't be so thrown by Sorrel having a boyfriend because he'd be able to show her that he had a girlfriend. At school.
There was a loud noise from nearby, and Stephen's attention was drawn back - not that it had entirely left - to his friends. If it had been a blush before it now seemed and angry flush as Sorrel ripped into Ash.
"No, no problem."
Stephen paused a second before deciding that an abrupt change of subject was in order. His smug smirk of earlier returned. "Fido," he announced, "is the most awesome broom ever. You guys are not going to believe your eyes."\n\n
