The start of something new (tag: Charlotte) by Emrys Lucan

Emrys was nervous. Actually, nervous was an understatement. Previously, when his family attended balls together he was expected to dance with Caelia or, occasionally, go around the room a few times with the various daughters of various acquaintances of his parents and grandparents. The last two years, he had been expected to entertain the female friends of whichever witch Wesley had decided to spend his time wooing that evening. However, he had never asked a girl that he liked to dance-- mainly because there hadn’t really been any witches that he actually liked for more than just a pleasant conversation discussing the weather.

As such, he had asked Caelia while they were hanging out together over the winter break to practice with him. Though she was only ten Caelia knew exactly how it was she wanted to be asked to her first ball, how it was she wanted to be asked out on a date for the first time, and how it was that she wanted to be asked for her hand in marriage. And it was, she said quite plainly to him, in that order that she wished to be asked. Emrys had shaken his head at the time, thinking his little sister quite odd to be already thinking of those things, but now that he was preparing to meet Charlotte and ask her to the ball the conversation was making him nervous. What if Charlotte was like Caelia and had certain expectations when it came to this? And what if he didn’t meet them? Before midterm he had thought he would ask either Adam Spencer or even Leo or Rupert Princeton if he could ask Charlotte to the ball but Caelia had informed him over winter break that a move such as that would seem creepy. And he did not want to seem creepy. He’d thought it would just be polite and had explained to Caelia that asking a male relative was what would be expected during a marriage proposal so he’d thought it made sense for asking someone out as well. It had then been Caelia’s turn, choosy in what she decided to be smart in, to shake her head.

So, as per his little sister’s request, Emrys had arranged to meet with Charlotte in the MARS room under the guise of yet another music practice. He had brought his violin as a fall back, in case he chickened out over asking her to the call despite Wesley, who Caelia had written to upon Emrys’ leaving for Sonora, ordering him not to. If you do that, his usually unhelpful cousin had written. You will be tempted to just go about your daily business. If you want to go with her to the ball then you have to jump at it, make your move before somebody else does.

He was pacing back and forth before the wide window in the music room, fiddling with his fingers when Charlotte entered the room. Emrys looked up at the sound of the door closing and smiled at her nervously. “Hello,” he said. “Thank you for coming, you look very nice.” Complementing a girl’s appearance, Caelia had told him, was very important. Emrys twisted his hands some more before deciding that this asking business just needed to be over with. He was just going to be upfront about it. If Charlotte was going to reject him, he’d rather it be over as quickly as possible so he could pretend that it had never happened in the first place.

“I had a second, more pressing reason to ask you here today,” he said after giving her a chance to return his greeting. “As you know, this year the Midsummer Event for Sonora is a ball. And I was wondering if you would like to go with me.” He paused for a minute. “As my date, I mean,” he clarified.

Shall I harmonise? by Charlotte Spencer

It was nice falling back into a routine of academia even if that meant having to study for exams once again. Charlotte liked her routines and have a set timetable for everything. Her music practises with Emrys was always part of that schedule and she was glad that he had invited her to practise so early in the term. It was one of the things she liked best about coming back to school.

Her holiday had been interesting in the very least. Charlotte and Adam had attended a number of balls with their parents. Whilst Adam was responsible to find his own partners to dance with, Charlotte never had a moment alone. Several eligible wizards asked her to dance multiple numbers with them and Charlotte, being too polite to refuse, was left with sore feet and a slightly sweaty appearance. Those balls, however, had furnished her with the confidence she needed in herself. Those wizards hadn't seemed to mind her stutters or awkward silences as she danced well. It was enlightening to find that people actually liked her outside of school.

Nevertheless, Charlotte was glad that was over. It was nice in the moment to be fawned over, but it was very vexing to constantly be in the centre of attention. She made her way to the MARS room carrying her folder of music sheets in case Emrys didn't have any. They usually took turns bringing in the music to play, but it was a new term.

The music room was as lovely as ever. The beloved piano stood near the middle of the room and Charlotte made her way over to it as Emrys greeted her. "Thank you," she said, used to his compliments by now. "I got this dress for Christmas." She had left her blonde hair straight down this time in its natural state and was wearing a green dress that went past her knees. Her mum always knew how to pick the perfect dresses for her daughters, though only one of them appreciated it.

Charlotte was a little perturbed by how formal Emrys was being. They met often for music practises, but he seemed nervous this time around; this time was no different than the other practises. Unless...Charlotte blushed fiercely before he said anything else, suddenly aware of everything around her as he asked what she had hoped he would.

Why was Emrys nervous? Didn't he know that Charlotte would never say no to attending a ball with him? "Of course," she said, her cheeks pink and smiling. "Thank you for asking me," she added. "I already got my dress over the holiday. I hope that's all right." Charlotte considered Emrys her closest friend, and more than once she had admittedly thought of securing his affections as a betrothed. Her true feelings, however, were still a muddle and she didn't know how to sort through them. For now, she would be glad to receive his attention though she always worried that she was taking too much of his time and he would get bored of her. But they had been friends for a very long time by now and he was still around.

Only if you feel like it by Emrys Lucan

“It’s a lovely dress,” he said, feeling as though it was an awkward thing for him to comment on even as the words came out of his mouth. He cleared his throat though and continued on with the purpose of asking her there in the first place. To his delight, Charlotte smiled in response.

“Of course, thank you for asking me," she said. "I already got my dress over the holiday. I hope that's all right."

All the nerves that had been coiled up inside of him dissipated with that one sentence of acceptance from Charlotte and the smile on Emry’s face threatened to burst and he started laughing as he thought of his teeth jumping forth every which way should that have happened. “Yes, yes of course,” he said, doing a remarkable impression of the hero from a Jane Austen novel that Ava had once read aloud to him when describing the sort of man that she hoped to end up with. That had been a rather weird evening as Emrys, though he knew she wasn't a boy, had also never really thought of Ava as a girl and more of just a fountain of obscenely detailed knowledge about Healing and art.

Then, remembering what his sister had said about girls liking to look nice for special events, thought to ask a question he never dreamed of asking his best friend. “What color is your dress? Just so I can find something suitable to wear.” He hadn’t bought dress robes yet for two reasons, the first being he had been worried Charlotte would have turned him down in which case he planned on being too embarrassed to ask anyone else, the second being Caelia’s informing him that gentlewizards always let the witch pick out the color combination for events such as a ball.

"Oh, that reminds me. I got you a Christmas present. He turned to get the small box out of his violin case which rested on the lid of the piano and gave it to her. "You can open it now if you like, or later in your room, it's up to you." Inside the box was a simple charm bracelet that his sister had helped him to pick out. Nothing too fancy, just a bit of jewelry that Caelia had said would be acceptable to give to a friend that was a girl and as Caelia was the expert of all things proper Emrys had listened to her. The bracelet had one tiny charm on it, a little violin with an E engraved on the back. There was also a note in the box that said To my first and closest friend at Sonora, so that you'll never forget me. Thank you for your friendship.

Perhaps the note was a little somber, but given the recent situation with his grandfather Emrys had been thinking about separation from his loved ones rather a lot. In fact, he had gotten his two other close friends similar Christmas presents, a quill box for Emery and a pair of paintbrush earrings for Ava both with notes that expressed his gratitude for their friendship. "I hope you like it, my sister helped me to pick it out." Although the hardest part was no over, he was suddenly feeling rather shy and exposed. “So," he paused and licked his lips. "Would you like to play now, or perhaps you’d like to talk?” He paused rather awkwardly as he realized Charlotte might find that a weird question. “About our breaks, perhaps?” He blushed. “I’m sorry, I don’t know why I’m so nervous.”

OOC: Sorry it took so long to reply!

I do enjoy the sound of music. by Charlotte Spencer

The delight on Emrys's face made Charlotte smile in return. There was something pleasant in making someone else happy, she found, though she hadn't expected him to laugh. But it was pleasant, all of it. It felt like a dream that Charlotte never wanted to wake up from, the magic of a moment that would soon fade until the night of the ball. She could hardly wait. She would have a lovely dress and a lovely date to go with without relying on her brother to take care of her.

Emrys asked about the colour of her dress. After two weeks of incessant parties and matching with her family members, it didn't seem an odd question to ask. "It's the colour of mint. A light green." The dress went down to her feet and covered her arms. She loved the fabric, the embroidery and the conservative style. It matched her perfectly. All she needed to do was decide how to dress up her hair and make-up. Emrys had commented on how he'd liked her curls before. It might be the style to go with.

At the mention of a Christmas gift, Charlotte's eyes widened. "Oh, I...I didn't get you one. I'm sorry." She hadn't even thought of gifts during her holiday though she'd given him one last year. It was shameful, forgetting about her friend during the Christmas season, and she accepted his gift with some reluctance. "If you don't mind, I'll open it now," she said, smiling at him whilst hoping it wasn't something outlandishly expensive. The guilt was heavy enough without a price. It was a charm bracelet that warmed Charlotte's insides considerably. There was a little violin, the trademark of her dear friend, and a note included. The message made her tear up and she feared that her eye make-up would smear. "I love it, Emrys, thank you. It's lovely."

Charlotte put the bracelet back into its box and looked up to see Emrys looking nervous again. He wasn't acting like himself, but perhaps something had changed. She suddenly felt nervous herself and she knew conversation would be difficult for her when she was like this. It was painfully awkward being so shy. "It's-it's all right," she said, walking quickly to her beloved instrument. "Would you mind terribly if we played music? I brought music sheets that I'd love for us to try." She held his part out to him, smiling a little to attempt to dissolve the awkward atmosphere. It felt as though they were on the brink of something, of crossing some line, but what was on the other side, she wasn't sure.

OOC: Equally sorry for the wait!
