Roommate thread! (Bella,Christabel,Bee)
by Sophia Priory
Sophia was pleased to finally be at school and pleased to be sorted into Aladren. So far. She had yet to meet any of her roommates, having spent the feast talking to a second year girl named Topaz who was a distant cousin of hers. They had spent the time talking about the curriculum at Sonora for the most part, though the second year was chock full of roommate horror stories as well. While Sophia had enjoyed having an intelligent conversation, she couldn't help but feel like she was being tested somehow and suspected the hand of Caitlin Pierce somewhere in there. She knew all about their exclusive club.
Still, it was nice to basically be in a house where she didn't have to worry about being so and so's sister or cousin and could just be her own person. Topaz and her older sister were distant enough that people probably wouldn't automatically associate her with them
However, there was still the roommate thing. That could go wrong in so many horrible ways. They could be an intellectual snob, which was the most likely thing in Aladren. They could be a spoiled brat. Or they could be self-righteous and judgemental like Topaz's roommate. They could be the overly ambitious type who'd step on anyone to get what they want-also quite possible in Aladren. Or they could be bullies. Or something she hadn't thought of.
She followed Professor Taransay to the Aladren commons with three other girls. Sophia looked at them warily but kept a polite smile on her face lest she be the one others thought badly of.
Sophia listened to Professor Taransay's introduction, noting that one of the prefects was Topaz's sister-which she would have figured out even had Topaz not said anything. The name Layne sounded familiar too. Aunt Hope had been friends with one of them and she thought there was one in Uncle Adam's year too.
Now though, Professor Taransay had finished his spiel and it was time to face the music. Sophia trudged upstairs to what would be her room and looked at the girls would be sharing it. She introduced herself. "I'm Sophia Priory of the Wisconsin Priorys." That was the way she had had it drilled into her head to introduce herself and she didn't know who the other girls were just by looking at them, so they could be society people. However, she was doing her best to smile and there was no trace of self importance in her tone, just the sounds of someone doing something they'd been taught to do.
Christabel turned to look at Sophia. At first glance, her introduction sounded like the kind of thing she would have expected from someone who was pureblood and proud of it, but that wasn't quite right- the words seemed the same, but the tone was all wrong. It sounded rehearsed, as though Sophia had been told that she should introduce herself to people that way rather than following her own instincts. Christabel thought that maybe her new roommate was just shy and reverting to formal manners so as not to offend anyone on their first day. Well, there was only one way to find out: she was going to have to start a conversation.
She still had some doubts, though; what if the Wisconsin Priorys were really important? She might make a fool of herself if she make it obvious that she didn't know. On the other hand, it was the first day of school, and it seemed likely that there would be lots of people who didn't know anything. Besides, it wasn't really in Christabel's nature to hold back from asking questions.
"Hi," she said. "I'm Christabel. You're the first person I've met from Wisconsin- is your family well-known there? It sure sounds like it." Christabel smiled a little. "I hope that doesn't sound rude. I come from a town with pretty much no other wizarding families except mine, so I don't really know anyone at all yet. I figure it's better to ask right away than to just pretend like I know stuff, right?"
Sophia was relieved when Christabel wasn't rude and automatically assume she was stuck-up because she was a member of pureblood society. The Aladren introduced herself the way she had because she was the first one to speak up and she didn't know who the others were and it was best to use the formal greeting and risk non-society people thinking she was self-important then it was to just introduce herself as Sophia and have society people think poorly of her manners and her as a whole.
"It's nice to meet you, Christabel." She replied, pausing to consider her roommate's question. "I suppose we are fairly well known." Sophia didn't want to say important. That sounded...bad. It was true, otherwise there would have been no way Clifford Brockert's great-granddaughter would have been allowed to marry into the Priory family. "Where are you from?" Since Sophia had relatives all over, Christabel might very well be from the same state as them. Even though she wouldn't know them.
She did figure that Chrtistabel must live in a pretty small town though. Bridget's mother had grown up in a very small town where she and her mother and later her great-aunt and half-sisters were the only witches in town. Harmony had suffered very much for it and people hadn't even known about the magical part. However, she'd been poor, sickly, and illegitimate. On the other hand, most cities had very diverse populations and no matter who you were, you could find others like you. Pretty much any city of a decent size had a magical community. It made Sophia extremely grateful to live in Madison.
Not that the first year held that against her roommate in the slightest. That would be a silly thing to look down on someone for. Sophia usually only looked down on people for character flaws such as being spoiled-even though her sister was and Sophia did love Lydia for all that she was annoying, but that trait in others who weren't her sister produced a visceral reaction in her-arrogant or a bully, to name a few.
"Wow, that must be rough." She sympathized. It was probably hard to be different. Not that Sophia ever really had been. Most of her challenges came from the fact that her sister got all the attention and having to cater to her instead. Of course, she didn't know the make-up of her class yet so she very well might end up being the odd one out. She hoped not though at least she would still have Bridget.
And hopefully, she'd make friends with her roommates as well.
"It's not so bad." Christabel shrugged. "I come from a little town in West Virginia- it's not really big enough to have a lot of wizarding folks, but we live near uh..." She hesitated for a moment, trying to find the right words. How much did everyone else in the room know about the Muggle world? And Christabel wasn't entirely sure she knew enough to explain things properly anyway. She'd just have to do her best.
"We live in an area where the Muggles do science that means they're not allowed to use much of their other technology. It means my dad and I don't stand out too much by not using it, so nobody really notices we're any different."
Christabel wondered whether to share a little more about her life back home; she figured it was a good idea, since it might help her to make friends if they were able to make conversation early on.
"It sure was difficult trying not to do magic though. You know how it is sometimes, when you get really mad or excited and it all kind of just... comes out?" She grinned. "I think some of the other kids in the Muggle school I went to noticed something weird. It's nice to finally be with other kids who get it."
