[Norman] was deep in thought when he felt the couch dip down beside him. He looked up to see the one person at Sonora who didn’t seem to have a problem with him and who didn’t seem to drive him completely crazy. And suddenly he knew exactly what it would take to crash the Donovans’ karaoke party. If [Norman] was a different kind of person, he might have felt bad about using his blind friend to keep from being kicked out of a party at which he “knew” he was not wanted. Yet he was not, and as such really only thought about people in terms of how they were of value to him.
“Hey, Nevaeh,” he began, smiling as the idea took further form in his head. “Do you have anything to do this afternoon?”
“Oh, hey, [Norman],” Nevaeh returned, trying her best not to sound too surprised that she had managed to find a place next to a friend. Maybe Scout had led her to this couch in particular because he recognized [Norman] as someone she knew and was friends with. “I don’t think I’m doing anything,” she reported, scanning her memory for any pre-arranged plans. “I probably have a little homework I should be working on, but I definitely don’t mind putting it off. Why? What’s up?”
“My roommate’s having a karaoke thing, I thought it would be fun to go,” he said, not untruthfully. [Norman] didn’t karaoke. [Norman] did, however, crash the Donovans’ mood whenever he could. “And maybe you would like to join me?” Nevaeh was key to his plan. The Donovans and Co. would never dare kick a little blind girl out of their party, they would never be that cruel. They were those sorts of people and that’s exactly what [Norman] was counting on.
Nevaeh grinned. “That sounds like fun!” She wasn’t sure if there would be a way, even with magic to accommodate her, which meant if she were to participate it would have to be a song she knew very well, but even just going and hanging out with [Norman] and his friends would be awesome. She was only a second year, so being invited to hang out with a bunch of fourth years made her feel cool. “Yeah, I’ll come!”
“Great,” [Norman] said with a smile, wondering--not for the first time, if Nevaeh’s dog had something wrong with it. Weren’t dogs supposed to be great indicators of people? [Norman] wasn’t an idiot. He knew--now more than ever after the summer he’d had, that his family (his dearest brother aside) were not on the right side of the law, the right side of...well, anything really, and he also knew that they were destined to continue down that path whether they wanted to or not--perhaps Alfie had evaded his fate for a few years, but it would catch up to him sooner or later. Of that, [Norman] was certain. So why was it that Scout didn’t seem to have a problem with him? He reached out and gave Scout a reassuring pat just to make sure.
“It’s after dinner, at seven,” he elaborated. “There’s supposed to be desserts there too, but eating dinner before seven is early so I was thinking about coming a little late. I don’t suppose you mind that? Otherwise we can eat dinner earlier if that’s what you want?”
“That’d be fine,” Nevaeh answered cheerily. This was awesome! Not only was she going to go to a fourth year party, but [Norman] was specifically inviting her to eat dinner with him. This was, like, the best day ever, and term was only just beginning. At this rate, she was already setting up to have a great school year. “I’m okay with being a little late.”
