An Owl for Leonidas Bennett by Stan

After dropping his first letter off, Stan made his way to the Aladren dorm. He enjoyed the stillness of the air and the common room while the students were enjoying their feast. He popped into the dorm room, pleased at his progress, and dropped the next letter off onto the proper desk, this one addressed to Mr. Leonidas Bennett, before departing again.

Captain Leonidas Bennett,

Congratulations on your promotion to Quidditch Captain! This year you will be responsible for putting up sign-up sheets, holding tryouts, reserving the pitch for your team, and hosting practices throughout the year. You will, of course, have the help of an assistant captain. I would recommend Clark Dill.

If you would rather have another assist you or don't feel you can perform these duties as captain, please owl me so I can make the proper arrangements before the season begins. You may tell your assistant of choice or their promotion yourself. Congratulations and best wishes.

Owling Clark by Leonidas Bennett

The letter was not in itself a surprise, but finding it on his desk when he got back from the Opening Feast was. He almost missed it because he was sleepy after eating a little too much rich food at the feast, but he did get to look surprised for a second before he opened it and quickly read its contents, which were as expected: he was captain and Clark had been nominated to be his assistant.

That wasn’t a surprise, either. Clark was the only choice. The captain’s badge almost always passed to the next eldest. Even the staff, in their heart of hearts, had to know that John was most likely the only member of the team who would follow Clark, but what else were they supposed to do? Give it to Jack Spencer and not only have every pro-Muggle organization in the country descend on their heads, but also cause the Aladren Quidditch team to collapse now instead of two years from now? If Clark was passed over, then he, probably with John right behind him, would almost certainly either quit the team altogether because of his sudden deep need to devote himself entirely to his CATS or else deliberately play like he had a broken arm while talking loudly in public places about how brilliant Leonidas Bennett’s and Jack’s leadership was. That was, after all, exactly what Leonidas would do in Clark’s position, so it would be foolish to expect Clark to do better.

The situation wasn’t unmanageable. The whole team knew they had to treat Clark and John well enough to keep them around just to make numbers, so as long as he downplayed Clark's position as far as possible and kept the mentoring part of their new relationship as private as possible – easy to do when Clark was the Seeker and Leonidas the Seeker’s Beater – Leo thought they’d be all right. Everything would probably collapse as soon as Clark became captain, but that, frankly, wasn’t Leo’s problem.

The next morning, he got up earlier than usual to post signups before breakfast and send Clark an owl congratulating him fairly warmly on his nomination and asking if he wished to accept it. Then he went to breakfast to get some coffee and try to figure out where he should look for a warm body to fill the void left by their best Chaser if no unexpected prodigies presented themselves willingly.
