Portia Dobson

This year, Portia was making a change to the fashion club, the location. It had been nice of Professor Chambers to let her use the Muggle Studies room, she had to admit the woman was a kind person and she appreciated it. However, she didn't want to scare away any of the right people who wanted to join. In fact, Portia hadn't been all that thrilled to set foot in the Muggle Studies room herself, she just didn't want to hurt the Professor's feelings.

So instead, Portia had decided to hold it in the Art room. Fashion and art sort of went together, especially designing clothing. Plus, it took a good eye for color and style to pick the right clothing. The Teppenpaw considered her own clothing to be very elegant, yet fashionable. She made her best efforts to keep up with the latest trends while still maintaining an air of class. Something that she felt some others didn't really have though Portia didn't want to be rude about it. She needed to find a tactful way of helping those people.

As she'd moved the location of the meeting to the Art room, she wanted to try something new this year. She wanted them to design and sketch their own clothing. Portia liked to do that in her spare time, though she never expected to sell them. It wouldn't be proper for her to do so and what she really wanted to do was marry well, preferably to an up and coming politician. Not that Portia was that interested in politics themselves, but she'd grown up around it, and she loved the lifestyle.

However, she might design her own clothing. One of a kind pieces that nobody else would have. The second year would have to find hobbies to do while her husband was dealing with the day to day business of politics. Merlin only knew what some women such as her mother and Hope did all day. Of course, Portia didn't know exactly what politicians and business men did either. That was men's work and she had no need to do so.

She sat primly in a chair, waiting for others to arrive. Once she was sure everyone who was going to be there had shown up, though certainly more people could come if they wanted, the second year stood up. "Hello everyone. Welcome to Fashion Club. Today, I've come up with kind of a neat activity. We're going to be designing our own clothing." Portia hoped that everyone else thought it would be as fun as she did. "Also, if anyone has ideas for future meetings, please don't be afraid to suggest them."

OOC-Okay, this is not the first meeting of the Fashion Club this year, though its the first one I've posted. Assume people know each other unless someone decided to come who wasn't here before.

Virginia was a fan of fashion. She really was. She loved looking through magazines or going shopping with her mother. It was a fun pastime for her and one she felt that most females felt the same way. Some may not like to think that they did, but every girl felt special in that pretty dress with their hair done nicely. Every girl. Ginny would never believe them if they said otherwise. They were just playing hard to get. That was all. How could someone not like to look pretty and feel pretty? That was just nonsense.

However, as much as she loved shopping with her mother, she never loved how her mother always used her as a doll. Ginny grew up being something that her mother could do what she wanted to. She dressed her up in whatever she thought would make her little girl look like a porcelain doll. It had become so frustrating as Ginny had grown older. If her father hadn’t stepped in and said that Ginny was old enough to choose what she had wanted to wear, Ginny would probably still be wearing frilly lace floral dresses and ringlets in her hair. Ginny shuddered just at the thought of that. Now she was able to pick out her own clothes, do her own hair, and wear makeup if she chose too. She felt more like herself and enjoyed it far more now than she had in the past.

This was one of the main reasons why Ginny joined the Fashion Club. She wanted to discuss pretty things with other people who enjoyed it and appreciated it as much as she did. Her best friends were Francesca and Adam. Adam obviously was not someone who would enjoy looking at dresses and Francesca never seemed the sort of care. So, until this club had been made, Ginny had no one other than herself to really enjoy this pastime.

Ginny walked into the MARS Art Room with pep in her step. She liked this room better than the Muggle Studies class room. She had nothing against the professor, she seemed like a nice enough woman, but Ginny did not feel comfortable in that classroom. Her parents would not approve and it would just look terrible on her. She did not want to soil her reputation, even if she was only in there for a club. Even so, the MARS rooms were much better.

She took a seat in one of the empty chairs and gave a smile to Portia. Portia was from one of those large families that was linked to another large family and so on. She was related to the Head Girl too, but Ginny didn’t know if that was sister related or cousin related. It was one of those things that Ginny would not have an issue with while here. Her family was entirely in Canada. She had actually been able to see them over the holidays. Her parents wanted her to be seen by the Head of the family because he was curious about how her stay at Sonora had gone thus far. Well, she didn’t meet with her Great Great Grandfather, the Head of the family, so much as her Great Grandfather, but it was really the same thing. Great Great Grandfather was ill, he was will into his hundreds so it was not a huge surprise that he could no longer be the lead role and Great Grandfather had taken on the responsibilities, but until the true Head died, he could not take on the role legally. Still, he was quite impressed with her connections and how well things were going for her. Daddy had even promised her that they would be back in Ohio by next year. Things with his business had finally worked itself out and they didn’t need to be in New Mexico anymore. Ginny’s holiday had been utter bliss.

Her face fell a bit when Portia said they would be doing an activity. Ginny was not skilled with a pencil and she never had a desire to design her own clothes. Honestly, she had no idea how people even came up with new designs never done before. She just wanted to talk about pretty things. She tried not to let her disappointment show; Mother always said that a girl was never to reveal her true feelings in the face of the public. Ginny did her best to keep to that code. “Well, I’m not much for drawing, but I wouldn’t mind working with someone. Would that be okay for the activity?” Ginny asked, addressing everyone since someone would have to work with her.

Charlie loved the Fashion Club. He was the only boy in it and maybe some people were giggling or whispering about that behind his back but at least that was all it was – behind his back. He could cope with that. Especially if it meant he had a place where he could be himself and indulge in the things he enjoyed with other like-minded people. He had dance club too, and there were lots of boys there but most of them only did ballroom. The club itself was also geared towards learning lots of different styles of dance and, whilst he really enjoyed that about it, it meant it was... more of a 'trying new things' space than a 'being me and doing what I love' space. The latter had always been something that had been hard to find, or certainly hard to find without inviting nasty comment, and so he appreciated it all the more.

He gave a little squeak and a clap as Portia introduced the activity. Charlie had dabbled in accessory modification in previous years, having been on the quest to find a perfect hat for an augurey feather and having modified Julian's corsage for their ball in first year. Designing his own clothes though... that was a whole new level, and one that sounded really fun.

“I'll work with you,” he smiled at Ginny, when she asked. He couldn't really see Portia saying 'no,' seeing as it was a club and was supposed to be fun. It wasn't like it was a test or anything. “I mean, I'm not brilliant at drawing but I reckon I can most things down on paper. And when you see real designers' sketches, they have loads of labels explaining stuff anyway, so I bet half of them can barely doodle either,” he smiled. He knew Ginny from her presidency of the dance club as well as being classmates, although she wasn't someone he'd spent a lot of time with. Clearly she shared a few of his interests though so he was glad of the chance to get to know her better. “Do you have anything in mind already? Like, even really generally what you want to do... ballgowns or beachwear? Men's or women's?” he prompted.

Ginny’s green eyes turned to the sound of the voice and found it belonging to the only male in the room, not that that had been difficult to decipher when he had spoken. Charlie Boxton-Fox-Reynolds was the questionable boy in her year. He was part of her dance club, but not the way that Adam was. Adam did it because he was her friend and she was pretty sure because families like his would want him to stay on top of his ballroom dancing. Charlie just seemed to like to dance. This was completely okay with Ginny. She liked to dance too. Of course, hers was structured dance, but dancing in general was always a fun thing to be a part of.

Charlie was what her mother called a ‘controversial’ person. Now that she was close to fourteen and had been living in the community in New Mexico, Ginny had an understanding of what her mother meant. Her mother did not say it with any sort of malice and her father never commented on it directly. To them, they were just different and in their society, that made them controversial. Like that Quidditch player who had those groups all the rage several years ago. Ginny didn’t recall what the group names were. Her mother said they sort of took a backseat though and only the more uptight or extreme opposites held on to them. From what her parents understood anyway. They kept to their own selves and taught Ginny to do the same. Of course, Ginny was more inclined to stick her nose into things than her parents, but Charlie controversies weren’t something she was really interested in knowing.

She smiled at him and moved to sit with him so that they could work together. “I’ve never seen any sketch work from designers.” Ginny commented. She had always been under the assumption that they would be fabulous drawers since it was the drawings that everyone would be working from. But, Ginny’s art was in dance and not in fashion. She only knew what she liked and what looked good on her, not how it all got started. “Oh, not really.” Ginny answered, aware that this was not helpful to their cause. “To be honest, I’m pretty sure if I ever bothered to think about this part of fashion, I’d only be copying something I had already seen somewhere else. I wouldn’t even know where to begin to design something all my own.”

She didn’t feel ashamed in acknowledging this. Ginny believed there were probably far more people in the world who couldn’t do this than those who could. Otherwise, everyone would just design and make their own things. “The most creative I can get is with my dance outfits for recitals, but even that is based off someone else’s creation. What about you, you seem really excited for this. I’m sure you have loads of ideas.”
