Melanie did not like doing this. Telling others her good qualities was up there with Valerie being sick and bugs on the list of things she had problems with. She'd rather just be herself and hope that people did notice them for themselves. The Teppenpaw hoped most of all that she was viewed as a sweet girl, always proper and kind to everyone and thought to be intelligent. However, to write these things down about herself just felt so...arrogant . Boastful. Carrie O'Malley was like that and Melanie knew how poorly her fellow fourth year was thought of. Merlin knew that one of last things that the Teppenpaw wanted was to be thought of the same way.
However, being vice president of the book club, was something that she really wanted. She was passionate about and dedicated to it. Which, she supposed, were good things for her to write down. Yes, Melanie had joined Horse Club too, but she loved books more which was why she'd also signed up to help in the library. So as she wanted to do it, and this was what Henny had asked those interested to do, she had no choice but to risk showing a lack of humility. At least the fifth year was the only one who would ever see her behave in such a way though.
Dear Henny, The familiar greeting felt a bit odd, like the way she would have addressed Valerie when writing her those two years that Valerie had been in school and Melanie had not. The way she would address her when writing her after she graduated and Melanie was still here. She was going to miss her sister terribly when that came. She'd at least have Marcus and maybe, just maybe, they'd even end up betrothed. Seth and Lilac's and Martin and Tawny's marriages did not count as connections to the rest of the Lennoxes, to her Great Uncle Edward's desecendents, including her second cousin Henry who was the Lennox family heir. A Crosby-Lennox alliance did not technically exist and all purebloods were interrelated anyway. Which lead to non-purebloods insinuating ugly things about them.
Besides, she really liked Marcus. The way he'd asked her to the ball last year was just the sweetest thing ever and she kind of hoped he might like her too and want that betrothal.
Having never applied for anything before-it was uncommon for a pureblood girl of the Teppenpaw's status to do so, going to Sonora or another school like it was a given and then most girls either got betrothed or married or lived with their parents until that time. Melanie knew Valerie was terrified of this. She had a tendency to get awfully anxious about change when things had been so regimented in her life for so long. Coming to school had been challenge enough for the sixth year and getting married would be another adjustment. In fact, the Teppenpaw would feel a little guilty if she got betrothed to Marcus and her marrige was happier than Valerie's. Though, that didn't stop her from wanting it.
Melanie went back to her application. She tapped her quill, this was not easy for her one bit. She really, really, really hated talking about her good qualities.
I would very much love to be Vice President of the Book Club. I am mature, responsible and dependable, with a real passion for books. She had gotten Bookworm, after all, but that might have been because she was in the book club in the first place. Reading is my favorite hobby in the whole world and I am very dedicated to the Book Club. I also like to help others and make people feel comfortable in social situations. I try to be kind towards everyone, regardless of their background.
Sincerely,
Melanie Lennox
She sent the letter off, hoping it was enough without going overboard and seeming arrogant.
