John lead the students through part of the school, pointing out landmarks of interest along the way, until they reached the doors to the library. “Welcome,” he said, “to the Sonora library. Most students of Sonora do spent a great deal of time here, one way or another, but members of our House are even more likely to be seen among the stacks than any others. That is because our common room is behind it and most easily gotten to through it.”
His expression became momentarily stern. “That does not, however, make it in any way just ‘ours,’” he said, though he knew it was a common misconception. “The library is for everyone, staff and student, and while I expect each of you to use your very best conduct on every occasion, I will be especially displeased if I hear of anyone misbehaving in the library.” He did not have children himself, but when he had been a boy, his mother had often told him and his two siblings that if they simply had to misbehave, they ought to do it at home, where no one but her would have to look at it and they wouldn’t shame their family by it. He supposed he had embraced something of the same philosophy, preferring for them to keep anything they simply couldn’t repress in-House and especially out of the space they were obliged to share with others.
“I hope, however, that that will never happen,” he added, pleasantly again, and led them inside. Many turns through the stacks and identifications of sections later, they reached the back wall.
“I trust,” he said, “that some of you will make friends and have family members outside of Aladren, and that is a very good thing. One thing you must not tell them about, however, is how to enter our common room. This place is only for Aladrens. Understand?” He gave them a moment to nod, then placed his hand on a worn book with the title Birds of Prey. “Very good. When you wish to enter the common room, pull this book, like so, and – “ part of the wall began to swing away – “the door will open.”
He ushered them through into a comfortable room decorated predominately in blue and black, with plenty of bookshelves and a bit of a hawk motif. He took his stand on a rug with the room’s largest image of a bird on it and gathered the students around again before launching into the next part of his opening day announcements.
“Welcome to the common room,” he said. “This is a space where you may read, socialize with others in your House, do homework, and receive news – most school announcements and club sign-ups will appear on the notice board there,” he pointed it out. “One of the first should be the sign-ups for our House Quidditch team; the captain, Arnold Carey, will put them up. I encourage any of you who are interested to sign up, and to speak to him or his Assistant Captain Katrina McLevy if you have any questions about it. We’ve had a very successful team in the past and can always use new blood.
“If you need assistance in any way, another resource available to you are your House prefects – Russell Layne, seventh year, Nora Dobson, fifth year, and Henrietta Boxton-Fox-Reynolds, fifth year. I am also available if you need to speak about an issue with your schoolwork, or adjusting to school.
“Dormitories are up the stairs in the back; boys are on the left, girls on the right, year number will be on the door. There are spells preventing you from entering the wrong side. Curfew is at ten; you don’t have to be asleep, but you do have to be quiet and in the common room. Classes will begin tomorrow at eight, so I suggest you get a good night’s sleep now. First, however, are there any questions?”
OOC: You may now post on all the boards, though your character does not have access to other common rooms. Remember to follow all the Roleplaying Rules and have fun! Welcome to Sonora!
