Bad hair day by Kitty McLevy

Small hands carefully laced up the bodice of her new dress. Kitty wasn’t really use to shoe laces on the front of her shirt, but the reflection in the mirror showed that it didn’t look half bad. In fact, it was nearly perfect. Red satin slippers with tiny roses embroidered into the delicate material were really comfortable and Kitty planned on keeping them to wear often. Now, all that was left was her mass of black curls.

Kitty loved her hair, it was deep black, contrasting beautifully with her freckle dusted porcelain skin. Her mother always said that she had the ‘black Irish’ look about her, all she was missing was the green eyes. But, Kitty liked her eyes even if they weren’t green. It took her almost five minutes of searching to remember that there were no plug ins in the bathroom. None in the bathroom, in the bedrooms, in the whole school. “Oh no!” Kitty cried as she stared at her now worthless hair curler. How could she forget again! No electricity, no pretty curls.

A frantic glance around her room, and the bathrooms showed that the rest of the girls had most likely already gone down to the dance. Large eyes already shiny with tears trembling on the edge of falling Kitty rushed down stairs to the commons hoping someone would be able to help. The first person she saw was Daniel, and boy or not Kitty was just sure he would be able to help. “Can you curl my hair? Kitty asked plaintively, her lower lip trembled slightly showing what would happen if he turned her away.

Sorting things out by Daniel Nash

The morning had been spent sorting out the library, the afternoon had been spent sorting out his packing, and his costume for the ball had been sorted months ago. All that remained was to put it on and head down to the Cascade Hall for his final Midsummer Event.

Unfortunately, James Anthony was still up in their room, and Daniel had no intention of marring his last day at Sonora by spending any more time in his rival's company than absolutely neccessary. Instead he was in the Common Room, trying to figure out his hair (he was contemplating an enlongation charm for a more period style) when he heard someone come down the girl's staircase.

He immediately recognized his Keeper and smiled in greeting just as she blurted out a question about curring her hair. Daniel blinked a couple of times, working out exactly what she wanted (his brain was back up to about 80% functionality after the RATS but still not especially quick) and whether or not he knew how to fulfill the request.

He remembered, after a moment of thought, that he had helped Holly learn a such a styling charm for her wedding, and nodded. "I think so," he offered, then waved her in front of him. It wasn't really one of the duties he thought would ever be required of him as Head Boy, and certainly not as Quidditch Captain, but if it stopped a first year from crying, he felt it qualified as a service to the school.

She was significantly shorter than his older half-sister, but he thought that would actually make it easier. "Hold still," he instructed, and took out his wand. The first attempt at the spell was of limited success - partially, he thought, from a diffence in the volume and natural curl between Holly's hair and Kitty's - but the second one worked much better. After a several more applications of the charm, he held out his mirror for her to check the progress, and asked, "Is that what you're looking for?"

*Is happily sorted* by Kitty

Kitty waited, hoping against hope that Daniel could help. Oh please, please, please! Why can’t they figure out how to make electricity work? Kitty thought, her large blue eyes made even more so by the sheen of tears waiting to fall if he said he couldn’t help. Well…even if he doesn’t know how I’m sure he knows someone who does. Daniel is the Head Boy after all! She thought, because clearly earning that title meant that Daniel was the Best!

“Hold still” Daniel said and Kitty gave him her most brilliant grin. Standing right in front of him Kitty stood as still as humanly possible (a feat that most of the student body would have believed impossible of the tiny girl). She desperately wanted to fidget, but forced herself to remain motionless. Who knows what would happen if she moved at the wrong moment? The idea of her ending up with curly queue eyebrows almost broke her resolve as laughter bubbled behind her lips, desperately attempting to escape. Somehow she managed to swallow it back, and remain unmoving.

Daniel apparently didn’t care for his first attempt, and Kitty was having a much harder time standing still as he tried again. Finally after the charm was applied more than a few times he offered her a mirror and asked what she thought. Bouncing lightly, finally able to move she couldn’t possibly stand still a moment longer, Kitty took the mirror and a very girly squeal of delight escaped her at the perfect black ringlets that bounced with her. “That’s PERFECT!” she cried happily as she threw her arms around his waist in a quick sisterly hug before running back up the stairs to her room.
