Quidditch Team Roster by Captain Daniel Nash

It was a tough call. Both David and Kitty had performed very well as Keeper. David had the edge in number of saves (at least by a small margin), but Kitty had the edge in craziness (which, on this team, after last year, Daniel counted as an essential positive quality).

What made it even more difficult was the political aspect of the decision. David was older and had practiced as their reserve all of last year. He was practically a returning player and it felt almost disloyal to give it to Kitty. All things being equal, Daniel would have given it to him for that alone, but things were not equal.

The Coach was a feminist.

Oh, she preached the good preach of Equality For All, but he knew enough about what DISCUSS was and her part in it, and Daniel understood this: the Coach was a feminist. If he showed up on the pitch with an all male team, he was afraid of being sued for gender discrimination, never mind that David was older and technically better at Keeping than Kitty was. Or if not being sued, of calls being made against Aladren just because they didn't even have a token girl.

It wouldn't have mattered so much if the difference in skill level was enormous. If David had been amazingly spectacular or Kitty had been awful, there would have been no contest, but they were both what Daniel would classify as 'good with excellent potential'. So playing the political game might actually gain them more than it lost them.

Before posting the roster, he made a point of finding David to explain the decision. The second year had done an excellent job in the try-outs, but he was a victim of affirmative action. They had a Boston Pierce as a Coach and Referee, after all. Besides, he was a better all around player after last year's practices, so Daniel would feel more comfortable having him sub in where ever he was needed if it came down to that.

It still sucked for the kid, and Daniel felt bad for it, but a Captain had to make the hard decisions.

The roster, when it did go up, read as follows:

I made it! by Kitty McLevy

Yawning and rubbing her large blue eyes Kitty wandered down stairs. She needed to work on an assignment and still found writing with a quill to be the most ridiculous thing ever so it took her longer to get her reports done than it normally would. “Why can’t they figure out how to make computers work?” she grumbled under her breath as she walked.

Just about to sit down at one of the tables a new sheet of parchment on the bulletin board caught the distractible young girl’s eyes and she left her bag at the table to go check it out. Bouncing on her toes Kitty’s eyes quickly scanned the page. A small squeal of excitement escaped her when cornflower blue eyes traced over her name next to the Keeper position. Even though she loved flying and thought that Quidditch was perhaps the very best game ever, Kitty still hadn’t believed she’d make the team. After all David was older than her, and more experienced, not to mention bigger.

Whatever the reason, Kitty was still almost unbearably excited about being on the team her first year. Such excitement really couldn’t be contained and Kitty bounced over to the first person she saw. “Oh my gosh! I made it, I’m the new Keeper! Can you believe it?” She spoke in an exited chatter.
