An Owl for Paul Tarwater by Boomer

The owl waiting in the Aladren Common Room was a Great Gray, sitting about twenty-six inches tall on the back of one of the blue armchairs. It blinked its relatively small yellow eyes as the students began to trickle in after the Feast. When it spotted the seventh year boy, Paul Tarwater, it hooted softly and shifted in place, trying to attract the boy's attention.

The envelope attached around its heavily feathered leg was made of thick parchment and the top left corner was imprinted with a family seal that few would recognize as the Boston Pierce Heraldic device, but more might recognize as distinctly similar to the one used by the New Hampshire Pierces. For those who didn't, the three lines of text beneath it read quite clearly:

Boston Pierces
Amelia Pierce
Matriarch

In the center of envelope, someone had scribed out the name and destination, Paul Tarwater - Aladren - Sonora Academy, in neat, easily legible script. The letter inside had the same penmanship. It read:

Paul Tarwater,

Given your seniority on the Aladren Quidditch Team, you have been appointed as your House's Quidditch Captain. Please post a sign-up sheet in your common room. I would like a team roster by the end of the month, so please schedule your team try-out accordingly.

If, for any reason, you cannot perform any of these duties or you do not want the position of Quidditch Captain, please send a reply back with Boomer so alternate arrangements can be made. He will wait until you tell him to leave. Also, if you have any recommendations for your assistant captain, you may also make them at this time. Otherwise, one will be assigned to you within the next couple of days.

Thank you,
Coach Amelia Pierce
Sonora Academy
