Aladren Quidditch Team Sign-Up by Anne Wright

Anne fastened the carefully prepared parchment to the House noticeboard with the fussy insistence on straight lines she felt she had become known for, focusing on making the paper top even to keep from crying for the third time in the past twenty-four hours. The common room was silent, now, but she knew it wouldn't stay that way long, and the last thing she wanted was to field a bunch of questions from her roommate, her best friend, or anyone else.

Finally, the list was up to suit her. Smiling shakily, she ran a hand over it, thinking about the year when she'd put it up the first night and looked up from her book all of a sudden to find it full. As she smoothed down the edges, it came back to her how Zack had written in why she shouldn't give him the position, or should at least find someone who could fill his shoes if he was too busy in his final year, as if anyone could've really done that. And Zoey, with her hostility Anne was now sure she'd imagined, and...

It hit her, hard, that they were gone. Just vanished and that was it. Not coming back. And with that realization came the realization that, in just a few months, she would be gone, too.

Forgetting about the feast, she sat down in one of the more secluded armchairs, she stared at the parchment from across the room until a noise jerked her back to reality.

Paul had just come down from his dorm Lussni in hand, facing a new sign of Ragnorak to go along with his new Prefect bagde. Coming to his dorm, Paul had been given a letter by an owl with an invitation. To Elly Eriksson's birthday party. What was he doing with an invitation to her party? He did not like her, and because of that, she did not like him. The end of the world repeated itself in his head as he hid the invitation in the trash can and fled downstairs with his surprisingly heavy cat. Lussni was getting older, so when Paul carried him around the Aladren common room the cat acted more like a stuffed animal than like a real cat.

How old was he? Paul wondered, scratching some of Lussni's skin on a patch of blue fur that melted into pinkish red. The cat looked up at its insomniac master with one eye (the other deeply gauged) and meowed from habit. Paul looked at his cursed-hexed-jinxed cat and saw the first years over in with Professor Flatt as he reached the bottom step. He came out from hiding on the stairs when he heard the muffled voice of Flatt stating his name. Out of habit, Paul wondered if he was being called, and he tried to hide behind his lack of hair (choosing now to hide behind his cat instead, who was limp with sleep now).

Then Paul remembered the new shiny badge on his chest, under Lussni's bulk of fur, a sign of the coming apocalypse or something. He turned away from Flatt quickly, trying to not look like a fool who had tried to forget that he was a trusted Prefect and instead looked to the bulletin board. Seeing the Quidditch sheet, Paul remembered his mother's earlier askings. Should he quit Quidditch?

But he had been on the team since First Year, and Anne probably wouldn't enjoy losing another member of her team (since Zack and Zoey had graduated). It was normal for him to be on the team, and plus, Beating had been very calming for him before. And maybe doing something normal to him would offset this flood from getting Prefect. Holding Lussni in one hand now, Paul fished through his pockets for the beaten quill he'd placed there earlier. It was charmed with ink already in it, so Paul didn't have to do that work, and the boy quickly signed his name up under Anne's.

I want to hit things...badly. by Chrissy Hollister

Ever since the sorting, Chrissy had been angry. Violently wanting to stab, hit and break things angry.It took every little bit of restraint and conscience to hang on to her off the pitch ethics of non-violence to not harm her twin. Chrissy had pretty much no patience for anything about Samantha, whether it be her whining, her dramatics, her ignorance or her incessant chatter about inane trivial subjects that Chrissy did not care one little bit about. When Chrissy let on how little she cared, Samantha lectured her about being polite (because Chrissy was not in her telling Samantha what she felt about her conversation topics), and why Chrissy should care.

All of this had left Chrissy short tempered and irritable. When she saw the Quidditch sign ups, she headed right for them and placed her name right on the list.

Summer had been another one of its normal craziness. He swore that at some point he was going to have a normal one. Of course, the next one came with his graduation, which just may mean the craziness wouldn’t have a due break called school and would just continue on until the day he died. Though, he wondered if half of it didn’t have to do with the company he kept. His ex showed up at his house for what he could only call an odd conversation. Then, there was Andi and the few dates he had with her, which could also be dubbed strange. The most normal person in his life was Bella, which was saying much, because she came with her own set of rules that he had yet to comprehend. But then, he had never claimed to be brilliant when it came to females.

At least the latter had come with a much needed vacation in Mexico, which had been fun, but then how could it not have been? He got to spend time with his best friend and meet a lot of her enormous family plus laze around on the beach. By the time school had come around, he was ready to go back into what was leading up to the RATS. He had done fairly well with his CATS and with the lightened course load; he was hoping to do even better on the RATS. And then there was his other stress relief. Quidditch. The tips of his mouth turned up in a grin. Anne already had the sign-ups posted. He pulled out a quill to add his name to the list when he noticed with a frown another name on there. Chrissy Hollister and she had signed up to be a Beater, his position.

Chris Dupree, 7th Year, Beater

His name was added and he had no doubt that the additional person would make tryouts interesting, but he had no intention of losing his spot. He had been a Beater for the last two years since he had rejoined the team. Of course, he supposed, if necessary, depending on what Anne wanted, he would consider going back to Keeper, but there was absolutely no way he would be a Chaser or Seeker. It wasn’t that they weren’t important positions, because they were, but there wasn’t the same type of aggression in them. Okay, Keeper wasn’t exactly aggressive, but at least he could attack the quaffle coming towards the goals, which wasn’t the same with passing and scoring with it. As for Seeker, he didn’t really have an eye for it for starters and he really didn’t want to sit around on a broom trying to, so it was definitely either Beater or Keeper for him.

Delany sat in one of the large, poofy chairs in front of the fireplace in the common room. She had a muggle book sitting on her lap turned to page 157. She had started the book at the very end of her vacation, and now she was finishing it.

The section in her book was actually, a dull spot. There was no excitement, no interest, no anything that was keeping her enticed in the book. So why was she reading it? Because, she had nothing better to do. She set her multi-colored book mark on the page she was reading, and slowly closed the book. She set in on the side table and stood up from her chair.

She looked around the common room, trying to find something to do. There wasn't much. There were no new people to acquaint herself with, and no old friends to say hi to. She walked around, looking at varying objects. She found an old quill under a pile of papers on one table, two drops of pink ink on the upper right hand corner of one desk, and a neon green piece of broken plastic. She collected the piece of plastic in her hand and walked over to notice board.

She looked over at the many notices and nodded at some, frowning at others, and a few actually got a chuckle out of her. She was about to turn away when she saw a corner of one last piece of paper. She followed the corner to the rest of the sheet and read it over. It was the quidditch sign-up! She had been waiting for this since the welcoming speech last year! She quickly tried to find an extra quill but was unsuccessful. She walked over and grabbed the old broken quill and walked back over to the notice board. She quickly scribbled on her hand to see if the quill was self inking. Unfortunately, it wasn't and she had to start a search for ink. She finally found an almost empty container of orange ink, and she decided it would have to do. She dipped the quill in the container, and brought it back out and set it to the sign-up. She set the quill to the paper, and trying to keep the tip from wobbling off of the pen, started to write her name. When she got to the L in her first name, the quill slipped and splotched over her L. She quietly huffed and tried to finish her name. After another few attempts she finished her first name and set down the quill. This was not working. She frowned at the board before quickly running up to her trunk and grabbing a new quill and the first container of ink she saw. She ran back down the stairs, jumping over three at a time, almost slipping once, and stopped back in front of the board. She opened the ink and did not realize until she had finished her post, that she had grabbed her ink she used to write home to her little sister. This was only important because that ink just happened to be neon pink. She sighed looking at the post. There were plenty of neat, single colored posts, with no splotches, and then there was her post. She smiled slightly, thinking of what the captain would think when she saw her sign-up. Delany looked back over her information before she grabbed her quill and ink and walked back over to her chair, sat back down, and decided to open her book once more, and continue on through her struggle with boredom.
