Horses! [HoH Office; looking for Professor K.] by Jaeven Dimitri

Jae wasn't muddy for the first time in ages as he skipped down the hall, looking for the Aladren Hoho office. How one managed to get muddy in the middle of the desert was a mildly odd mixture of chasing cats chasing gnomes in the Gardens, as well as being a veritable magnet for dirt. However, as he had just come from showering because of such mud, his hair was merely damp and Jaeven was otherwise quite presentable.

Or, as presentable as a hyperactive child from Boulder, Colorado could be, anyway. His damp blonde dreadlocks were bouncing about like there was no tomorrow. Jae also wore a dark blue t-shirt that pronounced in vibrant orange "why do we kill people who kill people to show them that killing people is wrong?" over his tan cargo pants. Astonishingly, Jae had also managed to get his robes on correctly. The diamond stud in his ear glinted as it caught the light as usual, and over his shoulder was slung a maroon bag that advertised for the Muggle grocery store, Whole Foods. In the bag was his cat and his sloyka.

Finally reaching the door, he knocked on it, then bounced in place a bit. "Professor K.? It's Jae! Do you have horses?"\n\n

Professor K

...Okay... by Professor K

Kiva was in her quarters packing up a few belongings and taking good care of her creatures before the threat of midterm was upon them. She had to make sure she had everything in order before heading off on leave. Merlin knew how long she would actually be gone for. She knew at least two weeks after midterm she would be gone, possibly a month.

Now back in her office, Kiva straightened up the papers on her desk, marking the ones that she had completed while putting those that still needed to be worked on in another pile. The letters to her contact sat in a neat little pile at the corner of her desk waiting patiently to be mailed. Right now her trusted owl was delivering a letter on the headmaster's request, so she would have to wait to mail these a little while longer. She would have to be sure the replacement would know how to deduce the charms that protected the animals as well as had enough brain power in knowing how to feed them properly. Perhaps Kiva could come by every so often just to be sure...

No, no, that wouldn't work. If she came by even for a few minutes, Kiva would feel compelled to stay and she would be leaving her mother alone for periods of time when Kiva knew she wouldn't be able to handle the quiet.

Part way through packing up some of her books, Kiva heard a knock on her door and a muffled voice that quickly followed. "Horses?" Kiva questioned as she waved her wand to open the door. "Afternoon Jaeven." Kiva greeted the first year. "What's this about horses?"\n\n

*shrug* you think up a title, then by Jae

The door opened with a click right in front of Jae's nose. When it had opened all the way, he saw Professor K. She was holding her wandstick and next to her were some books, halfway through being packed away. He wondered if they were Comec books. Professor K. was the Comec teacher, after all. Why was she packing? Was she going home for midterm too?

"What's this about horses?"

"Do you have horses? Can we do them for Comec? Mika said he rode horses sometimes and I think Gwyn does too. I can't remember, though. She was in our group in Comec. She's in Teppenpaw. Mika thought I was too, except I'm really in Pecari with Saul and Caedence and Brett. And I have a horse and I ride horses too. My horse's name is Chester, 'cept he's really only sort of mine 'cause Nina's taking care of him while I"m here. Oh! And Todd is being good and happy and Mika named his sloyka Spot and he's happy too. But can we have horses?

Jae stopped talking and looked at Professor K. pleadingly. He had been used to being around animals quite a bit more than he was at Sonora, and, really, he missed it. If there were horses, then he could maybe help take care of them. And if he could help take care of them, that would definitely be amazinglymadcool. And if there weren't horses, Professor K. could get some, maybe, right? She was the teacher after all.\n\n

Wow, no need for an attitude by Kiva

There was one thing tha Kiva knew was on her list of things 'To Do' when it came to being a teacher: Learn how to understand the language that the children speak. In all honesty, she probably was only able to pick up on one or two of the things that Jaeven had said to her. He was so hyped up on something that words just fell from his mouth at such a rate that by the end of it all, Kiva was left blinking and feeling rather foolish for doing so.

"I..." Kiva didn't even know where to begin with all of this. She was glad to here that Mika'el was making friends, for awhile, Kiva was beginning to wonder if the kids were going to give him a chance. But, with what she knew Jaeven, Kiva doubted the kid would exclude anyone from being his friend. He was just too...perky. And clearly saw the world differently. That was refreshing and rather tiring for Kiva.

"To answer your original question, yes, horses will be part of the Care of Magical Creatures curriculum, but not for a long while. You all are still young and have to start from the easiest animals and work your way up to creatures such as horses." Kiva finally answered him. She flicked her wand and watched as the papers on her desk straightened themselves up once more and books made their way into their rightful boxes.

"I'm glad you both like having your puffskeins. For awhile, I thought you kids would eventually get bored of them. It's a shame though, how many I still have left. There in such an abundance that most get neglected at pet shops. Anyway, I'm sorry about the horses Jaeven, but you'll have to wait a little longer before you get a chance to see them."\n\n

Sorry by Jae

Jae was very disappointed. No horses for years? But they weren't that hard, were they? You had to make sure you didn't get stepped on, and sometimes they hurt themselves really, really easily, but why else wouldn't they be allowed to see the horses?

Unless...were there magic horses?!

And if there were magic horses, then maybe they'd be dangerous, right?

And maybe if they were dangerous, then Professor K. wouldn't want to tell him because they would be for when they were really a lot older and she didn't want him to get all disappointed or anxious when he was waiting to see them?

Jae stopped being disappointed and immediately perked up. He wouldn't ruin Professor K.'s surprise. He would just be really, really quiet about it and then be uberhappy when they did them in class.

"Um...could I help take care of the extra sloykas?" Jae asked, hopefully. "It's OK for waiting for horses. But if there are lots of extra sloykas, maybe I could help take care of them? And Todd and Jenny could visit them? Jenny's really nice about sloykas and stuff, she doesn't chew on them or anything! And what's a crup? Caedence said you had a crup. Are those nice like sloykas too?"\n\n

It's fine by Professor K

Without her really knowing how long she would be gone for, Kiva was having a hard time deciding on what to pack away to leave room for the substitute, what to take with her, and what to leave behind. All the while thinking just how in the world did she end up with so much stuff in the first place. She had lived in the wild for five years with hardly even the clothes on her back, but working at this school for four years and she's accumulated so much junk.

"Would you like some candy?" Kiva asked Jaeven, indicating the dish on her desk filled with sweets. Kiva wasn't a candy lover herself, but since she started working with kids, she felt that having something around they like was always a positive in their eyes.

Ria, Kiva's brilliantly white Persian cat with an attitude that could rival anyone's, hopped onto one of the free chairs and looked over the boy with her cool blue eyes. Kiva smiled at her cat before turning back to the first year in her office. "Jaeven, why do you call it a sloyka? They are puffskeins." She was curious as to where that name came from, she had read it in his aunt's letter, but couldn't figure out if it was just some name he came up with.

"As for helping, I'll be gone for awhile and there will be a substitute in my place. It'll be up to the substitute to allow you to help while I'm away. I don't see how it'll be any sort of issue though." Kiva paused for a moment and took a breath. The one real good thing about being the Head of House for Aladren was that most of the children were reserved and quiet. They took their time when speaking and paused for breath. Jaeven was the complete opposite.

"Crups are what some would call the magical form of a dog. They don't like muggles all that much, if at all, but it's really depends on how they are raised." Kiva smiled as she continued to pack. "Don't worry about those either, there will come a time when you will learn of those as well."\n\n

Re: It's fine by Jae

"Yesthanks!" Jae said when Professor K. offered him candy. She was officially the best professor in all of Sonora. Professor O'Leary gave out candy, and Professor McKindy had frogs, but Professor K. had lots of candy and lots of animals. He politely took one and ate it. Contemplating taking another one, Jaeven was distracted by the appearance of a white cat on a chair. He had a cat too; she was blueish gray and teeny.

"Mika calls them sloykas," Jae explained seriously, eyes on the cat. It was really, really white. The first year could probably bet that he had not seen a cat (or any animal, for that matter) quite that white before. "I think it's a word in his languages. He speaks a lot of them. That's why he's in Aladren; he's really smart. He reads a lot of books, too, and was telling me all about these ones with talking lions and magic horses and stuff. I might borrow some from him."

Distracted by the cat again, he kept watching her as Professor K. continued speaking. "OK. I'll ask the substitute. Are you going home for midterm too? I am. Mika's going to come and visit me. My aunts said he could and his mom said yes too. Can I pet the kitty? What's her name?"

When it came to things such as food and animals, Jaeven was usually able to focus on them. Unfortunately, this did not leave much room for conversation on other topics. Luckily for his pets, Jae also had a fairly good memory and sense of responsibility when it came to caring for them. Chances were, otherwise, that he would not have been able to keep his puffskein or get his cat, never mind the horse that his neighbor, Nina, was currently taking care of. \n\n
