Like the two years before, Zack did not go home for Christmas midterms. Sure, it was snowy here for the duration of the break, but it was freezing in Detroit and not nearly as nice to look at through the windows. That, and any excuse not to be near his brother was a good one. Besides, the decorations his mother put up during the holidays were kind of sad. Pathetic-sad, not sad-sad or corny-sad. And she refused to put up his Vulcan Santa in the window.
Not having a Vulcan Santa in the window was a state of affairs he cheerfully corrected here at Sonora. In fact, he was correcting it now. His first year, he'd been a little reluctant to put it in the common room because he was just the new kid and he wasn't sure if people would try to take it down on him, so he'd put it up in the first year boy's room (he'd been the only first year boy). Last year, he'd gotten a little more daring and hung it on the hallway side of his door.
Today, though, today he was putting it in the window of the common room so everyone could appreciate a Vulcan Santa.
Stepping back, he regarded his placement, and though it looked a little dwarfed by the window, so he drew out his wand and enlarged the Santa by 25 percent. That looked much better, and he nodded in satisfaction.
That complete, he decided the next step was to string up the blue garlands with little Alderaans wearing Santa hats hanging off of them around the room. (He'd gotten very bored last summer while his computer was being repaired after he'd overheated it.)
Unfortunately, he quickly discovered being only just over four and a half feet tall was a serious disadvantage to garland hanging. He was gonna need some help here. "Hey!" he called to the person who had the misfortune of choosing just then to step into the room, "Want to give me a hand with this?"
Just then the armchair he'd been standing on decided to offer protest to his uneven distribution of weight. "Whoa!" Zack wobbled, waving his arms around wildly for balance, the garland dancing around, jangling in vaguely sine shaped waves.\n\n
