Lucian D'Alesandro

June 28, 2013 9:20 PM
Lucian made his way to the MARS room for sports to set up for the first Fencing Club meeting. He was wearing comfortable clothing consisting of black and red Nike tennis shoes, worn relaxed-fit blue jeans, and a black Rise Against t-shirt. He wished that he could actually get into some moves today, for he was anxious to have a partner to duel with, but he had to have the member’s parents send in permission forms first since it was a sport based on fighting. Lucian quickly set up a small table and placed a pile of permission forms on it.

Fencing was actually one of the only sports he and his sister were allowed to participate in. Lucian’s mother always expressed her opinion that most sports were stupid. She would always comment on how they were chasing a ball around for no reason, or how the athletes wouldn’t survive a more vigorous sport. He suspected that she also approved of fencing since it was often associated with aristocratic culture.

Lucian set up another table with various drinks and snacks for those who were coming. Even though he couldn’t really get into anything exciting today, he hoped everyone would at least hang out for a while and get to know each other. Mats were set up around the room, as well as dummies, so prospective members could at least get an idea of what would be going on.

One problem he ran into was the issue of uniforms. He knew that purchasing them may be a problem for some members, but he had an idea that he would present to everyone once they got there. Lucian’s mind began to wander a bit as he sat down to relax before other people entered the room. What if no one came? He had made sure to write the announcements on brightly colored blue paper so they didn’t get lost among all of the other ones posted in the common rooms. Still, there were so many new clubs this year, as well as a few more established ones, and he worried that there wouldn’t be much interest in fencing.

However, his thoughts were interrupted as people began entering the room. Happily, he stood up and waited for everyone to get settled in before he began speaking. He wasn’t much of a public speaker, so he wanted to address the main concerns and points, and then let people mingle.

“Hello everyone,” he began, smiling, “Welcome to the first meeting for the Fencing Club. I am Lucian D’Alesandro, for those who do not know me. I have always liked fencing, so I figured why not start a club.” He looked around the room at the potential members, and then turned towards the mats and dummies. He also had a foil propped up against the permission form table. “As you can see, we will be working with dummies at first as we learn the basics. Then when you start to feel comfortable with the defensive and offensive moves, you may spar with a partner. If you have participated in fencing before and feel more advanced, you may work with another more advanced member or help me with other members who are just learning the basics.”

Lucian reached down and picked up the foil. “This is a foil,” he continued, “and it is the basic weapon used in fencing. We will be starting with these, but may incorporate the other two weapons later. This brings me to my next topic. Since fencing is a sport that involves fighting, every person who decides to become a member must have a permission form signed by a parent or guardian and turned into the Headmistress before they are able to participate. The forms are on the table next to me, and you may grab one on your way out. Also, Professor Levy will be our advisor, and oversee the activities of the club.”

He paused for a moment to let everyone take in what he just said. Lucian felt as thought he had been talking forever, and he still had more to say. “I have also been presented with the concern of some members not being able to purchase a fencing outfit, which is essential for protection. Basic outfits can be purchased at a relatively cheap price, but I have a few that I may be able to provide at our next meeting. Also, if any of you have any spare uniforms that you can donate for other members, it would be greatly appreciated. Please bring any uniforms you wish to donate to the next meeting. If anyone wants to join and is still concerned about obtaining an outfit, please see me and I will try my best to find a way to help you get one. I don’t want anyone to pass up on becoming a member simply because they do not have an outfit.”

He looked around the room once more, and decided that he had given them all the information he had to for the day. “That is about all I have for you information wise today. I was hoping we could go around the room and introduce ourselves. After you say your name, please tell us a little about yourself and why you are interested in Fencing Club. After introductions are over, feel free to help yourselves to snacks on the far table and hang out with each other for a bit. I will post another announcement to inform everyone when the next meeting is.”

Lucian, happy that all of that was over with, sat down on the mat beneath him and started out the introductions. “As you know, I am Lucian. I am a fourth year. I have always had an interest in fencing, and it is one of the only sports my mother allowed my sister and I to participate in. However, I am also a Beater on the Aladren Quidditch team this year. My other interests are art, playing drums, and reading a lot of books.” He turned to the person on his right, and nodded for them to continue on with the introductions.

OOC: As far as the permission slips go, if your character decides to become a member of the club, please include that your character’s parent (or guardian) turned the form in to the Headmistress somewhere in your post for the second meeting. If you have any questions or comments for Lucian, please tag him in your post.

Dimitri Porter

July 03, 2013 11:20 AM
Dimitri saw the notices around the school posted up for the new Fencing Club and couldn’t wait to sign up. He and his sister Darina had been fencing since they were about 6 years old, although he had to admit that there was a difference between the type of fencing he and Darina were used to and the type that Lucian would be teaching them. Dimitri was very familiar with both methods of fencing and prided himself on being very skillful at both. He had to admit though that his talents lay with the type of fencing that they used for their medieval reenactment more than the “normal” type of fencing. They had a different set of rules when they were fencing for their reenactments. He just hoped he could remember the right set of rules for the club. He found one of the sign up posters and put his name on the list. He was fairly certain his sister would be signing up as well, but didn’t bother putting her name on the sheet with his. He was sure Rina would get to it when she could.

He went up to the MARS rooms where the club was to meet and pulled open the sports room door. He found Lucian inside with some fencing gear and waved hello to him. He grabbed himself a snack off the refreshment table and had a seat on one of the mats while they waited for others to arrive. Lucian seemed surprised that anyone had shown up for this and Dimitri couldn’t really understand why. Fencing was one of the best activities there was next to drawing and Dimitri practiced what felt like 10 hours a day. He was pretty sure that was an exaggeration as far as the time thing went, but that’s what it felt like sometimes. It was one of the few activities he and his sister did together willingly. He waited with Lucian while the rest of the would be members arrived and settled in. He listened as Lucian introduced himself and explained what they would be doing with the club. Dimitri figured that when Lucian was done with the introductions he would offer to help out in some way. He waited for Lucian to finish talking before he stood up and introduced himself.

“Hi…my name is Dimitri Porter and I’m a first year. I’ve been doing fencing since I was about 6 and know at least two different forms of fencing.” Dimitri introduced himself and quietly sat back down so the next person could go. Once all the introductions were made Dimitri walked over to Lucian and tried his best at pleasant conversation since they wouldn’t actually be fighting at this meeting. Dimitri was also looking forward to talking with Lucian because he was actually meeting his cousin’s best friend and crush in the flesh. From the way she talked about him over the summer it almost made Dimitri sick to hear any more. It was like all his female cousins had gone completely boy crazy at the same time over the summer. Every single one of them, with the exception of the youngest ones, met someone over the summer while they were in England and went completely nuts. Dimitri had gone out for walks by himself just to get away from the amount of gushing all the girls were doing. He literally could not hear himself think over all of the sighing and giggling that they were doing. It was almost obscene. He was glad when school started and he didn’t have to listen to it anymore.

He picked up one of the consent forms and folded it up so it fit in his pocket. He slid it into the pocket of his khakis and turned to face Lucian. He held out his hand to him. “Its nice to finally put a face to the name,” he greeted the older boy. “My cousin spent most of the summer talking about you.” Dimitri rolled his eyes slightly at that comment. “Its nice to finally meet her best friend. I’m Dimitri, Clara’s cousin.” After he introduced himself he waited for Lucian to either shake his hand or not. He continued either way. “I’ve got some extra fencing gear at home if you’d like me to bring it for the next meeting. I can also help show everybody some fencing moves if you’d like,” he offered cheerfully.

Darina Porter

Darina had seen the signups for Fencing Club and was sort of on the fence for signing up. Sure, she knew how to fence both in the Medieval way and in the current way, but she wasn’t nearly as good at that as she was at her writing. Mitri was much better than she was, even learning starting at the age of 6 like the both of them had done. I can still fight though… Though I’m better at the Medieval rules than modern ones… she thought to herself as she checked the list again and saw her brother’s name as the first one on the list. Rina noticed that he hadn’t taken the liberty to sign her up too, though she almost fully expected him to have done just that with a club like this. Maybe he had the same ‘on the fence’ thoughts as I did? she thought. “Nope… I doubt that. He loves fencing…” she said into the silence of the room as she added her name to the list, knowing she’d regret it if she didn’t.

The day of the first Fencing Club meeting in the MARS room, she put on a pair of black sweatpants and a yellow long sleeve t-shirt with her yellow and black Nike sneakers. She didn’t have any of her gear with her, but she was sure that if this meeting went well, that her parent’s wouldn’t have a problem sending her and Mitri their gear from home!

Walking into the room, she smiled at Mitri, though she wasn’t sure if her twin had seen her. She also, like him, sat down on one of the mats that Lucian set up and when Lucian started talking, she listened carefully. Rina knew that one of the most important things to know about fencing was the fact that you had to listen carefully to those that both knew better and were making sure that you were playing safely and correctly. She listened to his every word and when he mentioned about the fact that the club would need more uniforms and things like that, she wanted to raise her hand and offer some of their extras but when she saw the look on Mitri’s face, she knew he wanted to offer both their extra gear and his assistance, so she kept her hand down. Lucian introduced himself again, this time saying more about himself and Mitri spoke up next. Rina smiled when her twin finished and started herself.

“And I’m Darina Porter, Mitri and I are both first years and as he said, we’ve been fencing since we were six, though I’ll never say I’m as good as he is.” she said to finish off her little introduction. When the introductions went on around her, she watched and listened to see who the people all were and what they knew about the sport. After they finished, she made to go find Mitri again, and found him, talking to Lucian. She picked up a permission slip and watched from afar, and wondered if anyone would come talk to her too.

Keme RunningBear

OOC: Sorry, I didn’t know how to post for the introduction thread because the other two posts cut it off and moved on from the introductions. So, I made a separate thread for anyone who just wants to keep it to the meet and greet intros. BIC:

Keme had decided to try to get more accustomed to things here than he had in the previous year. He had discovered that most people here were friendly and extremely outgoing which was about as opposite to him as one could get. He wasn’t impolite or anything like that. Keme was always nice to people. He was just… quiet. And having an equally quiet roommate was not really helping him get used to things at Sonora. His parents had told him that he needed to work on meeting new people and getting comfortable with them. Classes were okay to do that, but it was limiting and most people seemed to partner with friends. Clubs were the next best thing. This way, he could at least meet people who might have the same common interests as him.

Sonora’s clubs were limiting though. He had joined the dance club because he felt that would at least be a social gathering and somewhat fun. He had enjoyed the ball with Willow and had danced with her. He thought that would help boast his confidence a bit. And then there was Fencing. He felt this would help him within his tribe. They always did things in his tribe that assisted with becoming better Hunters. He was a tracker, he was a archer, he was a fisherman, he was a fighter, and the list went on. None of the clubs really helped him gain any knowledge in the fields he was already a competitor in, but fencing would help his coordination and defensive combat skills. Not that they fought for anything serious at home, it was just something to do to keep them occupied and to give them strength. He felt fencing would be the best fit for him over any of the others.

Unsure of what to expect, Keme had dressed as he would have if he were going tracking. He wore loose fitting stretch pants and a plain tee shirt. He also wore a pair of moccasins as they were light and did not make sound as he moved. Coming into the MARS room, Keme found himself looking at a group of people sitting on some mats. He would have preferred chairs, but oh well. He sat himself down with his legs folded under him and waited patiently for the events to unfold. Keme listened quietly as Lucien spoke to the group at large. A part of him (his pride most likely) did not like the idea of someone who was not the group ‘leader’ to help him learn the skill. He knew this was a silly thought because they simply knew more about the sport than he did, but he felt it gave individuals too much power and they could try to act as though they were in charge instead of just helpers.

Keme paid attention while Lucien explained what they would be working with and that parental permission would be necessary. Keme had no doubt that his parents would sign the form and also be excited to hear that he had joined a club. Keme had read a little on fencing when he had first learned of the club to see if it was suitable. So, he already had an idea on how to explain the sport to his parents and to his grandfather, the Chief. He was not at all concerned about this. As for an outfit, he would have to research pricing. His tribe was very prosperous so money wasn’t the issue. He just didn’t like the idea of having to ask for it. He’d figure it out. If nothing else, he’d work it off during winter break.

The final part of the meeting was the introductions. Keme expected this. The first couple of students to introduce themselves after Lucien were apparently relatives. Or, rather, siblings. Keme recognized them from class, but did not know them. Keme nodded his head to them before beginning. “I am Keme RunningBear. I am a Second Year, Aladren Student. I am an experienced Archer and Tracker. I have no experience with fencing, but I look forward to learning.” Keme advised before turning it over to the next person to introduce themselves.

After everyone had finished introductions, Lucian stood at the front of the room by the tables in case anyone had any questions for him. He watched as a few people took a permission form, and felt relieved that some potential members planned on joining after the first meeting.

After a few moments, he saw the first year that introduced himself as Dimitri Porter walking towards him. “It is nice to meet you as well,” Lucian said to the boy after his introduction, “Thanks for coming to the meeting.” He laughed a bit at Dimitri’s next statement. “Clara talked about me all summer huh? I will be sure to tease her about that later. Also, I am sorry. That must have been torturous. It seems like all of the girls are going a little boy crazy lately.” Lucian had to admit though, that it was nice to know that Clara was that fond of him.

Lucian shook Dimitri’s hand and smiled at his next comment about bringing extra fencing gear. “That would be awesome. Thanks. I am hoping to have a few extra uniforms and gear so everyone can be a part of the club. You said that you have been fencing since you were six, right? Showing everyone some moves would be great...or maybe I can pair you up with someone a little less experienced so you can help them out.”

Dimitri was glad that he could be of assistance for the fencing club. He nodded at Lucian’s comment about the fencing gear. “I’d be glad to write to my folks and have them send it all. Its no problem whatsoever,” he assured Lucian. “I’m even willing to let the other members take the uniforms with them if they want to practice with them outside of club,” he offered. He was glad Lucian shook hands with him. He seemed pleased when Dimitri mentioned that Clara talked about him all summer. Dimitri couldn’t really understand why that would matter to Lucian much, but it really wasn’t any of his business so he left it alone. He was just glad that Clara had a friend other than their cousin Brielle to talk to. Bri was monstrously fun and everything, but she was a gushy girl and he knew that Clara needed someone she talk to who wasn’t going to gush about everything. For pity’s sake, the girl lived in ripped jeans and Ramones t-shirts with flip flops or tennis shoes when she didn’t have to dress up. He really couldn’t understand how she could be a Pureblood and not behave like one. In a way he was kind-of glad for that because that made her easier to tolerate and funner to be around.

He nodded at Lucian’s suggestions of either showing the other members a few moves or pairing up with one of the newer fencers who have never fenced before. Both sounded like good ideas to him. “I’d be glad to show everyone a few moves if you‘d like,” he confirmed. “I also like the idea of pairing off with someone newer as well. It takes some of the scare factor off of learning…at least for some people,” he commented. Dimitri remembered when his father had started teaching him how to fence. He had been soo afraid he might poke his dad that he hadn’t really wanted to learn. He also really hadn’t been looking forward to the possible injury factor for himself as well. His dad had assured him that with the proper gear he could do it without hurting himself too badly. He had even shown Dimitri how to make his own fencing gear. Sure he had had to buy an actual fencing mask, but the other garments he and his dad made. He had gotten a couple of “mundane” fencing outfits as well, but he used the homemade stuff more than the “mundane” anyway.

Dimitri knew that he was probably going to get some pretty funky looks for his homemade stuff, but he was willing to put it up to any bought outfit any day. He was still musing slightly over his homemade outfits when an interesting thought crossed his mind he couldn’t help feeling curious about. He figured that he and Darina would sign up for this particular club, what he couldn’t understand was why Clara hadn’t signed up as well. Last he remembered, she was a fairly decent fencer (according to his dad) and he would have thought she’d be the first one to sign up for her friend’s club. Maybe she just hadn’t gotten around to it yet. “Ya know…my cousin Clara is a pretty decent fencer as well,” he commented off-handed. “She might be a little rusty though. I’m a little surprised she’s not already here,” he glanced around the room frowning when he failed to spot her. Dimitri thought she might have shown up late or something, but that wasn’t the case. “If its alright with you, I can grab a permission slip for her as well and make sure that she gets it for our next meeting. Ya know…since she seems to have missed this first one.” Dimitri smiled as he made the offer. He figured Clara was probably going to snap at him for volunteering her to join, but he was fairly certain that she would get over it once she got back into the whole thing. Besides it meant she got to spend more time with him and Darina here at school. How could that possibly be a bad thing?

“That would be even more awesome,” Lucian said in reply to Dimitri’s offer of letting other members use his gear, “I was hoping to get into more exciting things the next meeting. I would have liked to start today, but unfortunately everyone had to get the slips signed first. Hopefully the meeting wasn’t too boring.”

Lucian looked around the room for a few moments, and then turned back to Dimitri and nodded. “Fencing can be a bit intense when you are first starting out. I mean, you are trying to poke each other with weapons that resemble swords. It can be a bit intimidating, especially if it is someone you know.” Lucian felt lucky that he first learned fencing at a private club in Boston. He would have loved to learn it in France or Italy, but his parents had already decided to move to Massachusetts before he was able to show interest. His sister joined him at the club a year after he began, when she was nine, but she was still a beginner and he didn’t have to worry about having to fence with her. Still, the fact that his sister knew how to properly stab at people with a foil made Lucian a bit uneasy. He was glad that she hadn’t made an appearance at the first meeting.

After Dimitri mentioned that Clara was experienced with fencing as well, Lucian raised an eyebrow with curiosity. “Oh really,” he began, “She never mentioned it.” He nodded in agreement when Dimitri expressed that he was surprised she wasn’t there. “Me too,” Lucian stated, wondering why his best friend would not come to his club meeting. His mind began to wander, and he was curious whether or not she was trying to avoid him or the situation they found themselves in. However, that didn’t seem like something she would normally do. He shrugged, trying not to overthink it, and nodded once more at Dimitri. “Sure, you can take a slip for her. Maybe she has just been busy with other clubs and Quidditch.” At least, that was what he was telling himself for the moment.

Dimitri scratched his head slightly in confusion. He didn’t quite understand why Clara hadn’t told Lucian that she fenced. It probably never came up he reasoned to himself. He nodded absently when Lucian mentioned that maybe she was busy with other stuff and Quidditch. Dmitri looked at him slightly confused. “How did you know she was playing Quidditch?” he asked. “Did she tell you she was playing?” Dimitri couldn’t shake the feeling that she hadn’t really told anyone yet she was playing. Given his cousin’s colorful track record with flying, he was amazed that she even had the courage to sign up for it, let alone play it. Dimitri started laughing slightly as he thought about her last attempt at it. “If she hasn’t said anything yet its probably because she doesn’t want anyone to freak out about her doing it,” Dimitri offered. “I mean, lets be serious here. The last time Clara tried playing Quidditch with our other cousins she nearly ran herself headfirst into a large tree trying to catch the quaffle. She clipped the tree and sent herself crash landing into a large blackberry bush.” Dimitri shook his head as he continued. “Dude, you should have seen her. She was covered in scratches from head to toe. She looked like she got into a fight with a cat and lost…bad. She was also covered in blackberry juice so she looked like walking bruise. It had to be the funniest thing I had ever seen.”

Dimitri shrugged about being able to fight their first meeting in. It didn’t surprise him that they couldn’t. “I didn’t think we would be fighting this first meeting anyway,” he told him matter-of-factly. “I figured this would be more of a meet and greet anyway.” Dimitri shrugged again when Lucian thanked him for the use of the gear. “Really its no big deal,” he assured the older boy. “Its my pleasure. My way of getting to know people (as it were).” He tried his hand at joking. He wasn’t entirely certain that it had worked. He took the extra slip for Clara. “I wouldn’t worry too much about her not mentioning she fences man. I’m pretty sure there’s probably a few things she didn’t tell you about. Ever since her mom died, she’s been kind-of involved in a lot of things. Mostly I think my uncle did it so she wouldn’t be sad or anything, but who knows? I mean seriously dude? How many girls can you think of that horseback rides, plays piano and violin, played football (muggle soccer), speaks two different languages (fluently), can ballet dance (even though she’s about as graceful as bowlegged cat), fences and can sing?” he asked, curiously. “Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if she shows up for the next meeting, permission slip and all.” He gave Lucian a friendly grin with the last part. “Just don’t hold it against her too much if she creams you,” he joked lightly. Dimitri hoped that Lucian didn’t feel too weird about finding out from him that Clara fenced.

“I’m sure you’re probably right and she just got too busy to sign up. Maybe you should ask her about it the next time you see her,” Dimitri suggested. “I’m sure its just a simple oversight man. Just wait…she’ll be here,” he assured Lucian. She’ll be here even if I have to nag her into it Mitri thought to himself still smiling friendly at Lucian.

OOC: My apologies; for some reason I was thinking that the Quidditch rosters were posted where all students can see them as opposed to the common rooms. I put up a post on the Pitch under the Pecari practice explaining how he knew she had made the team. Hopefully I didn't mess up any plans you had for Clara. BIC:

Lucian was a bit taken aback when Dimitri asked how he knew Clara was playing Quidditch. He had mentioned it without thinking about it, and then realized she must have been keeping it relatively secret. “I happened to be passing by the Pitch the day they had a practice scheduled. I just took a chance hoping the Pitch would be free, and I happened to see Clara running through some kind of obstacle course. I must admit that it surprised me.” He thought back to the time he helped Clara with her flying as Dimitri described one of her accidents. “I actually helped her with flying. I brought her a helmet.” Lucian laughed a little bit and shook his head. “She seems to have improved, though, knowing she is playing Quidditch worries me a bit. I wouldn’t want to see her get hurt.”

Lucian nodded once more in understanding as Dimitri explained reasons as to why Clara did not mention that she fenced. “Yeah, she mentioned something about her mother once, but I did not push the subject.” He continued listening, and raised an eyebrow once more when he heard the list of hobbies Clara participated in. “She plays piano? I play piano and drums. I never knew she went horseback riding and can speak a different language…let alone two….and she sings? Ballet?” Honestly, Lucian started to wonder if he really knew Clara at all.

“I don’t know about that,” Lucian said smugly, in response to Clara beating him at fencing, “but I do like a challenge.” Dimitri continued on as though he was trying to reassure Lucian. “Yeah, you’re right, she will probably be here. Probably just an oversight.” He really would have to bring it up the next time he got a chance to hang out with Clara.

OOC: No need to worry. You have not ruined any plans that I may have had for her. I was equally surprised to discover that the roosters aren’t placed out in public so its no big deal.

BIC:

Dimitri watched Lucian curiously as his eyebrow raised on the mention of Clara’s hobbies. He was fairly certain that she would have said something about them by now, but was surprised to discover that she had not. “I wonder why she didn’t tell you,” he mused aloud. He felt bad about being the one to spill the proverbial beans as it were. “Look man, I’m sorry if I said anything that upset you. I just thought that she might have mentioned all that already. I mean, you know as well as I do just how talkative she is.” He grinned sheepishly as he tried to figure out if he really had done any damage as far as the situation went. He didn’t think Lucian was angry (per say), but he was fairly certain that he wasn’t all that pleased about it which made him feel bad since he was the cause of it. He really didn’t know what to say about it so he didn’t. He was rather impressed though that Lucian played piano as well on top of the drums. He had always wanted to play the drums, but his mother wouldn’t allow it due to his baby brother. She didn’t seem to mind his playing the Lyre though. He didn’t quite understand the logic, but he left it alone.

He grinned at the smug look on Lucian’s face when he mentioned that Clara might be able to beat him. He figured if nothing else she would be a good challenge for him even if she didn’t beat him. Dimitri had no doubts though that she probably could whip him. He smartly kept that thought to himself. “I agree she’ll be quite a challenge if nothing else,” he agreed. He nodded at Lucian’s comments. ‘I’m sure it was totally just an oversight. It’s not like her to know that you started a club like this one and not be the first one to sign up unless she was like super distracted or something. I’m sure its no big deal,” he tried again to reassure the older boy, but he didn’t quite feel like it was really working. He just hoped that when the two of them talked she could make him understand what happened.
