“The final stop on our route will Gunther the inferus. He may not be the prettiest portrait,” she explained, before they were within earshot of the image, “But as he is the guardian of our house and has served Crotalus very faithfully. It will behove you to treat him with politeness and respect. The password for this month,” she added, as they reached Gunther, who shuffled into his frame, groaning in what she felt was his most friendly and curious tone of voice, “is Niffler.” The portrait swung open obligingly and she led the group into a warm room, decorated in rich reds with a number of comfy chairs and sofas.“Welcome. I am Deputy Headmistress Skies but in class, and in general, you may address me as Professor,” she explained. The idea of having the deputy head watching over them was possibly intimidating but Selina was a kind looking figure, with blonde hair and smiling blue eyes. Her manner, unless crossed, was generally warm and gentle.
“This is the Crotalus Common Room, your home for the next seven years. Its location and password are strict secrets known only to members of the house, and there will be punishments for sharing them. You may come from a variety of backgrounds but you all have to live together, and therefore I expect you to treat each other with dignity and respect.” Inheriting Crotalus had not been quite the headache she had been led to believe it might be by Amelia but that was either because she was lucky or the warning was working. Either way, she saw no reason to start skipping it.
“Your prefects are Eleanor Vandenburg, Virginia Bellrose and Effie Arbon. You may take your concerns to them or bring them to me. Crotalus currently lacks a Quidditch team but anyone interested in changing that should speak with me or Coach Olivers.
“Curfew, by which you must be back in the Commons, is ten pm. The stairs on the left lead to the boys’ dormitories and those on the right to the girls’. You are not permitted in rooms belonging to the opposite sex and there are counter measures in place should you try,” anyone heading up the wrong stairs would find themselves forcibly expelled by the corridor.
“Are there any questions?” she asked.
