Head of House Speech by DH Skies
Deputy Headmistress Skies led the members of Crotalus House through the corridors, pointing out useful landmarks for the new first years to navigate by in order to get themselves back down to breakfast in the morning.“We are now nearing Crotalus House,” she announced, as they rounded a corner, “Which is guarded by a portrait, known as Gunther the Inferus. I caution you to treat him politely and with respect, as he controls whether or not you are able to access your Common Room.” The portrait was rather hideous and perhaps had limited sensitivity or understanding of human language but Selina reasoned it was better to be on the safe side.
“The password for this month,” she explained, as they came up to Gunther, “will be Dragon's Blood.” The portrait obligingly swung open, admitting the group to the plush Common Room, which was home to a cosy array of chairs and settees in red, trimmed with silver brocade.
“Welcome to Crotalus House. As you may have gathered, I am Deputy Headmistress Skies, though you may simply address me as 'Profesor Skies' or 'Professor.' This is your new home, and will be so for the next seven years. You are not expected to like everyone you meet, however you are expected to be polite and courteous, treating others how you would wish to be treated. If you fail to live up to this, you are likely to make the next seven years unpleasant for yourself as much as for anyone else.
“Your house prefects are Heaven Baird, Effie Arbon and Virginia Bellrose. You may approach them with questions or concerns, or you may bring those to me. We currently do not have a Quidditch Captain and so I will be posting sign ups and running tryouts next weekend. Anyone is welcome to join the team, regardless of age or experience, so look out for the notice.” Quidditch had, in general, been up and down over the last few years. Last year it had been cancelled due to the staff's unforeseen absence, but Crotalus had been struggling for players before that.
“Curfew is at ten. You must be in the Common Room by then. You must also not reveal the location or password to this house to anyone outside of it. Does anyone have any questions?” she finished.
