This year, three of the four captains were graduating, so Coach Pierce's owl Boomer had a number of deliveries to make shortly before the end of the year. The owl was large and distinctive, so most students could recognized him, though he didn't often make personal deliveries to students who weren't Quidditch Captains. As such, the current recipient probably had a pretty good idea what the letter being delivered was about.
Captain Linus Macaulay, the letter attached to the owl's leg began.
Congratulations, you have been promoted to Quidditch Captain. Next year, you will be responsible for putting up sign-up sheets, holding try-outs, reserving the pitch for your team, and hosting practices throughout the year. You will, of course, have the help of an assistant captain. I recommend Cepheus Princeton.
Though Cepheus and Gareth had been part of the team for equally as long as one another, Amelia had gotten the sense that Cepheus was more of a leader than his roommate and had chosen accordingly among the two next oldest players on the team. That Seeker was a position that tended to attract more attention than Beater may have played a part in that impression, but it was the only impression she had to work with.
If you would rather another assist you, or don't feel you can perform these duties as Captain, please owl me so I can make sure the right people get their badges next year. You may tell your assistant of his or her promotion yourself. Congratulations and good luck.

A sixth year nearing the end of term already had a great deal on his mind - including the impending final year, contemplating college applications, anticipating the announcement of the Head Boy and Girl election results and wondering whether he would see his girlfriend at all over the summer - so when Linus looked up to see the Coach's familiar owl making a personal delivery, he wasn't altogether surprised that he'd temporarily forgotten the Crotalus Captain's imminent graduation. Naturally, as Linus was the existing assistant, he read the initial contents of the letter with no trepidation; promotion to captain was to be expected. He was more interested, however, in who the Coach had recommended as his replacement. While Linus equally esteemed both of the current fifth year players, he was drawn to favour Cepheus for a leadership role, and held contentment in the fact that Professor Pierce evidently shared his opinion on the matter.
As the large owl took flight once more, Linus looked up to see that Cepheus was also in the commonroom. Feeling that there was no time like the present, Linus stood and crossed the distance between them, only giving half his attention to pondering whether the Coach wished each of the captains luck at the close of the missive, or if this parting was reserved especially for her own House. "Congratulations, Cepheus," Linus said by way of greeting as he approached his Housemate. "You're officially the new Assistant Captain for the Crotalus Quidditch team." He was keen to offer the occasion all the pomp and circumstance it deserved.
Admittedly, being in charge of the team would not be the dream Linus had naively imagined, considering Crotalus had not enjoyed much success in the sport in recent years. He and Cepheus would have their work cut out to find and train a team worthy of competing for the championship cup. Their game against Teppenpaw this year had been nothing short of embarrassing.
The common room was usually a place of comfort to Cepheus and he preferred studying here rather than the library. Things were wrapping up for the school year and he was glad. His fifth year had been plagued with embarrassing losses, complications with his betrothed and a confrontation with Theresa. But now he had an unofficial girlfriend who was only his girlfriend in private and his friend in public. Things were complicated, but Cepheus rather liked where the chips were falling currently.
He had just entered the common room after spending some time in the MARS sports room. Cepheus had given up on battling his wounded pride and had decided it would be easier to think of getting revenge on the Teppenpaws by completely obliterating them in the next match if they did happen to face off. Leo stopped him and asked him a question about the carriage ride at the end of the year. Cepheus assured him quickly that it was all taken care of and was on his way to head up the stairs when Linus approached.
Cepheus was struck by the unexpected greeting and an unbidden hope rose in his chest. It was clear that Linus was going to be the next Quidditch captain and between himself and Gareth, Cepheus hadn't been confident with who Linus was going to choose as the Assistant. The news Linus relayed was more than satisfactory. Ceph was on his way to fulfilling his dream of being both Head Boy and the Quidditch captain by his seventh year. "Thank you," he said. He honestly hoped they would do better than they had this year. "I'd shake your hand, but I just got back from practise. I look forward to working with you." And he really did. Cepheus could respect Linus though he didn't know much about him outside of the pitch and the common room. They would have more of an opportunity to get to know each other next year. "If you'll excuse me, I'm going to shower off."
Cepheus escaped to the showers and could not suppress his joy any longer. He was tempted to dance around the washroom, but he was afraid of someone coming in. "Yes!" he exclaimed before turning the water on to shower. Next year would be great and Cepheus couldn't keep himself from hoping for a real Crotalus win despite their poor performance the years before.
