After having been back at class for a week, Emrys decided that it would be time to try and contact Charlotte to see if she would want to actually take him up on that duet or not. He felt uncomfortable taking her aside after class as she seemed to be rather shy and might not appreciate that, so he set about writing a letter to her to be delivered to her common room. He took out a full sheet of parchment paper, uncreased and unblemished. The kind that his grandfather had bought him for correspondence home, along with the stick of dark blue wax (for his House color) and embellished L stamp (for his last name) that his grandfather had purchased along with the paper. As much as he and his grandfather did not get along at times, Emrys would not discount that the man did love him in his own way and tried to care for him in ways that he thought was most suited to child rearing- as he thought his son and daughter-in-law did not raise Emrys right, he saw it as his duty to set Emrys on the correct path. These practices were generally unorthodox, but Emrys never really gave that much thought as most of his family had interesting ways to take care of their children. Besides, everything his parents and grandparents did was out of love and concern for his well being.
Dear Miss Charlotte Spencer, he did hope that she would get a kick out of that. His grandfather had taught him how to write a proper letter as if he were in his day, so Emrys thought that when talking to someone who was shy and a little bit proper like Charlotte, then acting old fashioned might please and then provide the opportunity for her to open up. I do hope that your break went well and that you had ample time to practice your music. By now you must know the reason for this letter. I was writing to inquire whether or not I might take you up on the agreement to play a duet with me. Please let me know when you would like to play our duet. Sincerly yours, Emrys Lucan
He hoped that letter would both entertain and get his point across, and satisfied with it, he folded it, stuck it in an envelope and then sealed it closed with wax. There. Now, to wait for her response.

Since coming back to Sonora, Charlotte had wondered about the duet she had promised to do with Emrys. She was unsure of how to go about asking him and very nearly convinced herself he had forgotten. She was used to wizards taking the initiative and when a week passed, she assumed he had simply forgotten. It was disappointing, of course, but she tried not to think about it too much. It would have been embarrassing to send an owl herself and realise only then that he had forgotten. It was safer to keep quiet about it.
Charlotte had told her older brother that she had made one friend her first term; it was quite a feat for her. Adam had seemed to believe her, but she knew he did hold some doubt. He had never seen her eat with him or anything and, if Charlotte was being honest, she wasn't certain if Emrys considered her a friend as well. It was a bit disheartening, not knowing who one's friends were.
She was sitting in her dorm room where it was quiet and empty for the time being. She had found she did not enjoy sharing a room with a stranger. At the very least she only had one to worry about and not two like her brother. Charlotte was catching up on her reading and working on curling her hair manually when a tap on the window surprised her. She assumed the owl was for Eleanor as she did not recognise it, but she opened the window anyway to let the owl in and drop off its letter.
To her greater surprise, the owl came to her and dropped the letter in front of her. She picked it up and looked at the seal. L. It was blue as well and she fancied it to be a letter from her aunt or uncle, but she doubted it. The Princeton seal was much more intricate and the colour was a bit lighter.
Charlotte broke the seal and opened it, her blue eyes widening in delight at the first line. Emrys certainly knew how to pen a letter and she found herself smiling. He hadn't forgotten. She went quickly to her desk and the owl followed after, cooing as if asking for treats. She set out a handful of crumbs for it to peck at and wrote a reply in a neat script. She had a set of stationery just for letters that she had received that Christmas. Charlotte loved sending and receiving letters, but until recently she had only her family to send letters to and receive them from.
Mr Lucan, I hope this letter finds you well. I have not forgotten our agreement last term and would be delighted to play a duet with you. Would next Saturday be acceptable? Sincerely yours, Charlotte Spencer
Charlotte would let him choose a time. She did not have such an official seal as Emrys had so she simply folded it and held it closed with a bit of tape. That would have to do. After a thought, she wrote his name on the front and signed the folded bit of the letter with her initials in curly letters: CS.
With that, she gave it back to the owl and watched it take off with it. She smiled. Not only had she made a friend, or so she hoped, she had made a proper one that her mum would not find fault with.

When Emrys recieved the owl back, he was very excited. It came a lot sooner than he thought it would and was very pleased to read that she liked the idea as much as he did. He took out another set of paper and set about with writing a reply immediately.
Miss Charlotte Spencer, I am quite well, thank you. And better now that a time has been proposed. Next Saturday would, indeed, be acceptable. Perhaps, if I may be so bold, I might endeavour to request your company in the library afterwards? We could study for our next test or work on homework. I shall wait for your reply with much enthusiasm and am, Your friend, Emrys Lucan
He hoped that he hadn't frightened her with asking her to study with him in the library, or calling himself her friend. But he was certain that they were, her letter had been quite cordial, and he knew his grandfather would almost certainly approve of Charlotte- she seemed to be a proper young lady with whom he shared interests with. He smiled and sent the owl off with his letter.

As soon as Emrys sent the letter off and put away his wax and stamp, he realized with dismay that he had forgotten to propose a time. He shook his head, wondering what Charlotte would think. He already felt a little inadequate after having seen what her handwriting looked like. He'd expected it to be better than his- most anyone's would be. He'd tried extra hard when writing her letter and the result had not been that bad. He actually thought his handwriting had looked good. But he'd really liked Charlotte's and the way that she'd folded over the top and put her initials there instead of a seal. He assumed that she didn't have one which was fine. His grandmother didn't have one either, she simply used his grandfather's when conducting official business while his grandfather used his for every letter he sent out.
Emrys took out his wax and stamp again and wrote a shorter note in the same format as his two previous ones, explaining his mistake. I do hope you forgive me, he wrote, but I was too eager in my response. I forgot to include a time. Would after lunch be satisfactory? Maybe around 2? That would leave time for the library after dinner if she thought that sounded like a good idea. He signed the letter, folded it, and stamped it, and then rushed off to find another owl to send Charlotte this letter.
OOC: After sending it I realized that I hadn't suggested a time, so he did write the dear and sincerely bits but I just wanted to send this out quickly so that you had them both while writing your reply!
In the midst of removing the warmed rollers from her hair and examining each blonde curl in the mirror, the owl returned and Charlotte nearly dropped one in excitement. She had left the window open in hopes of the owl’s swift return and she had not been disappointed. There were even two letters with this owl. With a quarter of the rollers still left in her hair, she took the letter from the owl, broke the seal and read his note eagerly. The first and slightly longer letter invited her to study with him and solidified their friendship – for which she found much reason to celebrate over – and the second indicated a time. Charlotte used most of her Saturdays either in the company of her brother or studying alone in her room. She had all the time in the world for Emrys, except meal times. Charlotte went back to her desk and penned a reply:
Mr Lucan, Two in the afternoon is perfect lovely satisfactory. I shall look forward to the study session. The study session sounds lovely as well. I am completely free. I do have loads of homework to do on Saturdays. Charlotte wasn’t even finished with the letter and already it looked improper. Her mother would have lectured her for not presenting a crisp, fresh and neat letter. She used the scrap sheet of stationery instead to think on what she wanted to say. Once she had decided on what to write, she began again on a fresh sheet of stationery.
Mr Lucan, Two in the afternoon is acceptable as is the study session which you suggested. I shall look forward to next Saturday. Your friend, Charlotte Spencer
Emrys ought to have no doubts of their friendship now, she hoped, and she sealed the letter, signing it with her initials as before, and gave it to the owl to deliver. She hoped her short note didn’t deter Emrys from writing to her again. Her mother had told her never to let one know one’s truest feelings. For Charlotte, she did not want Emrys to know just how much she looked forward to their meeting and how desperately she wanted it to go well. As she turned back to the mirror, she thought perhaps she ought to curl her hair for the occasion. The curls were turning out rather well.
Saturday shall be full of muted excitement and enthusiasm!

Emrys smiled when he got again a prompt response. He especially liked the part when Charlotte signed the letter "your friend". After sitting down to write a reply to her, he decided he would write home to inform everyone that yes indeed, Emrys Lucan was capable of making a nice friend from, what would please his grandfather the most, what seemed to be an exceptionally proper background. As he pulled out his letter writing supplies, he decided that a quick note confirming his excitement without totally freaking her out too would be most the most respectable course of action and so sat down and wrote painstakingly slow so that his writing would be as legible as the other times, a quick note of agreement.
Miss Charlotte Spencer, I will see you Saturday at two then. I too look forward to our meeting.
He paused his letter there, wondering if he should continue writing something else or if he should end it and sign, but he wasn't sure how to sign so instead he decided to continue.
My dear friend, I do hope that your day has been going well and that my letters have not disrupted your schedule. If so, I do apologize. If not, I would be glad to hear how it has gone. Mine has mostly been composed of sitting around and reading some books that my grandfather gave to me for Christmas. I have also completed the assignments for tomorrow, happy though I am that they are finished, I am also somewhat melancholy as it means I have not much else to do other than write with you and read. Though do not take me wrong, I am grateful for your correspondence. My friend if you find me to be too informal or, likewise, too formal, say the words and I shall do my best to make sure you are comfortable with the level of friendship that I write to you with.
There, he smiled satisfactorily. He hoped that last line or two was appropriate but he desperately wanted Charlotte to know that he would never do anything to put her outside of her comfort zone. He realized that it might though and that his letter might have been a bit too fresh. But it was too late. He had already written it and he could start over again but he was so proud of the way it looked and the words that he had chosen- he was a little afraid that he wouldn't get the next letter to look this appealing to the eye given his nasty habit of usually mushing all his words up together. Perhaps once he and Charlotte got better acquainted she could help him to work on his penmanship so that handwriting like he used in letters to her would become more natural and not forced. He wrote a closing, signed the letter, and sent it off. He then sat down and began to compose another letter to his grandfather.
OOC: When would you like to start the Saturday thread? I have no preference and am content to write letters for awhile or keep up the letter writing correspondence on this thread through the Saturday meeting if Charlotte/you would like. Just let me know!

We can act as though their correspondence went on for some time, but feel free to begin the Saturday thread whenever you like. Charlotte would not have opened up much, but she would have been delighted with their correspondence.
