A question (tag Talitha) by Adam Brockert

Adam had never in his life been so anxious about anything, which was saying something, because he had barely had an unanxious moment since he'd come to Sonora. This was worse than CATS had been or RATS coming up because Adam had never really worried that he'd fail those, just that he wouldn't get all Os (which he hadn't).

Today he was going to ask Talitha out.

If she said no, Adam didn't know what he'd do, quite literally. Well, he'd feel emotionally devastated and utterly humiliated but he wasn't sure how he'd cope with those feelings.

But he couldn't not ask her out either and he really couldn't put it off any longer. It was his last year and almost midterm. If Adam didn't ask her now , he'd never have the chance once he graduated...and he couldn't imagine finding anyone better in college either.

He waited for a time when nobody else was around. Once he spotted the girl in question, Adam nervously approached her. "Hey, Talitha, can I um, talk to you?" He sat on the couch and took a deep breath. "Um, I really like you. W-would you like to be my girlfriend?" Oh, Merlin, please let her say yes. Adam thought silently. His stomach was in knots waiting for her reply.

Another question by Talitha Cumni

Talitha smiled as she proofread her letter to Hyana. She had transferred to another school during their second year. They’d been able to visit each other’s home over the summers, but it seemed the visits were way too short. When she moved from Sonora, it felt as if she’d lost a part of herself, they’d grown so close. Like Oliver, Lutece, and Jae, Hyana was one of her very best friends. It was so awesome the way the two of them could pick up where they’d left off now matter how long the time apart was.

Hyana had invited her to her school in Colorado and Talitha immediately owled her parents for permission. After a bit of begging to be away from them for the first holiday she could spend with them for two years and promising she would go home for at least the second week of her break, they’d consented. The second they let her know the trip was a go, she’d written to Hyana. Now, all she had to do was to convince Owl that it wanted to take off on another long flight after only a short rest to deliver it for her.

She half ran from the gardens, where she’d been writing to tell her friend the good news on her way to her room in Crotalus where Owl was undoubtedly perched, thinking he was going to get a good long nap. She was crossing the common room when Adam’s voice stopped her. He looked excited and very nervous about something, so Talitha decided the letter could wait a few minutes more and joined him on the couch.

He mentioned he liked her, no surprise there. It had been obvious for a long time. Truth was, Talitha liked him to, very much. Sure, he wasn’t the most popular guy in the school, but that wasn’t something that Talitha cared about very much. He was brilliant and artistic and quirky and a bit more than a little cute. He had a good heart. His greatest flaw was that Adam didn’t realize how truly special Adam was. He was improving though, at least when they were together, his self esteem seemed to improve a notch or two. Adam had grown very dear to her, even though she’d been gone herself for a while.

What really made her brown eyes widen and her mouth to form a small O of astonishment, was when he asked her if she wanted to become his girlfriend! Honestly, she had to admire the courage that took from a guy like Adam. No wonder he looked as though he was going to burst.

“Wow, ah, Adam.” Talitha was at a loss for words, which anyone could say was a rare thing for her. Part of her wanted to cry out “Yes!”. A couple of years ago, she would have, but she was a little more grown up now and was well aware this was a relationship that would soon become long distance as Adam graduated the end of next term. But there was no voice of reason screaming “No!” in her head or heart at the moment either. “I don’t know what to say… I really like you too.”

She reached for Adam’s hands with her own and felt the electric charge touching them always produced. “But you’re going away soon. You’ll meet other girls at college and I still have two years here myself, then college or apprenticeship too. Are you really sure you want this?” She reached up and cupped Adam’s cheek with one hand. If he said yes, she knew she couldn’t deny him.

An answer by Adam

Oh okay, she hadn't said no. That...was a start. She said she really liked him too. That...was great. Adam had really been pretty much expecting a flat out no or the "Let's just be friends" speech. He certainly didn't expect that she would say she really liked him. Adam didn't think he was the type girls went for at all. Saul was the type girls seemed to go for, something he'd never understand as long as he lived. Not because he thought he was necessarily better, just revolting in a different way. He pretty much expected to be turned down now, not meet anyone in college either, (Marshall hadn't and he was better than Adam was despite the drinking) and end up eventually being coerced by his great-grandfather into marrying some proper pureblood princess who only wanted Adam for his money and didn't care about him as a person. The fact that Talitha really liked him too was amazing.

But Talitha hadn't given him a flat out yes either. Instead she'd asked him a question in return. Why did Crotali have to be so dratted cautious all the time? Adam knew he was one of the worst in that respect and indeed, it was probably that that had landed him here rather than Aladren or Teppenpaw. (Of course, now Adam was glad to be in Crotalus with a room to himself and not in Aladren with Devian. Even when Geoff was here, it had been preferable to that.) Still to be on the receiving end of it at a moment when he was already so nervous...

“But you’re going away soon. You’ll meet other girls at college and I still have two years here myself, then college or apprenticeship too. Are you really sure you want this?”

"Yes, of course I do." Adam replied, trying to ignore the melting feeling her taking his hands had caused and stay focused. He never would have put everything on the line like this if he didn't. "I would never risk feeling the anxiety and the potential to be hurt if I didn't. I-I really like you . I couldn't ever imagine feeling this way about anyone else." He went on. "I missed you so much last year." It wasn't just the preference of his very few other friends for other people (though Afton claimed she liked him the same, Adam wasn't sure he bought that.) It was Talitha . He felt a deeper connection to her than to anyone else and enjoyed being around her because she was her.

I missed you so much last year

Talitha’s heart did a little skip/thump. On impulse, she kissed Adam. It was just a little peck. Did that qualify as their first? Giggling self-consciously and blushing a bit, she used her thumb to rub the gloss she’d left on Adam’s mouth.

“I missed you too, as if you couldn’t tell.” Talitha thought about all the reasons it would be totally crazy to commit to him. He was graduating, he probably would meet other girls he had way more in common with. Their life paths were likely to lead in different directions after college. But, Now was important too and the future was so far away.

What about family? Talitha was fairly certain her folks would approve once they got to know him. She would love it if he would visit and learn some of her culture. She was sure Adam would be fascinated to meet the wand makers of her community and learn their unique perspective of the Craft. But what about his?

She’d never really gotten to know his older sister, but knew she adored Adam and was very protective of him. Chelsea was about as different from her brother as night and day and could be trouble. What of his parents? She had no worries about her bloodline. She was Pure, even though it wasn’t a badge of honor to her or her folks like it was for other families. It just was. But what about race and spirituality? How bigoted were they? Granted, going together wasn’t being engaged, but parents could be a pain if they didn’t approve of the girlfriend.

Talitha mentally shook herself. Why over think this and ruin it for the both of them. Couldn’t she ever live in the moment without analyzing every little detail? What about all the wonderful feelings swirling around inside of her now? What about how soft his lips felt when they touched hers?

“Adam, it’s just…I mean…You are so…We could…” Talitha waved her hands in frustration. She was rarely tongue tied and she despised it when she was. There was nothing to do but laugh at herself. “I guess what I’m trying to say is, ‘Yes.’! Yes, I really, really would love to be your girlfriend!”

Shocked by Adam

Adam's face flushed as Talitha kissed him. It wasn't a long kiss or anything, but it was something , and people didn't go around kissing just anyone. That had to be good, right?

The fact that she missed him too made it even better. Not that Adam would have wanted her to like be suffering or anything because she wasn't around him (which he sort of had been), but it was just plain nice to be missed. Especially when Adam didn't really think he mattered that much to anyone else. Kaylie had Ian, Briony had Saul, Marshall had... well, booze, he guessed. That was what his cousin seemed to like best. So to have been missed by Talitha made Adam feel sort of like he was important to someone.

Especially when he had really missed her. Adam gave her a hug. "Last year was awful," he murmured before letting her go. He had been pretty lonely. It wasn't like there were many other people who liked Adam much all. There were a few people who were less hostile than others but it wasn't like he was close to any of them...and it wouldn't have probably mattered that much if he was because he really just wanted to be with Talitha anyway.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is, ‘Yes.’! Yes, I really, really would love to be your girlfriend!”

Adam's eyes widened in shock. He still really hadn't been expecting Talitha to say yes. Adam was well, Adam . He was unpopular, he was nerdy, he lacked social skills.

He was standing there like an idiot. Not quite sure what to say, Adam walked over and kissed her. A long, slow kiss that was more than a peck this time. "Thank you," he whispered.

Okay, that was probably a stupid thing to say. Thank you was what one said when they got Christmas presents or something. Why did he have to be such a freak? Quickly, he looked for something else to talk about. "So, um," Adam started out, "What are you doing for midterm? Are your parents going to that parent's night thing?" He asked. His dad was coming but his mom wasn't. The night itself was not something Adam was really looking forward to. It meant actually having to spend extended time with Chelsea. Adam may have had to eat meals with her at home but he sure didn't at school and it wasn't something he wanted to resume doing any time soon.
