Owl to Prof. Powell by Saul Pierce

It was a pity really, that Simon was related to Saul. Simon would have made a good debate moderator. He was neither a Head of House, nor an alumni, so he had no real House affiliation of his own, and he was politically active so he understood the importance of a good candidate debate. He didn't have enough contact with students to have any real favorites, and he was involved enough with the staff that he knew what went into being a good Head Boy at Sonora.

Unfortunately, because of Saul, Simon's impartiality was compromised and he was very definitely a Pecari by affiliation if not by personal experience. He cheered for the Pecari Team at games (Saul was captain; his cousin didn't have a choice in the matter). Simon even paid attention to the House Points and traded jibes with Mimms when Pecari was doing particularly well or poor.

So even aside from the obvious family bias Simon was out.

Of the others without obvious House affiliations, Schmitt and Baer were too new, Huntley's practical jokes pegged him as a Pecari in spirit if not in name, a librarian might as well have taken out an ad that he had Aladren sympathies, Fox was busy with her renewed career (Saul had a hard enough time tracking her down to reserve the Pitch for practices), and Wolfe - well, Saul didn't feel comfortable dragging him out of the Hospital Wing when nobody was in immediate threat of injury. Besides which, what kind of political statement was that, to get a Healer to run a debate? It was like advertising he was afraid of bloodshed, which was the farthest thing from the truth.

So Saul had resigned himself to getting a House biased judge.

He thought Flatt might be the most impartial of all the professors, even as Head of Aladren, since he seemed to hate everyone equally (though Saul secretly thought Flatt might secretly like him - or at least dislike him less than his disliked most of the students), but when he got only three responses from people interested in the debates, the choice was made for him.

Afton was a Teppenpaw. Geoff Layne was an Aladren. Saul himself was a Pecari. So that left Crotalus. And that meant Saul's moderator of choice ought to have a Crotalus bias. The most obvious representative was the Head of House.

So even though Saul had never taken Ancient Runes (it was supposed to be hard, and involve a lot of writing, which meant the subject was definitely NOT in Saul's line of interests) and he didn't think he'd ever even spoken directly to her, shortly after midterm, Saul was sending an owl to Professor Sadi Powell.

Professor Powell,
he dictated to his Quick Quotes Quill, since that wrote far more legibly than he could ever hope to.

My name is Saul Pierce. You've probably seen my posters, so it won't surprise you to hear I'm running for Head Boy this year. I'm organizing a Head Girl-Head Boy debate this Saturday. So far I've had three people say they were interested in participating: Geoff Layne, Afton Stokes, and me.

Since none of us are Crotali, I thought you would probably be more impartial than most other people in the school. Would you be willing to help us out? I can handle most of the organization and stuff, but I'd be no good at keeping us on topic and seeing that everyone got a chance to talk and moving us onto the next topic, and all that kind of thing, once the debates start. I'm thinking we'll all start with a basic opening statement saying why we think we'd make a good Head Boy or Girl, and then we'd open the floor to questions from either the audience, or yourself, or both.

Since it's hardly fair to have me and Geoff debate each other and leave Afton all by herself, all three of us will debate all at once, so she has a chance to let people know her views on stuff. I guess that's it. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks!
Saul

To Saul: Answering your call by Professor Powell

The unexpected letter provided a fairly welcome respite from marking sixth year runes translations. Sadi read the missive with interest before penning a reply.

Saul Pierce,

I would be pleased to oversee your debate. Please let me know your proposed time and venue as soon as possible, so I can fit you into my schedule.

S Powell

Although tempted, Sadi held back from including any warnings about obtaining permission for using whichever room, and was interested to know which population would form the audience that was mentioned. Yet despite the inquisitive and excited nature Saul demonstrated in the prefects meeting earlier in the year, he was demonstrating good leadership skills this year in various activities and obviously had a great deal of enthusiasm to organise his campaign. Therefore Sadi felt it appropriate to leave him to his own devices.

Yet Sadi was disappointed there were no students from Crotalus House interested in taking part in the debate. Perhaps she would talk to some of the sixth years and find out whether they had any interest in representing the school. Or maybe not; she didn't want to interfere with their plans. Silently contemplating this, she tied her reply to the patiently waiting owl. Having accepted a treat, the bird then took off, and Sadi returned to her marking.
