NOTICE: BAND CALL by Josh Santoro

A new notice had gone up onto all of the house boards thanks to all of the Santoro children (and much more thanks to Bella's threats). If anyone were to look on their House Noticeboards, a lovely vibrant Pink parchment with large blue letters in perfectly neat handwriting could be found. The Notice read:

Fellow Sonorians!

My name is Bella Santoro, a fourth year here at Sonora and I'm looking for recruiting a band. I play the guitar as well as sing vocals. Anyone who can sing or play an instrument is welcomed to sign-up and auditions will be held this coming Saturday in Cascade Hall after Lunch. Hope to see you all there!

Leo Idoya III

Hmm... by Leo Idoya III

As always, Leo woke up early. Too early, actually. He had Mercedes to blame for that--his younger sister, who would probably be starting at Sonora next year if their mother had any say in the decision, was a perpetual madrugador, and always woke up before the sun rose. And, because she'd apparently been more upset than Leo'd been told about her favorite brother's absence over the last term, she'd taken it upon herself to spend as much time as possible with Leo over the summer. That meant, much to his dismay, that she came bouncing into his room around 5:30 every morning, already horrifically awake. If he didn't enjoy spending time with her as much as she did, he probably would've jinxed her, and had come close several times.

At Sonora, however, he had come to be somewhat grateful for her early-bird tendencies. It was nice to have a few hours of relative silence before his peers woke up, especially on weekends. No one to compete with for the showers, no one to be noisy and interrupt his antemeridian meditations...

That was why, on the first Saturday of term, Leonardo Sabino Idoya III found himself descending the stairs into the Crotalus common room, a textbook tucked under his arm and an unwonted smile on his face. In his good mood, he remembered his friend from last year--Gray--and realized that he hadn't actually done more than pass her in the hall yet this semester. He'd have to track her down over the weekend.

He was contemplating ways of finding her when something caught his eye--a glaring sheet of pink parchment pinned up on the noticeboard. He curled his lip in distaste at the garish color, but after a few moments of hemming and hawing, decided that there was no harm in seeing what was advertised.

He was grateful for the curiosity as soon as he began reading. A band! He bit his lip, the only outward sign of his inner excitement. Aside from his sister and mother, music was what he had missed most last year--there was a surprising (and horrifying) lack of it at Sonora. And now, this Santoro girl--the older sister of his roommate Josh, Leo knew--was starting a band!

Quickly he fumbled out his self-inking quill and signed below the blue paragraph: Leonardo Idoya, guitar, piano, vocals (tenor). While it was unlikely she'd need--or be able to find--a piano, which was his favorite, Leo had been taking private guitar lessons since he was seven, and enjoyed singing well enough.

He eyed his contribution, nodded, and slipped the quill back into his pockets, before taking up a seat beside the window to study and think of ways to get hold of Gray.\n\n

Oliver Abbott

A band? Really? by Oliver Abbott

Oliver had managed to sleep most of the night, which was an improvement. He always had trouble sleeping in a new place, and Sonora was no different. Luckily, there was a lot to take in being at a magic school for the first time, which had the bonus of tiring Oliver out, otherwise he doubted he would have slept at all.

This morning when he awoke for the second time the sun was peeking around the drapes. Yawning heavily, Oliver crawled out of bed, quietly, so he didn’t disturb his roommates. He pulled on a set of dark red robes and retrieved his glasses from the nightstand. Intending to write a letter to his sister, he also took up some parchment and a fountain pen - his writing was near illegible if he wrote with a quill – and headed down to the common room.

Blinking as his eyes adjusted to the light, Oliver did a double take as he saw someone else in the commons. He had expected everyone else to still be asleep at this time on a Saturday.

“Hi,” Oliver said to the boy. He didn’t want to disturb him, though, so left it at that. He looked round the room to select somewhere to sit, and headed over to one of the corner tables. On his way there, though, something bright pink pinned on the notice board caught his eye. After a silent battle with himself that lasted only a couple of seconds, curiosity got the better of Oliver and he ambled over to take a look.

The notice told him that someone called Bella was starting a band. Oliver wondered what sort of band. If it was the sort of rock band that Julian liked listening to, then Oliver wasn’t interested. Then again, if it was like the bands that played in the lounge at home, or the sort that guests sometimes brought for weddings, then that would be okay. They almost always had someone playing violin. Knowing that he wouldn’t find out whether he would be wanted or not unless he signed up, Oliver stuffed the parchment under the crook of his arm, and added his name to the other on the list.

Oliver Abbott – piano, violin, vocals (alto)

He had only added alto because Leonardo Idoya had put that he was a tenor. Oliver’s voice hadn’t broken, and he was hoping it wouldn’t do so for a while yet, because he was enjoying being junior soloist, and he couldn’t be a junior singer once his voice had broken.

Having signed up, Oliver continued for the table, and took his seat. He laid the parchment out in front of him, and glanced up again at the other boy, wondering if he was Leonardo Idoya that had already signed up on the band list.
