Letter for Catherine Raines by Jordanna Howard

OOC: My apologies if the html tags don’t work.

On a desk in the middle of the common room, an envelope was clearly addressed to one Catherine Raines in flowery blue handwriting. The writer, Jordanna Howard, (as it stated on the envelope) had finished the letter on her Thursday lunch break, not long after she had received the message she had been awaiting from home. The girl had written it as soon as possible before heading to Transfiguration, so that Catherine would have as much time as possible to reply. It was only polite, after all.

Dear Catherine,

Please excuse me for not giving you this message personally. I only just received word from home during lunch, and wanted to get the message to you right away without arriving late to Professor Marlowe’s class.

I'm writing this letter to you is to go over some things before our meeting with our Head of House in her office tomorrow night before dinner. Daddy has agreed to provide me with thirty galleons towards the party. Any decorations, food, or anything else we believe necessary for the party will have to go through him before he sends the package to Sonora in the first class post.

I thought that for decorations we would stay with the Crotalus theme of red and silver. I think that in this weather that cold beverages and food would be the best to serve. I expect that the final menu will be worked out when you, Professor Marlowe, and I work out how formal the party will be. Obviously I’ll be pushing for formal, because I really would love to wear nice dress robes again, but seeing as this is an open invitation for all first and second years, I’m not sure if she’ll go for it. I also saw some very pretty dress robes in the latest Witch Weekly, and I thought it would be cute if both you and I dressed in house colors.

I’m certain we will be able to reason with Professor Marlowe to get most of what we want. I’m sure you will be showing the same amount as enthusiasm as I. For now, I’ve got to go, so I’m sure I will see you sometime before our meeting Friday.

Sincerely,

Jordanna

Replying by Catherine Raines

Catherine rubbed her thumb and first finger over one edge of the envelope, scanning the blue writing on the front nervously. Even if it was really from Jordanna, she didn't think it was going to be anything she wanted to hear. If it wasn't from Jordanna - she'd never paid too much attention to her friend's handwriting, so it wouldn't take much of a forger to fool her - then reading it might cause all kinds of problems, political and social, and Catherine didn't want to deal with them. She felt enough like she was walking a tightrope already, between crazy roommates and moody roommates and Jordanna and her parents and Amelia -

And then she realized she was frowning, almost scowling. That would cause frown lines, which wouldn't improve her appearance. Looking the shrew wasn't conductive to making good impressions or good alliances. No one wanted more complications, but if they came, they came. There was no sense in ruining her already, in her opinion, lackluster face over them. Besides, Jordanna was her friend. If something seemed off about the letter, then Catherine would ask about it and deal with things then. There was no reason for her to be afraid to open a letter. Willing her hands not to shake, she opened and began to read it.

The party. Catherine made it to her dorm just before giving a sigh of relief. It was just about the party. She supposed Carey could have found out about the party, intercepted a real letter from Jordanna, and written another one that went completely against everything Jordanna wanted, but it didn't seem likely. Today probably wasn't the day Catherine's life was ruined. Sinking bonelessly onto her bed, she reread the letter, this time taking it more of what it said. She was not looking forward to the meeting with Marlowe - the Transfiguration professor probably had no more difficulty than she did when it came to recalling her various blunders in class - but she'd go, because she had to.

"Okay," she said under her breath, more to herself than to the empty room. "Okay." She found writing materials and a book to bear down on and began to compose a reply. She'd have to work fast, but she thought she could manage it. Sounding wildly enthusiastic and flowery on parchment was actually easier than doing it out-loud.

Dear Jordanna,

I'm so glad to hear that your father agreed. If we need more money for anything, I'm sure I can get my father to provide it. I've told him and my mother about our party, and they're both very pleased with us.

I agree about the decorations, because anything else would clash with what's already there. Silver works with most things, but all the red and silver together would look bad with anything else I can think of. The idea about our robes is brilliant, too - it'll make everything match, and it'll make it a little clearer that you and I are what good Crotali should be. I'm not sure how socialized Professor Marlowe is - I think she's English or something, so I don't know much about her family - but it would be wonderful to wear dress robes again, not to mention getting to do something with my hair.

I'm pretty sure most of the second years are from good families - I've heard of there being a Spindler and a St.Martin, and I think one of the Brockert boys. I don't really know much about the first years, but I think enough of the group overall will be our type for it to be reasonably formal. Mama could probably be convinced to send Daphne or one of the elves to help us with our robes and hair if we can swing a formal party. I can also ask Lorenzo to make formal invitations for everyone, too, just for the sake of making it feel elite.

I had another idea, too, but I want to run it by you before I mention it to Marlowe or anyone else. The first- and second-year groups aren't very big right now, so do you think it might be a good idea to make this an annual event? It might become a Crotalus tradition, and we would have been the ones to start it.

I'm running short on time myself, now, so I'll talk to you later.

Sincerely,

Catherine

A quick moment later, quick so she wouldn't have to think about it too much, the letter was folded and addressed and ready to be delivered. Keeping a careful eye on the door, Catherine moved from her bed to Jordanna's, propping the missive against the pillow, and immediately darted away, sighing from relief for the second time in one day. \n\n
