Quidditch Sign-ups by Jennifer Zucchero

In order to make that scenario an impossiblity, Jennifer had decided to start the process of getting another quidditch team together as soon as possible. It would be easier this year. Theoretically she would manage to find enough players to make a full team again with no major problems, since she had done it last year, and there were a few first years who she thought might sign up. And, since she hadn't completely screwed up with everything last year, she had stopped worrying about whether or not she was a suitable captain, which would probably be the most important out of everything that had happened. Now she just had to reassemble the troops.

So Jennifer made a stop at her common room before the feast to post her notice. After three years of learning to navigate the school, she had a feeling that, even with skipping the start of the feast, she would without a doubt be able to get back before too much had happened. After getting to the common room, she quickly hung up the piece of parchement with its short message and series of lines for names and positions, and then hurried to Cascade.

QUIDDITCH SIGN-UP
If you have any interest in playing for the Crotalus quidditch team this year, please sign your name, year, and desired position below. Tryouts, if necessary, will be held in about two weeks. If you normally play more than one position, note all of them, and if you don't know what position you would play or are unsure what quidditch is, feel free to come find me before tryouts and I'll try to help.

Signing up...again by Chrissy Mathers

Chrissy had been settling down the first few days back to Sonora. She seemed to have so much energy and had no idea with what to do with it. Not to mention, people who she had thought had left Sonora for good...were back. It was becoming quite a weird year and it had only been just a few days.

As she hopped down the stairs (probably not the best thing for her to do considering her body type) Chrissy made the last jump with a wide grin. She still couldn't get over the fact that they were fourth years. Teenagers. The idea that growing up was thrilling to Chrissy and she couldn't wait to escape the clutches of her mother permanently.

She walked by the notice board (something she did everyday and never took anything in for account) and noticed, for the first time, that Jennifer had posted the Quidditch Sign-ups. What good was having the Captain as a roommate if she didn't even give you warning? Chrissy grabbed a quill from off the nearest table, not caring if someone was using it and wrote her name down.

Worth a try... by Antares Lesath

Antares allowed her eyes to run fleetingly across the short message. She felt undecided as to whether she wanted to play yet - let alone sign up. But then, she supposed that was the curse of the first year. To dither in the background hoping not to upset anyone. Antares bit her lip thoughtfully, already having heard reports of the lengths people went to get into the in crowd. The in crowd, the word was bitter on her tongue - but enough to make her push all her worries roughly aside.

Digging in her bag, she pulled out a slightly ruffled quill and a leaking pot of ink. Lip curling slightly in disgust as the ink smeared on her fingers, she deftly opened it, dipping the quill in. In a quick, flowing handwriting she wrote:

Antares Lesath, First year, Beater

With a self-mocking smile she eyed the still wet ink, bundling both quill and ink haphazardly into her bag. Oh, wouldnt Mother be proud she thought snidely, her thoughts laced with bitter venom.\n\n

Entering the common room at ten minutes till nine was most likely not the activity of a proper Crotalus young lady, but Gwen figured that having one of her nervous spells would be worse, and she was somehow sure that being in the common room for long at a time would be enough to bring one on, now that Jordanna had returned to Sonora. They hadn't clashed yet, but she didn't trust the other blonde. Nicoletta was infinitely worse when it came to nastiness, but Jordanna was the leader. The common room and dorm were territory she and Jordanna were forced to share, and she wanted to avoid a confrontation over it as long as possible. She had spent her first full evening back alone at Avalon, staring vacantly at the walls and making the occasional stab at studying. On her way in, she glanced absently at the notice board, saw Jennifer's list, and froze.

The near-death experience one of the Pecari Chasers had had courtesy of her immediately sprang to mind. Close behind it was the fact that, in spite of it all, they had lost. Logically, though, that was just the luck of the draw. From what she had read about the game, Crotalus had played well. And...she liked it. She had a legitimate excuse to be around other people from her own House and something with a point to focus on. She also liked Jenny, after a fashion. The Zuccheros were important enough that Jen could have gotten away with snubbing her, but she hadn't.

It was seeing that a first year had signed up for her old position that made up her mind. She'd sign up, and if she was kicked off the team, well, that would be the end of it, and if not, well, then she'd play again. Either way, she would at least she'd get to have some fun with the looks on the faces of the Hens and Lila St.Martin. Morgaine's disapproval would be even more vigorous than theirs, but she somehow doubted her sister would confront her about it again. The benefits were, very slightly, outweighing the drawbacks.

Once she'd finished, she stood back a bit, decided her handwriting was both neat and legible and therefore in no need of translation, and then began making her way up the stairs, slipping into the dorm exactly one minute before nine.

Helena Layne

When she had first realized she and Geoff were in different Houses, Helena's reaction had been somewhere between shock and relief, with maybe a little more than she cared to admit to on the relieved side of things. Fond as she was of her brother, she had already decided that he was taking what their father had told him about looking out for her a little too seriously. If Geoff was constantly around, there was no doubt in Lena's mind that he'd give everyone he saw her speak to a hard time until she was left with no companions besides him and Anne.

Anne...Merlin, it had been two years since Helena had seen her, and the glimpse of her she'd caught at the Feast had made it pretty clear, if the tone of her letters hadn't, that she wasn't exactly the same old Anne that she remembered. She looked different. She dressed different. In her letters, she sounded different - all cynical and, though Helena tried to tell herself she was reading too much into what might not have been there to start with, like she had some kind of misanthropic grudge against the world. None of which was compatible with the nerdy, quirky older sister figure Helena had grown up with.

Of course, there was always the chance that she was completely off the mark, about both her brother and her friend. Geoff could be perfectly willing to let her live on her own without him smothering her at every turn, and Anne could just suck at writing letters. She had very little evidence to go on besides limited-scope observations, and that was no good for basing a firm opinion on. Experiences were more reliable, and she didn't have any of those in the areas she was worried about. Yet.

She had been working on a letter to her father, annoucing her placement in his own former House, but had found herself easily distracted. She loved him and her mother, but speaking to them about anything consequential was hard enough before one mixed in the difficulty of doing this on parchment. It felt like she was giving away too much, even if it was something anyone who cared to look at the school roster would know. Tapping the feather end of her quill against her knee, Helena stared around the common room as if looking for inspiration. Her eyes latched onto the notice board, a fixture of the room she had yet to really look at. She could use the time it took to cross the room and come back to figure out what to say to her parents.

The board still seemed pretty empty, but it was still very early in the year. One of the most noticeable announcements on it was the Quidditch tryouts sign-up list, apparently an early recruiting attempt by the captain. She read the short list of all-girl's names and bit her lip.

Quidditch was a family tradition. Part of the reason she suspected her parents hadn't tried to land Geoff a scholarship to one of the tiny pureblood academies was that so many of them used Quodpot as their sport of choice instead of the older British game. Daddy had become slightly ambivalent about having girls play, probably due to fear that someone would call his daughters lesbians and he'd never find decent matches for them on either side of the Pond, but Mum was as enthusiastic as ever. And...if she was playing on her House team and Geoff was on his, she might have an all-too-rare chance to beat the family golden boy. She doubted even Geoff and Anne between them could muster much sports enthusiasm from the geek-and-nerd House.

It couldn't hurt to try. She put down the required information as well as she could, hoping not to be laughed out of house and home as the little firstie who thought she could, and then returned to her letter as though she'd never gotten up in the first place.

Earl Valentine

Competition? by Earl Valentine

Earl was on his way out to meet Eavan. She needed a tour of the school. Of course this was his idea, Eavan seeing it as an older brother entirely too intent upon keeping an eye on his little sister. He passed the barely filled bulletin board and noticed the familiar piece of parchment with Jenny Zucchero's handwriting all over it.

Scanning the names that have already signed up. Some he knew, some he didn't. And one of those he didn't know wanted his position!

"No freaking way," he muttered to himself. He patted himself down for some sort of writing utensil, but to no avail. All he found was an old stick of gum and his wand. Earl thought for a moment. Over the summer, Earl had scanned through his new charms textbook one night while not being able to fall asleep. One of the new charms was something to do with signing your name. He wracked his brain for the incantation, the word finally coming to him from the recesses of his mind. He gathered as much energy as he could, pointed his wand at the next empty space on the sign-up sheet thinking of what he wanted to write.

"Insignia!"

Nothing happened. One more time.

"INSIGNIA!" This time his wand glowed slightly and shot out a black smudge of ink that formed itself to spell out
Earl Valentine, third year, keeper in his own handwriting.

Earl started in fascination. It worked. That was so cool! This was one spell that could definitely come in handy. \n\n

Signing up by Lily Collins

Over the summer, Lily had cooled down some. She'd finally stopped grumbling about last year's quidditch game. However, not before her little sister Autumn had taken to slamming her dolls and stuffed animals down on the ground screaming "Die Earl!" Lily had never been so proud of a relative in her life and she really did love her little half-sister. The child really seemed to look up to Lily. She'd even drawn her older sister a lovely picture of what Lily could only assume was supposed to be Earl's head on a platter, (as that was what Autumn said it was supposed to be.) Living with her father and step-mother was great, indeed.

Now however, Lily noticed the Quidditch sign-ups and quickly signed her name.

Lily Collins, 4th year, Chaser.

She scanned the list of other people who'd signed up. There were Jennifer and Chrissy of course. Two first years. (One of whom wanted Keeper. Hahaha.) Gwen, who Lily wasn't all that upset about seeing signed up since she'd proved she could play, even if it was by nearly killing someone....and Earl . That vile idiot! Lily shuddered and hoped Helena Layne was extremely overwhelmingly good at Keeper.

After all, if his actions last year were anything to go by, Earl didn't really want the position anyway. Of course, it was all up to Jennifer really who got on.\n\n

Geoffrey Spindler

Geoffrey stood with his quill, staring intensely at the sheet of parchment in front of him. He had a broom of his own this year, a chestnut Phantom Phlyer that his father had presented him with a week after the luncheon at his Grandmother's house. He had been at a loss for words, and hugging just wasn't really part of his relationship with his father. He had clutched the broom, as though afraid that it might be taken from him (and that wasn't an entirely unwarranted fear, but so long as his mother didn't know about the broom, and she didn't walk into the room it might be kept a secret) and smiled tightly. He didn't think he had ever loved a possession so much as he loved that broom.

And yet he still hesitated. It wasn't doubt of his abilities, he had proven them to everyone and himself as well last year. It wasn't even that he wasn't sure of any support - his grandmother had pushed him towards signing up again. Well, perhaps that was it in part. That and the fact that his mother was still utterly unimpressed. Diggory had renewed all of Geoffrey's magazine subscriptions, but Geoff has still found many confiscated before he could read then in any case, and there was no point in complaining.

He had spent his holidays mostly in his room, working on his pasty complexion and his models, avoiding his mother's acid tongue.

But his grandmother wanted a report. He had to meet people. He looked at the list, there were plenty of names there. They'd be a start, right? Except that he also needed people from other houses. Before he could somehoe convince himself that he shouldn't sign up this year after all, he stuck out his hand and scripted his name on the list.

But where to start with the rest? Maybe somewhere quiet, to get an easy start. Maybe the library. Aladren's weren't too bad. Geoffrey moved away, slowly, hunching up instinctively as he made his way out of the commons, looked around, and then headed to the library.\n\n
