Asher Tallow

Sunlight...and perhaps space: brilliant, long stretches of endless blue- suddenly, and potently, Asher desperately wished to be back with her family. She glanced at her watch, the thin band reflecting a time that meant, on any other day, dinner needed to be served, Mikes shooed inside, and her father's hand spritzed over with a quick, cleaning solution. It struck her as very wrong that her family should be sitting around the round, oak wood table sanded down by her mother, so many miles to the north, and Asher not there with them.

The very girlish urge to break down and cry slapped its unwanted fingers across her pale cheeks, and with a small gasp of breath, Asher grabbed her cello's carrying case with one hand and her wand with the other, and firmly marched into the Crotalus common room.

A soothing scene of domesticity greeted her, and the urge to break down eased with that small token vision. She smiled self consciously, stuffed her brandished wand back into her pant's back pocket, and tucked a bit of her too long black hair behind an ear. It looked as if she was the first to return from the Feast, and for the moment she was glad of it. From what she gathered, the Crotalus household was rather hen-pecked, and full up with Pureblood snobbery.

Asher rather hoped that was more talk than reality, otherwise she might be in a bit of pinch. The only other female she had known on any level past stranger was her mother, and it had been years since-

Well, since Asher could admit to having a real girl to girl sort of conversation. Still though, she decided as she pulled her cello case to her chest and grinned at the empty room, no matter how it turned out, this was a new adventure, and no adventure was without a few missteps along the way.

"Buck up, Tallow, you've dealt with worse."

Her bravery was short lived, however, as she released a decidedly girlish shriek of surprise when a hand landed on her shoulder, announcing another's presence.\n\n

Jenna Howard

Jenna was tired, much more so then she had been last year. She supposed it was because being a second year, the first night was far less exciting than it had been the year before. She remembered how she had spent her first night learning how to play Jenga. Those were good times.

Her thoughts were preoccupied with her younger sister. It was almost nearing an obsession, acting out in her mind every possible situation in which her younger sister could ruin Jenna's reputation. It's not like she was very popular or anything, it was just, that once you saw one Howard, people seemed to assume they were all the same. And that certainly was not true. But, when you were the quieter of two sisters, and the other could be particularly ostentatious, you tended to get whatever reputation the other sister did. Jenna had seen this happen before, she had lost friends in her younger years this way. And she definitely didn't want to go through that again.

She was so lost in thought that she hadn't realized her big black cat, Thornmallow, was under her feet. She stumbled, and the tailess cat got out of the way. Jenna raeched out and grabbed someone's shoulder for balance. The girl in front of her shrieked, and Jenna lost balance again, falling to the floor.

"Sorry about that," Jenna apologized, pulling mousy brown hair away from her face, "I lost my balance- my cat was under my feet. The name's Jenna Howard, by the way, second year." She got up, and held a hand out for the girl to shake. With any luck, this girl hadn't yet met her sister.\n\n

Ignore me if you want to, Asher. Me and Jenna posted at the same time, apparently. That makes two of my writing group with that problem-a RL friend of mine named Anne did the same thing at the Feast.\n\n

Asher Tallow

Reminding herself to breath took first priority, and so it was a few solid seconds of silence before Asher managed to gasp out a greeting of her own in turn. With her cheeks most likely bright red, she gripped the offerred hand and prayed her palm wasn't sweaty or anything equally embarrassing.

"Hullo...Jenna Howard. Asher Tallow, and obviously newbie first year."

Feeling a nuzzle on her ankle, she bent to greet the common room's third occupant. The cat purred encouragingly, and Asher smiled up the friendly girl.

"I love cats. I had to leave behind my Bear; he's too old for moving into a new place. 'Fraid the shock might be too much for him. I miss him, though...how old is he, er, her?"\n\n
